Re: Martin's mi-STRESS, 1965 Long Fleetside C10 "Rebuild in ENGLAND"

I do hope Martin has some photos of the party and the next day to post up.

I seem to have deleted them from my iPhone which was so over full of photos and other data sapping stuff.

A photo I forgot to upload from hearted days posting, one more item that caught my eye in the Harley Museum at Miami in Oklahoma.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psafy3a3zu.jpg

Next morning we were all up early. It was now Friday, which meant we had passed the halfway mark of the trip.

Kieths wife it seems is an early riser and had left by 06.00 for work. Remember what I said about people working hard in the U.S. ?? She could long since have retired, but continued to work in a job she obviously enjoys.

We all showered, had breakfast, coffee etc and then set off for Fayetteville, back to Arkansas to send a bit more time with Clem, Kim and their four cats.

I still had to collect the new side trim that I had bought months before, as well as the unpolished Stainless steel bed strips. These had been bought on Clem's shop account and delivered to him on my behalf, so I paid him back when we got there. Remember the Ski bag I had bought early in the year for £20.00 or $30.00 ......? This was to be my "sports equipment" on the return trip, and I had already paid the £65.00 or $100.00 for excess baggage up to 23kg or 50lbs Of course there was still the worry about whether they would let me take a 2.1meter or 7" long bag onboard that was ultimately to weigh in at 23kg. Subsequent to all the good planning, I still needed to buy another bag allocation for £140.00 or $215.00 to bring back the rest of the spares and stuff I had accumulated. Just beware if you travel like we did, stuff soon accumulates.

Once again we chose back roads and it delivered to us in spades......

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psrfruudei.jpg

There is so much more to see.

Scrap yards, cars, trucks etc parked out front, and out back of properties. Sometimes a glimpse made us pull over, turn around and go look again.

I had not taken very many photos on this day as the scenery was way too interesting.

At one point we saw what looked like a breakers yard.... Closed when we tried the doors, but as we had turned around to investigate and I was still looking for an original auto column shift steering column to buy, and any yard was open game we went to another business nearby.
Martin waited in the car while I went to ask about the yard.
Inside I met Meri (her parents' fault for naming her) and Paulawho worked the front office and desk.
At first they thought I was a mad Englishman, but soon warmed and started asking questions.
Within minutes, Martin had come to see why I took so long..... He is impatient like that.
Suddenly our quick stop and seeking directions and info about a breakers yard had turned into an hour or more in chat and cultural exchange.
I suspect the girls were massively amused by the way Martin and I play off each other, constantly hitting back and forth at each other.
British humour is different to the American version.
So there in Welston in Lincoln County in Oklahoma, a random stop for directions ended up in Facebook friend requests and well wishes plus a selfie for Paula's Facebook page.

Small world, generous people.

Terrible photo, but perfectly represents the randomness........

Paula to the front, Meri at the rear.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps6yurap3t.jpg

We made it back to Clem's in the afternoon...... Had a few beers down at the shop.

I also had a rather spectacular Mojito that Clem made up for me..... My first.

While packing my side trims and bed strips, Clem asked if there was anything I was still looking for for my truck.

We had mentioned to him that the trip had not delivered on a steering column to replace the one in my truck, but that we were both hampered by sheer volume of stuff. My ultimate weigh in was at 84kg or184lbs not including my back pack.

So he asked again if I would be interested in one if he had one, of course I would be and I said to him, only if I could pay for it.

So we went around to one of his stores, rummaged through the approximately eight he had in stock, all wrong....... He said he was sure that he had one. Until I saw it placed wheel on the floor, further back in the store. EUREKA !!!

We unpacked and dragged it out back to the front workshop and set about stripping it. I did not need the wheel, and my existing steering column had a shaft, so it really was just the rest of the column I needed.

The switch gear on it was brittle and falling apart as we disassembled it, and Clem suggested I order in an OEM part to rebuild it with. At 4.30 on a Fridaywe managed to get one ordered for delivery to Bret's mother in laws home in Austin Texas...... As we would be long gone from Fayetteville by the time it got delivered.
Cost, including overnight delivery was $99.95 which was a lot to pay, but at least one can now rebuild it and have working switchgear.

Clem also agreed to sell the column to me for an incredibly fair price.

I did help too, but here is Clem and Martin fitting a puller to the wheel.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnfcblepr.jpg

Eventually we decamped back up to the house.

Beer fridge around the corner, bottle caps this side please. I love the way in which Clem manages to make everyday items look just right and in place.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pskaytzabw.jpg

Back at the house I was greeted enthusiastically by all the cats, including Minnie who gave me all of her attention.

My kinda welcome.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pslyyksa7h.jpg

Back in "my bedroom" I found this car on the pillow, and a box full of vintage jewelry, clothing, handbags and hats for Nicola, a very thoughtful gift from Kim, who had clearly connected with Nicola through my stories and photos of her. Technology to the ready, I texted Nicola a few iPhone pics....... Response was as could be expected. Pleased.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdcgempi5.jpg

Coffee, tea, chats and cats took a while, then we were joined by Pete and his wife as well as Jeff from the shop and we all went out to dinner at a local pub and pizza house a few streets and short walk away for another celebration of Martin's 50th Birthday.

The jugs of beer kept coming, we kept on drinking. We met up with more of the locals who had been to Clem's party the previous weekend, and it was great seeing them all again. Even better was the fact that we were greeted like long lost family.

Eventually a load of pizzas came along as well and we all ate ourselves silly. It was an awesome night.

I managed to get the whole restaurant to sing "Happy Birthday" to Martin as well and it ended in a rapturous applause.

Did I mention this trip just kept on giving? :mm:

Eventually the seven of us left the restaurant and headed home for more Pool, Baccadri over ice, red skin peanuts and a generally good time till who knows what time of the night.

I think I ended up with two cars in my bed that night, again, not everyone's cuppa tea, but as I love animals and they seem to take to me, it was a perfect finish to the day.

SORRY GUYS, SEEMS PHOTOBUCKET IS HAVING A BRAIN FREEZE AS IT IS NOT POSTING THE PHOTOS ASSOCIATED WITH THE LINKS I HAVE POSTED UP.

SOMETIMES THEY DO RECOVER LATER.

Funny how stuff appears.

Bruce's tale on Retro Rides is a compelling read, written by a guy with a much more refined style and some serious camera kit, but also incredible will or want power. I have known him for years and done both business and social with him.

This thread of his is pure entertainment.

http://retrorides.proboards.com/thre...-potato-buyers

Here are a bunch of photos from Martin's phone and elsewhere that are now out of sync with the rest of the story, but possibly still worth showing.

When we were visiting Paul and Brandon in Ada they gave us each a year related plate.

I also managed to pick up a Sherriffs vanity plate at a garage sale.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pslhvmbyx6.jpg

Right....... Back to the random photos. It happens when you have 4 different cameras, three phones and a digital camera, you end up with too many sources.

Around 02.00 we were stilling the big shop when the donkeys, miniatures both, came in and demanded treats from Phil. They are like kids or pest, always getting under your feet.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pspzhvyqr9.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps76txmgag.jpg

This was around 03.00 in Norman, Oklahoma.

Austins original paint '57 four door Bel Air. An absolute gem, having been out on the town cruising with it and down the motorway, I can say it is rather special. As with everything in his life, it is for sale if someone wants it desperately enough and has the cash.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psuze5f3lm.jpg

Around 03.30 we had got to the Suburban....... Patina, rust free, and a serious tool, Phil then also started it up for us at that time of the night, demonstrated the 3" cutouts that Austin had had fitted for him as a Christmas present. This family really do live and play together. The care and tenderness between father and son was just awesome to see, and the pride Phil has in his sons success is palpable. It made my trip even better as I really value family relationships and closeness.

I love this brute a lot.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pswfbsdn05.jpg

Somewhere on a motorway....... I love/d *M*A*S*H* so this was a cool thing to see.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pst7aohl9c.jpg

Gas/Petrol price in Red, Diesel in Green

Cost per gallon.

No matter how you cut it, that is cheap....... Make mine a V8

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psuvgz8vuu.jpg

One of the things we did quite a lot on secondary roads was stop at small town pawn shops, you get to chat with awesome world wise people. We also often traded them bits from our baggage and for bits from their shops.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps2sbvhdqs.jpg

At this pawn shop we spent near an hour speaking with the owner, Russell, and at one point agreed to trade him some fresh English pennies for his collection and a 1977 Queens Jubilee coin for these Copper pieces.

I love the sentiment and artwork on them, not sure what it all means, but it was another random stop that had Martin and I feeling that we were other rip of a lifetime. I also tried to buy a Razorback branding iron from him, but he refused the money and told me to have it and add it to you collection of memories of the trip of a lifetime.
Life certainly is good.

These were untouched by human hands when he handed them to us.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdn3msjiv.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psziktv363.jpg

Anyone know the meaning etc, please do reply.

Another random item in his shop.

More in a minute.

Re: Martin's mi-STRESS, 1965 Long Fleetside C10 "Rebuild in ENGLAND"

Well, we have a winner !!!

Thanks to Euan "Moosevan" on Rods n Sods for the reply below.

Molon Labe

Englishified Greek for "Come and get it." Can also mean "Come and take them" - if you can...

Pronounced "Moh-lone Lah-Veh". Common context is in relation to firearms and firearm laws, as a declaration to be made to anyone that wishes to confiscate your gun(s).

Originates from King Leonidas of Sparta, in a message to King Xerxes of Persia, when an overwhelming Persian army demanded that 300 Spartan warriors drop their weapons. Leonidas replied "Molon Labe" (Come and get them) and 300 of his Spartans, and Leonidas himself, were killed, but in so doing killed took huge tolls on the enemy and stalled the Persian army for long enough to let the rest of Greece prepare themselves for the war.

If someone comes to take your guns, tell them "Molon Labe"

Re: Martin's mi-STRESS, 1965 Long Fleetside C10 "Rebuild in ENGLAND"

Back to the next bunch of random photos.

The pawn shops have so much stuff and in the regions where we travelled the Rebel flag, history and Being American is still celebrated with pride and no apologies.

One of the items in Russell's shop I would have loved to own, despite not playing chess, was this set.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssrbverkr.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqcxu5vxd.jpg

I saw some great looking sets of Spurs too in various shops, and would love to collect and own some of them too......

These in Russell's Pawn shop were modern repro cup holders.

Another open road.....

The photo does not do the car justice ...... Willis Hotrod

Different era.....

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psh1yqadlj.jpg

Pleased with another roadside purchase..... $1.00 bargain.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pstteg4dmk.jpg

General Lee ..... Thrown in free at one of my tut purchasing stops. It actually now belongs to Paul in Ada, but resides in Norman with Phil.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pswdvqelki.jpg

Cougar badge for a dollar....??

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psw61bz7wy.jpg

Another thing we rarely saw on the trip was broken down cars, trucks or bikes.

This one was just when we were leaving the Oklahoma City limits.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps4qcbu27z.jpg

More randomness, but high on the cool factor.

Burger and chips anyone? Neat packaging. Photo courtesy of Ta2Don.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psf9dj0lec.jpg

Back to Phils place in Norman, this photo definitely taken at 05.00 when we were in the man cave, sampling some of his moonshine collection. I loved it as Iused to distil my own as a teenager as my dad had a still he allowed us to use.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnqbdbj1t.jpg

Pricey in my view, item at Harley Museum on Route 66. However, a Coca Cola collector like Herb "BugThug"may know very differently.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps6n105o3x.jpg

Same venue, the first plumbed outhouse in Oklahoma, I think that's what the owner said.

I got all my parts home the only thing missing was a tube of mega grey gasket maker . I think it got lost in transit , there was a note from customs saying they had opened one of my cases to look inside . You could say we both did very well .

Re: Martin's mi-STRESS, 1965 Long Fleetside C10 "Rebuild in ENGLAND"

I am not sure if anyone is still reading this lot, or have moved on to other pastures.

However, here is the next instalment for those still interested

Seems we were having a seriously good night....... So the only photo I think of Martins 5th birthday party dinner was taken by Pete Hoffman who works with Clem. Kim supervising Martin in his party hat.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3vbscmch.jpg

Next morning we got up leisurely, which was a luxury. Martin had gone upstairs to sleep in the penthouse where Bomp had previously slept and came down in the morning looking decidedly smug at having had a night of deathly sleep, possibly his first in 10 days.

Clem and Kim made us breakfast again, her sausage receipe is just amazing. With all the right touches from the South and some Texas flavour thrown in, I found myself going for seconds every time she cooked, pure greed as it is so good. Clem is the pancake king, and he again uses a bit of magic in his pancakes so they are equally good.

I like to give credit where it is due, and here I will pause just to again reiterate that Clem Johnston is a man amongst men. (Keep in mind, I owe him nothing, so need not say this) he is generous, kind, thoughtful and clearly loved by Kim, which is telling in itself. I do not often meet people who exceed my expectations of them. We had known each other through the virtual reality of the Internet and shared a few phone calls before I got to Fayetteville, so when he exceeded my expectations and perception, it was a good thing. They did try to get us to stay even longer but we had so many places and people to deal with that we had to keep it limited to a couple of nights.

What is it the say about Fish and House guests? They all smell after three days.

After breakfast Clem invited Martin and I down to the shop to go see to the dogs and a few other tasks, which included loading some furniture on the flatbed and taking it out to a ranch in the Ozarks to Monica and Ricks who had lent them to him for the party.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfiuvyudc.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfthwtfez.jpg

They were not there, but Oscar the pig was there, along with his best friend Rosco.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psatbfndz7.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psevpq5qml.jpg

Clem and Martin not getting as close as I did.........

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3ee95tah.jpg

Incredibly talkative and social is he.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psgwgdddjz.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psq9z3vcts.jpg

Barn find...?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc4wyd8lw.jpg

Can you say Garage....?

We sooooo live in the wrong country. Part of Ricks garage get where stuff happens.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxlgtujxy.jpg

More in a moment if you are still there.

Grizz1963 11-15-2015 07:20 PM

Re: Martin's mi-STRESS, 1965 Long Fleetside C10 "Rebuild in ENGLAND"

Carrying on where we left off.

I forgot to mention, in Fayetteville the pub we all went to was the West Mountain Brewery Co.

Great atmosphere, staff, beer and awesome pizzas.

This is the car Rick and Monica built. Again, testament to graft. It has a load of trick details, and sounds just awesome when it approaches or leaves, generating a multitude of smiles.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pslhn6jbkg.jpg

Rick and Monica built this house themselves and again, I was mesmerised as I had designed my own first house and buillt it in the Cape Town suburb of Glencairn, near Simons Town about 25 years ago.

I would love to build and live in a house like this with broad verandas and design details around the edges.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pspd1qovtb.jpg

There is a continual theme of pigs wherever you looks.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psco5dxtkr.jpg

Flatbed in front of some of the outbuildings.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psd7pcs0yi.jpg

I seem to recall mentioning that the people we met on this trip have all worked bloody hard to get what they have. This is another prime example of hard work paying off.

More garden art.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psg5pua2bw.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdjrnvrqi.jpg

After dropping off the tables and chairs, Clem took us on a slow drive on the real back roads in the county, and my word....... He has some stuff stashed, marked and identified along the way.
One of my favourites was what I would think is a 50-60's Shasta caravan. Perfect condition, but could do with a refresh, he said it had been there for many years and is earmarked for himself.
Various other treasures along the way made the next three hours another highlight of our time spent with the Guru.
Then we returned home, only to be caught out by the whole of Arkansas having come to Fayetteville to watch the Razorbacks play.

Lastly, a brand new pair of safety glasses I bought along the way for $1.00 at a garage sale.

Perfect decoration somewhere in Clem's shop. I was pleased to be able to add something to his fascinating collection of weird and wonderful, stuff.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psaghprpxl.jpg

By mid afternoon Martin and I had packed the Chevy Captiva with our cases and spares, headed back to Searcy to spend another night with Don and Saless before heading town to Texas.

Cases in and the ski bag with bed strips and side mouldings, which at this point was still stressing me, what if the airline said it was oversized.....??

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnpfisqzc.jpg

We chose to avoid the motorways again and managed to stop at various places.

Including his great store where this extended cab was for sale, note the rear, opening door.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psz3pxuxhw.jpg

We spent quite a bit of time and I managed to buy a few items there too, including a silver hand made Crucifix for Nicola and a car dealers chrome sign for myself.

Martin managed to buy an awesome 80's Snap On tools wall clock with two girls in overalls for a trade of £5.00 in English currency.

The seller had this black bead skull that was beautifully cleaned and prepped from an animal that had been hit by a car. As well as a rattle snake spine.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psncrvcggf.jpg

The rest of our trip to Don's place was uneventful and we had a great dinner and time together, an early night by 11.00pm as we wanted to be out to town with him in the morning.

That's it for now......... Thanks for looking in.

Well I thought I'd put some more of my trip pictures I took .

The pawn shop we stopped at

This is some more of the truck outside that's up for sale

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psqrqfdoll.jpg

The rear bed was fibreglass

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psqp6gxiv9.jpg

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...pszsu3r4ne.jpg

Then after looking outside at the truck I went inside to do a deal on this

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psoetxeg8e.jpg

He had wanted $20 for it but after talking to him , I had noticed he had lots of coins and some notes . What he didn't have was one with the Queen of England on it . So a deal was done for an English £5 note about $7.50 so I was very happy .

I am sorry to start this report with some sad news......

Remember the donkeys at Phils place?

The smaller one of the two, Jenny, died on Sunday, after trying for hours, the vet lost her.

Such a sweet animal, she certainly captured,my heart instantly with her insistent attention seeking and love giving.

Now she is in donkey heaven.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pst5j7ihmd.jpg

Another random pic from a pawn shop, not sure if I posted it before.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc9bftoff.jpg

Right, so we had a good nights sleep, got up early and headed out by 08.00

The rental car again told us it needed attention.

We also knew the front tyres were at the wrong side of legal..... So Martin was freaking out every mile we drove, rightfully.

Then when we left Clem's the one brake light was out as well..

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pso7u1r3ab.jpg

So we got to Don's new part time job at O'Reilly's and he opened up while Martin and I went down to SONIC for breakfast Burritos

I was cynical, but man, they were silly good.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxfomjq7x.jpg

After breakfast, Martin bought some more parts for his truck, then we headed out for Little Rock.

Don prayed for us for a safe journey and I felt quite guilty leaving him behind.... This is a good friend, very good. Someone you can rely on at all times, he will always have your back.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psc1tbraue.jpg

Out on the road it was raining, traffic was not particularly heavy, being a Sunday, except for some slow traffic on roadworks sections.

Always love seeing cars being used, rather than stored up.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqnoiee7n.jpg

We decided to swing by Alamo car rental in Lttle Rock (Remember who came from there?) to see if we could exchange the Captiva for something with less issues. As we had changed the faulty brake light lamp (seen too many movies) and the tyres were not safe, especially considering we still had a significant distance to go. As well as the fact it kept demanding an oil change.

So we got to the airport via a slight detour and reported the car in. The staff were incredibly helpful and offered us a few cars in the same class, but ever the negotiator and by being gentle and nice about it, we managed to get a decent upgrade for free. It also meant that we would not have the ski bag poking through between the front seats getting on our nerves.

The new car was a Chevy Traverse.

The 2015 Chevrolet Traverse features a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 281 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque in LT trim level.

Stepping up to the 1LT trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights, heated outside mirrors, rear parking sensors, remote ignition, an eight-way power driver seat (with two-way power lumbar), a leather-wrapped steering wheel and wood-grain interior trim. The 2LT includes all of the above and adds auto-dimming driver-side and rearview mirrors, a power liftgate, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, second-row captain's chairs (the second-row bench seat is still optional) and rear-seat audio controls and headphone jacks. You also get the MyLink infotainment interface, which includes Bluetooth audio connectivity, Internet radio app integration and new Siri Eyes Free technology.

Old and new......

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjmrouyir.jpg

I had previously posted up this pic by mistake.

The new car just swallowed up all our baggage and darkened windows meant a modicum of visual security.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnpfisqzc.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psagttbye7.jpg

With extra oomph and space we set off, also gained a full tank of fuel and returned a half tank of fuel in the Captiva..... Score!!

So we headed back onto the i30 toward Sulphur Springs where we had spent the first night.

We were also going to stop over at John's place at Texarcana to pick up a spare LED light and drop off some T-Shirts etc for his daughter.

More in a while.

Re: Martin's mi-STRESS, 1965 Long Fleetside C10 "Rebuild in ENGLAND"

Another photo of how sorted we were.

We had already started packing stuff into the new car, red one to the left, when the lovely guy managing the floor offered us the Traverse as we had mentioned that the Ford and Jeep products in the same class were not really nice.

So all three together. Discarded Captiva out front.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps1dguzj7r.jpg

Some more barn finds we discovered along the trip. These were covered up in a huge industrial building. Like everything we saw, they are for sale too.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pslkilvxfe.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psp5atuekb.jpg

And this beauty.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps88fs8kro.jpg

So from Little Rock, we drove down to Texarcana to meet up with John at his home.

He was busy extending and remodelling his home. The man is very very capable and handy.

So when we got there it was the usual coffee, drinks, chat and of course looking at his Chevy truck that he is currently building.

The description is directly from an email he sent me.

The engine is a fresh 355 build.
The cab is a 1981 Frame 1987, front clip 1991, engine and transmission is out of a 1994. It has a 460 lift cam. Modified the intake so I could mount a 454 throttle body, had to install different injectors as the 454 injectors to match fuel. Has a few go fast parts but kept it so I can drive it on the street. It's a 1987 R10 short wide by the paperwork. Lowered the rear a total of 9 inches. Used all the factory parts have, 3.5 inch ground force springs on the front .

The color is Flame Orange.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psztlmlb8u.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psogrrplkv.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pslmaymi2q.jpg

In the end we spent over three hours with John and his family, with me throwing toys for one of the dogs...... My kinda visit.

Martin was fascinated with all his attention to detail and obsessive precision in all he does.

It was another day that had turned even better than expected, with the generosity of spirit we had experienced throughout the trip.

Eventually we dragged ourselves away from there and hit the road for Suplhur Springs, knowing that we needed to find some add Who stuff once back in the UK for Johns daughter.

We had a fast food Chinese meal for almost no money that was filling, tasty and again had some of the staff come over to our table to chat with us.

The off o book into our massive room with two double beds......

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psewuym285.jpg

Back where we started.

I loved these tables in the hotel.

The next day was Martin's 50th birthday.......... The main reason for the trip in a way.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pskdw9axqj.jpg

So that was Sunday then.

Re: Martin's mi-STRESS, 1965 Long Fleetside C10 "Rebuild in ENGLAND"

Monday 26th October.

Martin's 50th Birthday. The primary reason for this trip.

We both woke quite early, as usual.

I gave him his birthday card that I had designed and made up via FunkyPigeon.com (unfortunately no pic of that) also got him another T-Shirt with snarling Rottweilers as a reminder of his dog Bow in the UK.

Breakfast, then check out and pack up the car (with all the spares we had, we unpacked the car every night) after which we decided to go to a local Walmart down the road to pick up some provisions and for me to look for a nice hoody for Nicola. Nothing found, but we did see Gas Monkey garage T-Shirts for $7.50 and long sleeve sweatshirts for $10.00 Unfortunately not in my size. I did manage to buy Nicola a couple of Day of the Dead shirts though.

As always, Walmart was interesting, with sights you can never clear from your mind.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psgnksmfro.jpg

So this was foremost in my head as we left the car park........

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psv3yqg8jf.jpg

Heading down the i30 toward Dallas, we had a mission........

It was after all Martin's Birthday !!!!

Some of you will know the whole story, some of you part of it and some of you may now be surprised.

When Clem took us over to Mike and Sarah Losh's place on the Sunday after his Big Party the Saturday to give a hand and generally be amazed by Boosted Bertha a few things transpired.

Remember the Pink "I Love London" hoody we gave to Sarah? Well, it turned out she is a bit of a fan of all things British, including Downton Abbey. So the hoody was immediately seconded to Downton Abbey couch wear......... For her to watch her episodes in as she is so little that even the size Large was massive on her.
Martin's was clearly taken with this tiny little fireball who is the light of Mike's life and he quickly established just how much she loved Downton Abbey.
Sneaky guy that he is, he then slipped away for a bit and called a friend in England on the mobile and found out that he could get hold of a very limited edition book for Sarah.
This was all done on the spur of the moment, and at that time with no further expectation.
While talking to her we mentioned going to Gas Monkey Garage where "Fast and Loud" is filmed to see what we could maybe see and the possibility of buying a T-Shirt, followed by an over priced burger or sandwich at the GMG Restaurant for Martin's birthday the following week on Monday.
Mike and Sarah then asked if we would like for her to see if she could us in behind the scenes, as it is actually a closed film set now, with tall fences, barbed wire and large gates...... Hell yeahhhh !!!
Later she came back and said that she had spoken to her friend who happens to be the Public Relations guy for the Fast and Loud franchise.

Were we excited...?? Stupid question really.

So we had a week to wait after leaving Slosh Tubz and Boosted Bertha, which saw us do all the stuff reported so far.

So back to the Monday morning.

We left Walmart, drove down the motorway and eventually got to Gas Monkey Garage at about 10.30am.

Parked up in the car park, wandered in, browsed the merchandise after seeing all the tall fencing outside and clearly no way of getting in.

Martin found a nice shirt to buy. (He does like a nice T-Shirt) and I saw nothing that appealed to my simple tastes.

I then went up to the pretty girls (yes, they have to be in that job) at the counter, feeling like a prize sized knob, to ask if Jonathan was there, we were expected after all.

Errrrrmmmmm,..... I will go see if he is in said the girl, disappearing into the back offices behind the merchandise shop.

She came back about 5 uncomfortable minutes later to say "Sorry, Jonathan is not here, he went out earlier to drop off some chroming that needed doing at one of our suppliers"

I WAS GUTTED !!

I think Martin standing just behind me may have peed in his pants too, I wanted to. His face was a picture of extreme pain and dejection.

So in my best pretend it is not a big thing, voice, I asked her when he would be back, and if there would be a chance we could speak to him later??

She did not know.

Then disappeared again into the back office and came back, saying she had called him on his mobile phone and that he had forgotten about us altogether.

Keep in mind, this is a business, so making money comes first.

She said that he should be back around 1.30-ish and if we wanted to come back then he would speak to us.

At this point I felt like a total idiot for thinking we would even have a chance to meet these people, especially Aaron who Martin and I both were interested in meeting, given any chance as he is a real thinking mechanic.

Yes of course we will come back later I heard myself say.

So we went out to the car park, took a couple of pics.

Note the fences and gates.....

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8dtqaa6c.jpg

How many hundreds of people have stood in those positions, photographing themselves or groups? Pretty sad ehhh.
Still, we were there, and it was a bit like a pilgrimage of petrol heads, so needed to be done.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshf3xkmbx.jpg

While we were there Denny Hamlin's tow truck popped in as well, he currently drives the number 11 Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing in the Sprint Cup Series. So it looks like everyone wants a cut of the Gas Monkey Garage action.

This is a full size truck.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse0ky3l8z.jpg

Texas is full of these trucks, especially it seems Diesel trucks that have stupidly fast acceleration and an awesome sound.

We decided when back in the car to Google where ASM upholstery and Sue Martin was, to go take a look in there, or at least drive by, and also to look for the original Gas Monkey Garage where the Fired Up Garage crew now made their home.

When we got there, Sue was not there, so I chatted to one of the upholstery guys for a while, then Sue came in and greeted us, friendly, warmly and interested in why we had come all the way from England to check in on her shop.

She is really a lovely lady and incredibly hospitable.

She took us through the shop and showed us some of her work, seriously neat stuff, and some cool cars they were working on.

Interestingly.......... She collects car number plates, now who would have thought that?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psymfy27nb.jpg

I loved this sedan delivery they had done for a customer and asked her if I could get a pic of her next to it, to which she agreed, showing her best side.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8axzbdxj.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps7uv82sqv.jpg.

After this we went to Jack in a Box for lunch.

Again, fast food, but really tasty. And all the girls spoke Spanish and were friendly.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psce8ogaau.jpg

I opted for a large burger, fries and a gallon of bottomless Dr Pepper.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psultlr3nl.jpg

While eating we watched cars, trucks and other automotive craziness pass in the street.

We sooooo live in the wrong country.

After Jack in a Box we went to look for the original Gas Monkey Garage, where Fired Up Garage now gets filmed.

Martin will be along in a while to write this up.

Re: Martin's mi-STRESS, 1965 Long Fleetside C10 "Rebuild in ENGLAND"

Here are a couple I took at sue's , she really puts her self out to talk to fans of the show , and really down to earth .

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psoyacuvl4.jpg

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...ps8lqeyjaw.jpg

This was a job in the shop having the complete interior done

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psa5mz7hel.jpg

Well after dinner we took a drive around to the old Gas Monkey Garage . The gates up the side were all shut and no sign of the fired up guys , but Phillips garage at the front was all open . So I walked in and had a chat with the guy working in there . I asked it I could take some pictures he replied no problem.

This is some of the pictures I took inside

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psj1r08ey9.jpg

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psobsp2znb.jpg

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psgweeb9wn.jpg

I don't know if any of you watched fired up garage , but one of the episodes had a C10 cab fall of the trailer . Well at the time I thought it was all a set up , but looking at the amount of filler (bondo) in the roof and the paintwork was really good . They had gone to a lot of trouble making it look good just to drop it off a trailer .

The cab you make your own mind up

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...pstbmppbpu.jpg

http://i56.photobucket.com/albums/g1...psakpaseob.jpg

So then onto Gas Monkey Garage .

Grizz1963 11-20-2015 07:32 PM

Re: Martin's mi-STRESS, 1965 Long Fleetside C10 "Rebuild in ENGLAND"

Have I mentioned that gas/petrol is reasonably cheap in Texas?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfihixou3.jpg

I had previously mentioned that full size trucks rule here, I guess then they need full size recovery trucks too.

Not sure about the pink, but a neat truck for sure.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pso34bdsi9.jpg

While at lunch this truck had pulled into the car park too, of course I had to get a photo and then ended up chatting to the owner, he was headed out to SEMA the next week as well. Small world.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjq4qveat.jpg

Everything is bigger in Texas.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps1pwl4ywk.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxhbmmfxf.jpg

So there we were, back at the shop after lunch, not knowing what Jonathan looked like was not exactly useful, as we had no idea what or who to look out for that could be returning from a job out or lunch break.

At one point the gate was slid open a few feet wide and the unmistakable sound of a V-Twin came from inside the building, the next moment a large beard, wearing a full face helmet rode through the gates and disappeared out onto the street.

I think that may have been Aaron leaving the premises.

Things were not looking good at all.

Hanging around like eager teenage groupies at a One Direction concert venue had me feeling very uneasy, and to be honest, at that point I could have left with no regrets, but then conversely, I do not often give up on stuff. So we stood around, I went inside to tell pretty girl no1 that we were back hoping to see Jonathan.

In the mean time we started chatting with a group of three guys..... Turns out they are in the textile industry and had come to an expo to advertise their wares, from South Africa. Small world as I mentioned before.

Anyway, a while later, pretty girl no1 came out of the front shop with a bearded man, not Aaron Kaufman of Gas MonkeyGarage fame, but she pointed at me, so I went over and was introduced to Jonathan. At last......
Martin came over too, and we stood outside chatting for a while about the show, our trip etc.
a Mexican family with a young boy, who had also done the pilgrimage came up and asked if they could have a photo with Jonathan. It was clear that they somehow thought he was Aaron. I think he knew this too, but did oblige happily.
Then he asked us if we would like to go inside and see a bit more of the shop and meet some of the people from the show.

HELL YEAH !!!!

So we followed him in, at which point another guy who had travelled some distance to get both Aaron' and Richard Rawlings' autographs on his two arms, after which he was going to get them tattooed in position, tried to attach himself to our little group.
With practiced ease, Jonathan told him this was just a quick private entry and led us through to the inner offices, where RR has his office, the behind the scenes guys do all the online buying of future projects etc.

It turns out that Jonathan and Aaron have been best mates since school.

So of course I ask him if it is OK to take some photos while we are inside? As I have a thread to write up on our road trip when I get back to the UK.

Carry on he says.

Incredibly patient and an obvious choice for PR man to this show which has its fair share of Prima Donna characters who all demand their fair share of attention, Jonathan is hugely informative, clearly loves the programme and what it has become himself. He realises that the show constantly needs to stretch its own boundaries and evolve as your typical car show fan can get bored quickly and the attention span, thinking of myself here, is only that long.
So as long as they can create interest with plot twists and new directions, they should stay successful.

First thing I see when we get through the offices, is this bike Aaron built a long time ago.

I really could just sit and stare, it is so different.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pscykxojey.jpg

Then of course there is a moment for me to clown about, I do love any small motorised vehicles.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psy4odgrhu.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psxhbmmfxf.jpg

There are so many things to look at and I only took a few photos, as the discussion with Jonathan and some of the other guys including the film crew, is much more interesting to me. We meet some of them and get introduced to projects that have developed as they got deeper into this programmes DNA.

Another favourite of mine.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pspgyri1lf.jpg

And a car that is just mind blowing under the skin. I think it's programme aired the week before we were in the shop.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pse8qgco33.jpg

So how many of you are still with me...??

There are a few more photos of this day, but I guess it is time to get to sleep.... Maybe tomorrow.

Thank you for looking in.

No but my truck came to the UK via Holland . Les the previous owner went to Holland and saw it there , so in between the US and Holland I think someone was smoking something , as it had a yellow chassis as well . Les imported it to the UK himself

Sometimes I really really hate technology. I use the works iPad to post these updates, but every now and then, like today, just as I get to the last bit or photo, the iPad has a hick up or brain fart and loses all you just wrote up..... An hour or more gone sometimes. As everything takes time.

Grrrrrrrrrr...!!!!

Right, we're back on track.

I am meant to be doing a load of work work, but car stuff and procrastination is so much more fun.

One of the first things that catch your eye when you walk into the massive workshop behind the offices is this oldie, but goodie.

I remember watching RR hooning around in it at arace track in one of the episodes and just hoping he would not break it or roll it.......

While we were there, speaking to Jonathan outside in the yard where a load of other future and past projects live, RR and others were busy adjusting one of the lifts legs. No idea why, but he was getting his hands dirty too.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps38bzyaho.jpg

What was interesting, meeting some of the production and film crew was that many of them were petrol heads too, and how some like Johnny had been seduced by the cars and trucks being built on the show.

So Johnny was crew and this is the truck he is busy building.

Ford, with serious wheels, power and as low as a snails willy. I do hope it gets featured at some point. Johnny was hugely interested in the 24 volt LED lights Martin and I had acquired, as every rodder looks for that something to make his/her car stand out.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshkvyfayx.jpg

Sitting quietly, brooding in one side of the shop was this Ford GT40 that GMG had recently completed.

The crew at Gas Monkey Garage teamed up with AccuAir suspension to build the lowest Ford GT40 ever for this year’s SEMA!

This updated version of the classic GT40, rests its roofline at a ridiculous 38 inches high and packs over 800bhp!

JONATHAN IS THE GUY DRIVING IT. LUCKY LUCKY MAN.

He also started it up and demonstrated the Accuair ride for us once he had slithered into the black, inviting interior, I would have a problem getting in and out of it for sure. Just awesome again. The install is sooooo clean and looks factory. Everything just as a highest end buyer would want.

The car is a serious hair raising monster. The exhaust note and drone of that engine cutting through to your deepest core if you "get" cars. It is absolutely visceral and reaches out to your most primitive soul. My heart was screaming out in joy at that point. This day had already delivered so much for us. I truely felt blessed.

I cannot thank Jonathan enough for taking almost three hours out of his day to show us around and introduce us to many of the people there. I would like to believe that Martin and I contributed positively to his and the other people there's lives as well, otherwise the visit would have been a 15 minute economy tour to just "pay back" Sarah and Mike because they asked him to speak to us. This hobby is a whole lot more complex than many people realise and I guess we are all inter dependant.

Obviously, all of this is courtesy of a whole bunch of people, maybe firstly ourselves for making the effort to go out to "Mid-West" America, then the various internet Forums I frequent, the friends made over years, followed by then meeting many in person, guys like Don, Clem and Mike & Sarah Losh of Slosh Tubz for all helping us get closer to this incredible day.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdduz115s.jpg

We drifted in and out of the workshop, yard and various spaces over the next three, yes 3 hours.

It's amazing how time flies when you are having fun.

I think Jonathan also enjoyed our company and the fact that we were "Nickel and Dime" builders. Having to reuse, modify and often create bits to make our builds progress.
I think he was quite shocked that there is so little material, spares and the cost of importing every nut and bolt we need when they just drive down the road or overnight parts they want. So possibly a learning for him as well from us.

A Dodge Brothers panel van....... Future project, or easy flip? Who knows, at the end of the day, if you have the money, you can have the toy.

Just gorgeous, one of RR's favourites, purported to be worth a whole heap of money too. I would happily own it.

Hood ornament really says it all.

At this point Richard Rawlings came racing in on some massive fairinged Harley Davidson, music blaring and parked it, charged off into the offices and then out to the front of the yard for some photos, selfies and signing autographs and T-Shirts for fans. I just watched from a distance as mass hysteria is not my thing.
Jonathan mentioned that was how it went most days.

Martin had popped back into the workshop and grabbed a pic as he came in while I carried on chatting to Jonathan about E-Type Jaguars that they suddenly seemed to have cornered the market in, exporting them back to the UK and Europe.
There is a lot to be said for dry, warm salt free climates and winters like what the U.S. Offers, cars just survive so much better there.

Being out in the yard we were looking at many of the old projects from previous episodes and I pointed out a Ford that I had seen earlier in the day when we were outside the fences..... "Whose is that cool Ford?" I asked. Not realising it was actually his.

He proudly replied that it was his, one owner, very low mileage, and as you can see, great condition, statically dropped, with some plans for the future.

It was interesting speaking to him and some of the other guys, despite all having high powered modern cars as a convenience, they all loved their old cars, and pickup trucks ruled the roost by a very wide margin. This was after all Texas.

At this point A beard on a Buell Lightning came riding back into the yard.

Aaron was back from his lunch or possibly his other shop that he runs.

He disappeared into a side room for a while and then later came past on his way to the main offices while we carried on chatting to Johnny about his Ford truck and the Slosh Tubz he had fitted and what his ultimate plan was for the truck.

More later.
