Now I'll see if I can post this on the right thread.

57 Chevy 5700 fuel truck with tank. Looks like it may have been driven in and parked in the line. When the oil companies went to bigger trucks for their local fuel delivery trucks some farmers around this area bought their old delivery trucks to use to fuel equipment on the larger farms.

People can be pretty bold when they are not face to face.

This is definitely the new mode for selling anything.

I normally respond to email offers, that I only accept face to face offers.
if you accept an email or text offer, that just lowers the new starting price for them when they show up and try to negotiate you even lower.

I have sold some off topic cars and had some very odd responses, and many of the new norm text responses.

Examples:
I only have 1/2 of your asking price would you take? << No, call me back when you get all the money. (This was for a motorcycle, next person who showed up paid my fair asking price).

I will buy it, I am on my way, do not sell << This is your first message, you do not know where I am, where are you driving to? First person with cash in my hand gets the car.

What is your lowest price? << My listed price is my lowest price. I have 15 interested parties and one on the way right now. (This was true, selling a very low mileage, older Japanese car that is in high demand. Sold it to the first person, for 1.5x of KBB value.)

Last lesson, there is a coffee shop 3 minutes from my house. Meet me there, text me when you arrive and I will meet you there. < I never meet at my house. If they do not show up I am not concerned about someone showing up to my house at all hours of the day or night.

I haven't packed on one of those deals yet but where I ask people to meet me is a safe place all around. More important people I don't know don't learn exactly where I live even though it is not a secret. If someone comes for a bigger item like a frame or a truck I have it out front ready to load and they don't get to "look around". If someone can see something from the road (400ft) and stops and asks about it that is one thing but if someone stops and asks about something that someone else saw in a shed without that person with them I am not going to be happy. Even then I'd rather have the person who knew about it to contact me and ask permission to bring someone out to see it and then I can get it out front.

For a long time I was upset at the laziness of today's younger buyer. I spent years learning to haggle, to feel out the seller or the buyer. Sometimes I make a new friend or at least a great acquaintance. I've gotten great deals on things I wasn't originally looking for, been given contact information for other folks with items I'm interested in, and even received job offers while discussing buying or selling something. I guess I feel rewarded because I learned to talk with folks.

Today's younger buyer is different and I have learned to work with them. This might be a CL ad for today's buyer as I see them.

"Buyer: Looking for easy profit. No strings attached. Quickly able to research value and price of item being sold. Will commit to anything if pressured. Doesn't care about seller's impression. Willing to move on."

I'd say that 14 was an honest bid on it. I thought it looked familiar, I think they ran it through Mussler brothers in Pasco when they had their "classic" car auction.

I see the price has come down from $800. I don't know why but, that has been for sale for over a year now.

I'd say that most guys who are serious 47 second series 48 truck guys also want the surround for that price.

Could be that he is one of those would be sellers who won't ship or prep it for shipping. Prepping in this case meaning putting a sheet of 3/8 plywood on each side of the crate to protect the grill from damage and prying eyes.

Then again just because it is NOS doesn't mean that it is perfect. I'm pretty sure that I saw that grill at a swap meet ten or fifteen years ago. It may be showing it's hauled around age now.

I looked long and hard at a NOS Chevy grill years ago, (I think at the Portland swap meet) and it was way out of my price range then (I didn't sell enough stuff to raise the money) but looking back have to believe that the seller thought the "original crate" was worth as much and maybe more than the grill it's self as he talked more about the crate than the grill.

There's a lot of potential in that one. (the car hauler). I could see Dan hauling projects back to Pasadena with it.

I had a standing offer to buy a Jeep Commando about like that with a couple for years but we lost track of each other and about the time they decided to sell it someone with more money than sense came along and offered way more than they thought it was worth. It was maybe the nicest all original one in this area that wasn't paraded around to shows though. I'd still like to have one but would probably put an Ls in it and change the whole running gear now.

A guy I kinda know has this crawler for sale, I saw it when he was in mid build on it.

LS power, Corporate axles front and rear and supurb building on it. 14K but it is 100% trailer it where you plan to off road with it. You can go to Utah and pull Matt out when he gets stuck with this one.

Dannny B 12-17-2021 10:39 AM

Re: Post your C/L finds for everyone to enjoy!

No more hauling in projects. I find some kind of interesting project,,, haul it in,,, rebuild it.
Then, I just look at it. I don't actually drive it around and, enjoy it.
I bought a F**d that looked to be a cool project. It just sat around so, I'm finally trying to sell it.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/23432940970...cAAOSwG~NhmW9J
I have to stop rescuing cool trucks. It would be different if I didn't live in the city.
I have a place near Myrtle Point, OR. but, I'm stuck in L.A.
You know how it goes,,, the money & the kids.

That Jeep pictured above is a rock Jeep. The tires are too stiff for the dunes. If you go in mud, the tires bury the passengers in mud.
I just don't go off-roading any more like I did years ago.
I still have my D***e 1 ton Power Wagon camper. I just can't seem to get away these days.

I had a Commando years ago that I took down to Baja.
We had the Jeep, a '62 Suburban, a 4 seat buggy on a trailer.
We went to find Scavenger's Beach (Malarrimo)
WE got down in the river canyon and, eventually abandoned the Burb & trailer.
We finally abandoned the Jeep and, went on in the Buggy and, an ATC.
We almost sunk the buggy in a sinkhole.
Malarrimo means,,, a bad place to go near. It is close to salsipuedes.
This means,,, get out of you can.

mr48chev 12-17-2021 03:03 PM

Re: Post your C/L finds for everyone to enjoy!

I have to agree Dan that that buggy is primarily a crawler. Most of the guys around that build rigs like that are far more interested in rock crawling than sand. There is a big sand contingent that goes to the dunes by Moses Lake or goes down to Bandon Oregon and run the dunes there, but they usually have the more traditional dune buggies or orv set up for dunes.

Hey NorCal 55-59 GMC owners, here is a drop-in 59 Pontiac 389...will use factory mounts! $1400 with transmission, claims pulled for restomod.

Paint it red and use your GMC valve covers and nobody will ever know its not a 316/347/336. Use your own trans and sell the one it comes with to recoup. Probably ahead time and $$.

58 GMC Suburban project $8500. Not mine. Pretty rare to find one in this shape these days.

https://portland.craigslist.org/yam/...445414361.html

1958 GMC Suburban Project 1956 front end. Front and middle seat.
1978 Tran-Am front subframe, 1995 Lt1 350,4L60,3.23 Disc brake rear end, 97K miles on the engine/trans/rear end - have a video on the engine running. Rear end is not installed yet. Has trailing arm suspension out of a 66 Chevy pickup. Body has some rust not too bad but it has some. Wiring harness for the engine has already been modified. All glass is good. Windshield has a pretty good sized chip. I’ve owned it for 25 yrs. I have too many projects - it’s time to let it go. I can finish it to someone’s desired point if they want. I have one car I’m currently working on for another customer. It’s just not on my priority list for myself. My number is +1503310936seven. Text is best.
55-57 Chevy/Chevrolet pickup Suburban Part trades considered. Love things that make noise large and small.

Re: Post your C/L finds for everyone to enjoy!

A lot on that one is going to depend on if the subframe swap was done right.

I think that burb has been listed for sale a time or two before Over the past couple of years but it could be one of those rigs that changes hands a lot and never gets finished.

It might be a good thing that I don't have the cash to buy it or I'd be headed the 204 Miles down there to get it. Finished, that would fit my needs for a road burning cruiser to run back and forth to Idaho with.

It's a hard 204 miles at this time of the year but right now I just don't have the disposable money, or I would be real serous about that Burb. That would make a nice rig to run back and forth to Wendle Idaho to where my son and daughter in law are moving because of their work.

I don't get excited over many rigs anymore but that burb is one that I really like the looks of.

Re: Post your C/L finds for everyone to enjoy!

Honest question Dan, are prices for old Trucks actually that crazy in California?

That is maybe a 3500/4000 dollar truck Iin this area. A documented Napco Conversion would be worth a bit more but for 12K here it had better run, drive and have new tires on it and be ready to go down the road and a conversion with ??? running gear doesn't add a lot of value.

vintovka 03-05-2022 11:44 AM

Re: Post your C/L finds for everyone to enjoy!

Right now the price any vehicle is way up. Many dealerships haven't had any new cars or trucks in months. Bad news if you find one you will pay thru nose. Trucks of all ages are in huge demand and restored ones are moving at record prices. The down side is $5-8+ gallon fuel which may just flat kill the economy. Add in inflation, high shipping costs and lack of parts and restoration may take a huge hit when folks realize what is happening and who is responsible.

mr48chev 03-05-2022 09:11 PM

Re: Post your C/L finds for everyone to enjoy!

My question is just that it always seems that the asking price for Vintage tin in Southern California is about twice to four times what it might be in other parts of the country outside of the rust belt.

If you study that 58 a bit it is a mix match of parts including 4x4 front axle and a 5 lug rear axle.

It's the over all high prices on old Chevy truck stuff down there that has me curious. 200 for a door that I might price at 75 here and get lowballed on that all day.

As far as new cars, the lots here are still pretty empty and the nonsense you see on the net about huge discounts on left over 2021 models is just that, nonsense. It's sticker price and no haggle here right now. The used car lots are full of late models though and probably a lot of them were bank repos.
