I think the fenders on the bug look good. Back in my teens, I would pick up old VWs and order a set of header mufflers from JC whitney and with a roll of masking tape, door edge guard, and a cuttoff wheel on a grinder, I could turn one int a Baja Bug over one weekend. I like what you are doing to it.

It laughed at the sledge hammer so I busted out the ole Sawzall and gave it a haircut.

I think that the new fenders will look much better. I like the lines better and I ditched the one piece front end and am going back to a hood and fenders.

The olive drab paint is a test too. Is it too light? It will be olive drab with black fenders when I get paint on it.
Comparison of the old fender and the replacement.

can just picture that with some 31" or 32" mudders on it

Took a ride up to Wilkes-Barre PA for a load of truck parts. Lots of rain and fog but overall good day. Rain held off long enough to get loaded and out so that was a plus. Just shy of 500 mile round trip.

I have family in that area . It’s sad how the area has declined over the years .

I went to my Mother in Laws house and put up a security camera . About a month ago some one came up late at night and kicked her front door and broke the trim on it so I replaced that . We should be able to see who did it if it happens again.

Bought a new wood cutter upper today . I had a 15% off coupon from Home Depot . Website said 8 in stock after about 45 minutes of searching the kid comes out with a mangled up box . Said it’s all we got others must have walked . Ask when they will get more deer in headlights . He calls the manager and we look inside the box all the paperwork and a little bottle of two stroke oil but no scrench . He says 25% off and keep your coupon . So I got a $449 saw for $336.75

Thanks, I do too. The fender that I took off seems to have lived a hard life. I'm no body man but I don't think it'll buff out.

I didn't do any hands on work on the Bug today but I worked on it and my 63 plenty. I drove over 250 miles chasing parts. The best thing about CL is that you can get some smoking deals. The bad part is that you have to drive all day to pick them up. I left the house at 7:45 and got back about 3:00 with the truck loaded. I scored a nice 4 point rear roll bar to replace the stupid one that's on there now that looks like it just had a shot of Viagra. I got a complete new front brake system and a full Baja kit, I just needed the hood for my 63 but the guy said to take it all. I can sell the stuff that I don't need and get some money back. I only spent $350. New, the parts I need would have been over $1500 with shipping and I wouldn't have the extra parts to sell.

Got me some free tools!

Those tools are ready to return to service. I got to get me some of that stuff. That latch part from your VW came out nice too. I tried to find those latches made out of stainless for my Jeep. Because of how they operate I didn't want to paint them or powder coat them because they'll chip. And I don't have any interest in putting chrome on the Jeep. Eventually, I'll probably soak them like you did and then zinc plate them. That should keep them looking nice for a while.

Chrome has it's place but that's not every place. I like your idea on the Zinc. I just want things to look clean and not have some cheap Chinese chrome job on anything, but I don't want to black out everything either. I think that's overkill. I just want to find a happy medium between the two.

How about on a Baja Bus? I sold it to my girlfriend and she wrecked it. I found her another (cooler) Bus and was doing the transition when she met her HS sweetheart and gave me the boot. "But I haven't finished the Bus yet" :whine:

what about the rubber kind? Yes black, but for an obvious reason. No spring to wear out or break.

Good deal on that one. Back in the middle 90's, there was a saw/sharpening/ repair shop of sorts, a few miles from the house. The older fellow that owned and operated it was retired and did very well. But the shop wasn't organized very well and when he threw in the towell, there was an auction of the contents. On the same day there was an estate auction a few doors down which attracted most of the people. Chainsaws are boring, I guess. Anyway, the auctioneer had a gallery of 7 of us and myself and one other person did the bidding. I bought 16 saws of various states of repair, all complete and several different brands( no Stihls). When I got home, I went through them and found that 8 of them were repaired, and I managed to get 4 more of them in good shape.. I had 12 good midsize saws and no wood to cut. The next year a series of tornados and windstorms hit our area and I sold used saws out of the trunk of the car after work for 75 bucks a pop.
Good timing on my part. I still have a couple that are obsolete and my daily use saws are a Farm Boss Stihl and a MA 211 trim saw. They serve me well.

I have the black rubber ones on my other 2 Baja's. They are fine but like tires the rubber seems to not have a long shelf life especially here with the desert sun beating on them. Unlike tires they're cheap enough to replace every couple of years. I just used the metal one's because I had them.

The hood flew off the 63 (before I got it) It sat in a field for 40 years and the straps rotted and the wind tore it off and smashed it up pretty badly.

I like the Baja Bus that you had. I'd like to do one like that but split window buses or any old bus for that matter is just stupid money these days. The prices are crazy.

So the 63 now has a hood, new brakes, and new rear fenders (I don't like the one's on it) More projects.

pretty cool looking bus Tim!
been scoring pretty good lately myself.
got this canopy with all the windas, screens and keys, had to buy new struts for the door, for the grand price of NOTHING- free. canopy was in such good shape, i kinda felt guilty taking it for nothing, so i gave the guy a 6-pack of brews.
then i found a mint set of factory flares, guy wanted 200 for them. went out there and they were still on the suburban, so the guy says you pull them and you can have them for a hundred. took me and my son 'bout 40 mins to get all 4 off.
Attachment 2341003Attachment 2341004

sprayed some bed liner on the rear bumper so it matches the front, also sprayed bedliner on my new flares. if the weather stays decent this weekend, gonna paint the canopy black so it matches as well

Speaking of canopies I needed one for the 2016 GMC I just bought but only use it once or twice a year. Everything new was several thousand dollars. Nope found me an older aluminum one for $100 trimmed the back door down some, took some scrap .125 aluminum I had and made a quick kick out for the rounded tailgate. Riveted it on and called it a day. did not spend much time on it since it will get very rare use. All in I had about 3 hours time.

It is not too bad, about an inch narrow on each side. I have some foam rubber rail stripping on the way to help keep water out as well.

The thing I like the most is I can take it on and off by myself by hand. The one on my 2wd is fiberglass and have to be careful using the bobcat and forks

up north a lot of guys use this for 2 reasons, it's pretty durable and most important- cheap. i bought a small can for the bumpers and sacrificed an old detail gun to paint them. pretty tough, you can wack it with a wrench and don't do any damage. would i do a bed with it, no. pretty tough to get a liner better than Rhino or Line-x. i've had a Line-x in my crew for 15 yrs and when i can afford a bedliner for my new truck, it too will get a Line-x. i have a buddy who sprayed the floor of his jeep with this stuff, it does seem to be holding up very good so far
Attachment 2341082

for the flares i just used their spray cans. i find if i spray from about 12-15" away, it fogs down with a real nice almost factory like texture. total cost for one small can and 2 sprays was around 50 bucks with taxes
