Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Well...let's say what did I do over the last week. So I had the idea of replacing the steering gear box on my 70 lwb. Mine was originally a manual steering truck. I replaced the set up with a tilt, power column and box from a 72 originally. After about 10 years, and realistically a few before that, she let me know she was done. I couldn't keep fluid in it to save my life. To be fair to the old girl, there is no telling how long she sat on the old truck before I acquired her for mine. Anyway, after searching all over town for a rebuilt unit, I came across the last one probably known to man. I'm thinking sweet, I'm good. As I'm getting everything ready to go back together, my rag joint tells me to go **** myself lol (if that's not allowed a do apologize). Since I don't swap these units out daily, and am still fairly young and inexperienced, I was unaware that there were different shaft sizes. I mean in all fairness, that's like male adolescence 101 right? Should have known. Anyways, no one has a rag joint in stock. This is after finding out that the far majority of parts house associates don't know what a rag joint is. For those shopping for one, ask for a "steering coupler". 3 days and about 5 ups men later, the part makes it to the local store and is picked up. For a small fella, that steering box is a heavy bastard. The whole backwards bolt trick was amazing, thank you forum guys! Got her back together and back on the road. The steering is tighter than before, but not bad. I believe I got most of the air out of the lines etc. so, after about a week, she back up and running. Now I can get back to work and park her in the middle of all the plastic trucks lol. Finally, love this forum and the wealth of knowledge from you all is tremendously useful and appreciated! Keep it going.

Fired up the truck for the 1st time since starting the project a little over a year ago. All gauges work. Fuel leak at the hard line from the pump to the carb while trying to fill the TH350. I couldn't get the stainless line to seat, so switching out for a steel one. Got a lot of the bed installed yesterday.

Thanks! It's 503 light green, although it's more aqua or turquoise than green IMO. Here's a shot of the interior that I was messing with this weekend too - the washer pump body was loose. The color was one of the major reasons I got it, along with the original farmer's name on the bedsides. I can't wait to get it finished in the next couple of weeks. I'm not sure I can call it a Farm Rat with Old Air A/C and carpeting. Maybe Farm Rod?
Oh, I also decided to try building my own stainless braided fuel hose using Summit -6AN components: (1) SUM-220667B - Fitting, Male -6AN to 5/18"-18 Inverted Flare (for connecting to the OE-style SBC mechanical fuel pump). (1) SUM-220186B - Fitting, Male -6AN to 3/8" hose barb (for connecting at the intake to the Edelbrock hardline w/filter to carb that also has a 3/8" hose barb). (1) SUM-230603 - Hose, Braided Stainless Steel, -6AN, 3 ft. (2) SUM-220690B - Fitting, Straight, -6AN Hose to -6AN Female. Oops...I thought you were responding about my truck color. The blue of OregonNed's truck is awesome. |

Taking rear section apart for cleanup and paint. Found at least part of why turn signals were not working right. This is the way I like my issues, very obvious. Looks like I’ll replace from firewall back to tail lights when I put it back together.

Re: What did you do to your truck today. The 3rd chapter
Came back from CostCo with groceries and discovered a bunch of pieces of plastic alongside my truck. I realized that it looked the strip that covers the screws that attach the top to the sides of the camper shell. Got out a ladder and looked on top, and sure enough, there was a bunch missing. How it managed to "explode" overnight out of the channel it sits in is beyond me. I'll check my security cameras, but this would be the most random kind of vandalism that could occur. I'm guessing that it started and then propagated. I walked by that side of the truck yesterday and would have seen it. Guess I'll be buying more of it. That shell is only 2-1/2 years old. I'll buy black this time, since black is more resistant to UV. Anyone know where to buy that stuff? Maybe I can call the installers for that info on Monday.

Glad I'm getting down to just the detail stuff after my build. Finally found the right air filter, 5.5 inches tall. Undercoated the wheel wells. Painted the front suspension. Painted the front calipers Chevy orange for a splash of color 😁.

I got my front clip on and took it it for drive. Still need hood hinges, my old ones were shot and the ones that came with the clip are stuck open. And then I need body work and paint. Of coarse I've needed that for 22 years.

Yep, it just got real, real fun. Half a day of drilling out spotwelds and pulling sheet metal by myself. MIG gas cylinder (75/25) picked up, and just so happened my cab/radiator mounts came in too. I also ordered up the Brother’s radiator support patch. A little pricey, but that thing is really well made and stout. Tomorrow I’ll finish the cuts on the underside of the cowl/dash area and possibly start tacking in my patch pieces.
