Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I got out to the garage and welded a little seam. But then started to make a patch for the top of the cowl at the windshield that is rusted through on the drivers side. I started to make a patch with some sheet metal I bought a while ago and it's just too thick to make that many bends, damn it. I bought this 4x8 sheet of 18 gauge and I wish I hadn't, damn it. I wish one of you guys who need some thick stuff like this for a floor or something was closer so I could give some to you.
Anyway, I went and bought some thinner stuff to get this thing done. Brian |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Tipped cab on its back again and sprayed the bottom side with raptor liner, had cleaned and primed it some time ago. While on its back the drip rails were easy to get to so i cleaned all the old dry crusty sealer out and preped them for new sealer. After raptor liner dried its back upright on the roll around cart, next is prepping fire wall, filling holes ect. Still trying to decide whether to cover it smooth or not, decision time ya or na soon.

Connected brake lines from MC to rear. By the time you have this many bends invested in a line you don't want to screw it up by forgetting to put the fitting on the end before flaring!

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
worked on my a/c and heat control panel. I got two of the three knobs installed with decals and they look good. however one of the three switches is damaged and wont work. I sent an email to vintage air about replacing it. their customer service has been so good to this point I'm not worried about it. I know they will make it right. slow but steady progress did a little on the a/c wiring as well.

My "five minutes" out in the garage tonight got the piece for a rusted out area on the top of the cowl at the windshield on the truck pretty much done.

Well today was an "oh ****" day. Installed the 4-link pieces only to put the new Ford 9" in and found out the Panhard bar bracket was welded to the wrong side of the rear end, right in the way of the coil over shocks... time to have a couple drinks!!!:banghead::cuss::tim:

Got the rusty stuff cut out at the windshield and the new piece fit in, it's looking pretty good, a little fine tuning tomorrow and I'll sand blast the area and put some weld through primer getting it ready to weld that baby in.

I got out to the garage this morning before I head off to the Goodguys show for fear that I will be too tired to get in my 5 minutes today. LOL But I did it, got the patch tacked into place! WHOOO HOOO!
All it took was another 719 taps with the hammer, 275 grinds, 784 trial fits, and 24 times it fell through the hole onto the floor of the truck where I had to open the door and get it. Brian |

Got the last brake tube bent, but when I tried to fill my MC, brake fluid literally poured out of one junction. Turned out the T fitting I'd bought was actually for a pipe thread, not a double flare. Someone had put it in the wrong bin and I never bothered to look inside it to verify. What a mess all over garage floor, my frame, wheels, suspension, etc, plus now I'll have to re-bleed my MC. Bright side is that the lines came out pretty good. The parts store only had the last one in green finish, so I painted it flat silver to match the rest.

I got one little piece welded in on the truck, right at the top of the "A" Pillar (windshield.) The large round hole you see is right where the sun visor fits to show you where I am talking about.
My "Five minute a day" plan is getting something done! :metal: Brian |

BTW, why did you have to replace that piece - what was wrong with the original? |

Instead of lengthening the roof to make the posts line up, which in my opinion makes the windshield look to vertical, or raking the windshield posts which makes the windshield too slanted, I lengthened the roof half that much and raked the posts too, so that it has a "stock" look. Brian |

Tonight I sand blasted the area where the gutter goes and the gutter and applied some etch/weld through primer so I can weld the gutter in tomorrow night.
I got it done, ready to prime, then spotted something I missed. I had to weld up little holes and what not 357 times, then spot blast another 274 times when I thought I was done, so I finally finished up, primed it and came in and relaxed. :D Brian |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
vintage air sent me the replacement knob. I knew they would. their customer service has been insane.

Following the 5 minute plan? :)
Seriously, you do so much good work, it would be nice if you had a build thread going. Quote:

Thanks, I have a build thread over at Hotrodders.com but I don't post much on it. I need to get back to that.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
I went to install the gutter at the very least. I fought it for a while, ran out of the proper washer to screw it in, just didn't work, geez, I gave up. I took off for my evening walk and went to the hardware store to get the washers. On my way back home I thought I MUST get something accomplished tonight, so I walked home and out to the garage and finished screwing and fitting the gutter, it's ready for welding tomorrow.

I am like you - I try to get at least ONE thing accomplished per day on my truck, regardless how insignificant. I post progress reports only here on the WDYDWYTT thread, because my build is pretty mundane and not really worthy of a whole thread. |
Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
Finished blocking the driver's side rear fender and straightened the lower lip of the step for the same side. It was rolled under...

Installed trans pan, torque converter, and flex plate, then bolted engine and trans together. Would have installed them if not for having to re-drill and tap the rear trans mount bolt holes that a previous owner had stripped out. Should get engine installed tomorrow, then plan to test fire while all the front sheet metal is still off and everything is accessible.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
installed the replacement knob on the a/c controls. I also laid out the main wiring harness and traced every wire while following the schematic to make sure I knew where everything goes and how it fits. I did run into one issue. the main inline fuse needs to mount right next to the battery. they have it mounted for a stock truck with the battery in the floor. mines in the bed all the way at the rear so I will have to move that. shouldn't be to bad. other wise the wiring is pretty straight forward.

Re: What did you do with your truck today, Part 3
i practiced running beads with my tig welder. its been a few years since I welded with a tig and I'm rusty. its coming back though. a couple more practice session and I will be ready to weld something strong AND pretty. its the first time ever used my new 200amp tig set up. I think I'm going to like it. I have a knarly hole in my firewall that's going to need a patch panel pretty soon.
