Now I have to think if I should make an underside onto the bed, so that it's closed (in metal or bedwood??) or if I leave it that way....
If you got ideas, please tell!!
I would close it completely, but in a way you can open it, just in kees (haha) you need access to it
Well Steve, in that kees ;), the upper box is just bolted on, it's removable.
Maybe I make the rest from the same wood as I make the bedfloor from, just have to think about it some more....

Today I sanded and primered the rest of the inner bedsides and also primered the spears. Inner bedsides going to be high gloss black, the spears high gloss red, just as the cab ofcourse

Looking good Kees...I would make most of it from metal, at least to meet up with the floor so it wouldn't stand out to much.
Just my opinion..

Thanks Mark, I probably close it the whole way down, metal seems the way to go...

Over to the TH400 kickdown switch. When I pulled the transpan, I checked if the magnetswitch for the kickdown worked. I can feel and hear it when I put some current on it, so I assume it works.
Now I must have a switch at the carbside to let it work as it supposed to be ;)
Remember when I asked about the magnetswitch which was at the front of the carb?
Well, I cut its bracket up :metal:
I made this into a new bracket for a new Old School Microswitch

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Tk...g=w702-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Ok...A=w702-h935-no

After a bit of tweaking and some professional adjustment ;), I bolted the switch at the carb.
When you push the throttle, it activates the switch at around 75 - 80% full throttle.
It can be further adjusted if needed because I made slotted holes where the switch is bolted on.

I don't know the normal adjustment of such a switch so I guessed it would be something like this.... Correct me when I'm wrong?

This is idle:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Xa...g=w702-h935-no

This is at full throttle:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eP...w=w702-h935-no

I also measured the starter, because it made an awfull metallic sound when you started the truck. Looked like the startergear was all the way down in the flexplate.
I made an aluminium plate of 1 mm (19 gauge) and bolted the starter with plate back to the engine. Now I have the startergear about 3/4 of the theeth in the flexplate. I think this should be okay.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-T...g=w702-h935-no

This is how it is on the starter:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/xl...=w1247-h935-no

Last but not least, I painted the inside of the bed high gloss black :metal:
And the spears high gloss red :uhmk:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3F...=w1247-h935-no

I think its gonna be nice when finished :sexy::sexy:

Until next time, sleep thight!!

Great build! Especially given where you are. One question though, why didn't you carry the Red all the way around the taillight surrounds?

Thank you!
The reason why I didn't paint the whole surround is this:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/iF...w=w702-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dr...w=w702-h935-no

The taillight bezel is mounted over the surround.
There's gonna be a white pinstripe between the red and the black, it isn't finished yet ;)

About 6 months ago, I ordered the new bezels you see here. I ordered aluminium, only checked then if they were in the order I got. I just found out they are stainless :metal:
So I got a little lucky :chevy:

getting done..... nice man! The black and red is 'timeless' for hotrods and bikes and white pinstriping it all will make it complete.... perfect!

I did a rendition of that on my last bike build but went with grey base and then red and white pinstripe instead.....

Thanks Mark, Doug and PTC!!

Ptc, what you said about colors, I was thinking the same, red/black is timeless Hot Rod ;)
I thought of grey with red spears too, or even mint green with black spears, all to get that fifties look.

I built and striped my bike also in that fifties look

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I did some small things last week, such as painting some ereas you don't see when mounted.
Perfect day to do some things:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Py...=w1247-h935-no

Sanded all the parts, primered them and painted it gloss black.
Also took care of the rear inner fenders, got all the Californian Dirt off, took a couple of hours, good stuff :metal:
Set the inside in rustconverter, primered and then put them in paintable undercoating, just as the cab. Now a coat of three gloss black and on they go!

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/gr...A=w702-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nE...w=w702-h935-no

I also got all the coolant hoses in, bolted the LPG system in (propane), got the fillerhoses in and got all the pressure hard lines in. Only have the LPG electrics left.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/cm...=w1247-h935-no

I already did the fuellines from tank to filler:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/c7...g=w702-h935-no

And as Ptc said, we have huge license plates, so I made a little less huge hole in the roll pan, for excess the towhitch and plug

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Of...Q=w702-h935-no

And, last but not least....I got the coolerlines for the trans made all the way to the cooler :metal:
The end is in sight.......:lol::lol:

Thank you Mark!

Today I painted the inner side of the rear fenders for the last time, now the outside....almost ready with those parts :metal:
Finished the hood latch panel also, that will get some pinstripes (when I get my inspiration :lol:)

I started working on the tailgate.
I got a set tailgate link assemblies from an '87 and up Pick up.
The man said it wouldn't work with such an old Fleetside...:lol:
This is the set I got.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nT...w=w702-h935-no

Here's what I've done so far:
First I put the tailgate at 90 degrees (open), ground the links apart from their latches and measured where the links had to come, a bit trail and error before drilling...
When the measurements were right, I first drilled the upper hole and put a bolt in it so it stayed in his place. Then I measured again to get the opening right.
Also had to ground a small piece out of the tailgate to get room for the links.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/to...g=w702-h935-no

As you can see, these are bent at the end, that doesn't work with my tailgate, so, I took the bent out, welded it togehter and measured again...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/L9...w=w702-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7E...w=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/K2...A=w697-h935-no

After measurements were taken, I came to the conclusion, the pin for the link also won't work, it's too large. I took a bolt and made my own ;)
It's stainless by the way :metal:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Ch...A=w697-h935-no

It may be not the nicest sollution, but it works for me ;)

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9o...g=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Oj...Q=w697-h935-no

One side in, testing......

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DB...=w1247-h935-no

Yep, easy does it!! :chevy:
Now think about some sort of lock....

The '59 comes with chains, and I don't like them, so they had to go ;)

I managed to get the other side also, so now both sides have links. Next is figure out some sort of latch, I have ideas.....

Also got the inner side of both frontfenders cleaned, sanded and in rustcoverter/primer. They can dry for two days, because I have two days off ;)
Overhere in the Netherlands we remember those who are fallen during war on May 4 and on May 5 we celebrate freedom.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Update:
Last week was sanding, primering and painting things you don't normally look at..

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/_B...p=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/H4...w=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/vF...h=w697-h935-no

These were all cleaned and sanded. I think the parts look really good! No rust, only the wheeltubs has some dents, I call them Natural Character ;)

After primer and paint:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Mo...E=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/lG...4=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/nw...1=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/xa...d=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Tp...K=w697-h935-no

Came out pretty nice. Innerfenders don't look shiny because there's a rubber underground under it, the 4 layer layers of black paint didn't make it so shiny...

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Yesterday I went on making locks (or latches...) in the tailgate.
Here's what I did:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Dr...C=w697-h935-no

These are the locks, piece of steel square iron and the the tailgate :lol:
Nice story so far :metal:

I want the locks lay flat in the tailgate, so I ground a piece out of it, the square iron fits in the hole.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Dr...C=w697-h935-no

Next I ground the iron so that the lock fit flat in it

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/WS...h=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/55...8=w697-h935-no

Then I welded the square iron in the tailgate, so that it is flat with the surface

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9m...w=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/op...G=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/iR...i=w697-h935-no

Under the square iron, I welded a flat bar of a 1/4" thick, made threads in there to screw the lock in, sorry no pic...

After welding all in it looks like this:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7v...w=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DP...-=w697-h935-no

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Gs...N=w697-h935-no

I'm happy with how it did came out, nice and simple.
Just have to drill the holes in the bedsides, but that shouldn't be any problem ;)
Was going to do this today, but body wanted different, so....until next time!!
