I'm back.
These next two pics will show temp sending units. Took about 4 hrs to get this done. Both of the plugs in the heads, we could not get to move. So I decided to take out my gauge sender and install FiTech sender in that position, and install mine in the water pump. (I have a Steward pump with bung in the center.) This all sounds simple, but I had to take and move both the alternator and ac units to get this done, plus the bung in the water pump is 1" so had to go to town and get a reducer from 1" down to 3/4" to install sender. I felt it was more important for the ECU to have a better read on temp than my gauge. 1st pic is my old sender in water pump 2nd pic is FiTech in manifold |

If I had any complaint it would be their wiring diagram. Colors do not match wires (but wires are labeled) they tell you a 6 pin connector and it is really a 2 pin and 4 pin connector. The only 6 pin connector is the large one for the 02 sensor.
The two pin connector has one red wire to a constant 12V battery source. The orange wire goes to the + (plus) side of fuel pump. The four pin connector has Yellow wire for fan control ( did not use) Blue wire to - (minus) side of coil (for tach or rpm) White wire to a souce which will supply power in the on position and the crank position. Black wire to AC IN (to kick up rpms) Everything else is plug and play. Since I had a Ron Francis wiring panel it was very simple for me to hook the white wire to the fuel pump circuit (which wasn't being use) to take care of both on and crank. I also hooked the black wire to my AC/Heat circuit. Here's a pic |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
It's getting late, will finish up tomorrow...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
It seems to be a fair amount of work, Jim
The unit on top of the manifold looks really nice. Looking forward to see it finished!! |

During this install, Mark also installed a new stereo for me. The new one Pioneer to replace the old Panasonic. The new one has bluetooth and usb, so I can stop playing the single CD's, and get up to date.

Prior to starting the engine, Mark and I checked the system with the pump on and no leaks. Fired up the engine on Tuesday, started right up, a little ruff at first, but smoothed out. Mark and I were going thru the hand held controller, and then Mark said shut it off.
The return line was leaking gas at the fill tube to tank. After looking it over I removed the fill tube (Pic 1). It was around 6:00 p.m., so we decided to repair the next day. Pic was taken at 9:35 p.m. Pic 2 This is the new set-up. You can't see it, but inside the large tube, the small 3/8" tube has been bent so it shoots the gas down the tube. |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Very nice install.
FI unit looks real nice. Kim |

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
After install of fill tube, started it up, and no leaks. Still need to change a few things thru the hand held, but I'm happy for now. I hope today the roads are dry and I can see how well it performs...Jim

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
I put a Marine Stereo with Blue Tooth on my Harley and I love it! I have over 17 hours of music on a memory stick so I don't have to search for stations. I'll take you up on that ride as SOON as I can get a chance to visit your area again. I enjoyed our last visit maybe we can work it to have a longer on next time.

Here's the last 3 pics.
1st pic This connection is for the hand held controller. Used it like this for a few starts. It can be unhooked and your ready to go. I decided to drill a hole in the firewall and move it inside. Don't have to have it on all the time, but it will be nice to check system from time to time while driving. 2nd pic Black wire above the note is line coming inside. (note is to remind me where I hooked the wires to at the panel) 3rd pic Unit sitting on seat and ready for a drive. |

Mark and I played around with the system today. Truck runs great, starts so easy. Had a few hic ups, but nothing that the tech people couldn't answer. I even called Leevon for some help, he was very helpful. Still need to learn how to get to some of the adjustments that can be made on the hand held control, but happy right now. I need to do about 100 to 150 miles and let it learn, which may make it even better.
I want to give a big THANK YOU to my son Mark for all his work on getting the truck finished. When he was working with me, his paying customers rides, weren't beening worked on. Here's a couple shot of the shop with 3 jobs, gets a little tight. The black Firebird was finished up today, and went home. So his next customer is bringing his ride over tomorrow, keep that money coming in. As I learn more about this FiTech unit I will update you here...Jim |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Great write up. Glad it all worked out, it seemed to be an easy install. If you don't mind how much did the whole thing cost you?

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Nice work well documented Mark and Jim. Like everyone else, will be interested of performance perceptions when you have a chance to test drive.

I had it out all day today, went to a Super Cruise at one of local churches, about 50 cars showed up (no pics). Truck is running good, but still needs some fine tuning. Need to talk with Tech people to find out how to get to some of the items. No good instructions on how to go deeper in the hand held unit. Starts up great. I'm enjoying it but want it a little better. I may have to reset the learn system and try more adjustments that I had found thru videos on the net. I've only put about 60 miles on it so far. Will let you all know...Jim |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Jim, off idle to Wot how is the acceleration? Your truck ran pretty good IMOP so hopefully this is better. Glad you still have decent weather for cruises, getting cooler in Iowa time to get to work. Wife wants me to do some work on her bike before I can start on the 64. I traded my Model A for a 66 Caddy DeVille 2 dor Htop. Will take some pics as soon as I can. It has 33,000 documented miles on it. Real Cherry car. Keep us posted on the EFI install

So last night and this morning I was going thru different forums about FiTech, found alot of useful info. So I decided to relearn the system. I went and reset to stock set-up. I had to go to the hand held unit and select Default V8 T195 and send to ecu then it downloaded to 100%, which was back to stock set-up. After that I then installed my set-up for my engine, etc. Took the truck on a 108 mile trip, both city, highway, and a few off idle to WOT. No break up at 3500 rpm, just a steady pull to 6,000 rpm. A couple pulls from 0 to mid 70's and one 0 to 80 mph. See the attached pic. So I'm happy with this part. I still need to talk with their tech people about a couple changes I want to do, but need their input. I want the idle to drop off faster that it is, sometimes I can do a slow count to 10 before it goes back to 700 rpm. Also drop off faster when I release the gas pedal, when stopping at a light, etc. These are just small issues, but I want it right. |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Jim thanks for the update on the EFI. I hope to get mine started up with the FiTech in about a month. I'll be looking for the things you've had to figure out.

Sounds like a really nice unit. Looks like I'll be going this route in a couple years when I put a 4 barrel on my '87 Jimmy. Thanks

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Jim, glad you're up and running! I have a couple of small tweaks to make like you, just haven't had time to call tech and dig in. Let me know how it goes with those adjustments. Are you tracking your mileage? Leevon

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

Back for another update. Talk to Bryce at FiTech about three items.
Item number 1 was the vacuum tube going to the Fuel Pressure regulator. In one video I saw from FiTech it said leave as is open to ambient temp. When I talked to Bryce he said they are now shipping units with this hose attached to the regulator and then to unported vacuum (same as manifold) at back of unit. He said their engineers said this helped with some problems they were having. Thought I should let everyone know of this change. See attached pic....Jim |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Item number 2 was the problem with the unit tack and my gauge tack, not reading the same at certain times. The reason is the resistor in my Mallory coil to ignition. It drops the 12 volt to 8 volts and this will not work correct with their unit. Today both tacks read the same the whole day, even up to 70 mph. Bryce said he can't explain it, but it needs to be changed.
So now I have to buy a new ready to run distributor and coil, remove the old resistor in my line and hook everything back up. I will run as is for right now and order a new dist. in a few days...Jim |

Item number 3. How to get the idle speed to drop off quicker, both going into park and when lifting the foot of the gas pedal.
At main menu go down to line 3 "Go EFI tuning" and press enter. So sorry for the bad pics, camera would not focus right in dark conditions. |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

When the calibration screen comes up go down to line 3 "Crank and Warm-up"and press enter.

Re: My 50 roadster pickup build

When the new screen comes up go down to line 5 "Crank IAC", press edit, and another screen will come up (sorry no pic), but once that screen is up, it will show 100, press clear and then enter 75, then send to ECU, it should come back as "Suceeded". Now it is in the ECU, so shut off the key for 30 seconds to 1 minute and then your set. Anytime you send new info to the ECU it will be there, but not saved until the key is shut off, then it is saved.
Hope this may help someone, and sorry it took me so long to explain...Jim |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
