Re: 198Plus build
Some pics to look at. I took some inventory pics of what Ronnie brought over.
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03060.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03062.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03063.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03064.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03061.jpg Got the drivers rocker cut off. It would normally take longer than a 1/2 hour to remove one that had been replaced if it was welded good. Only 2 welds were holding it along the top of the inner rocker. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03072.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03068.jpg The entire bottom lip was barely welded. It popped off real easy with the air hammer with hardly amy tearout. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03070.jpg I've still got some clean up to do. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03074.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03073.jpg Hey Ronnie, did you loose a carpenters pencil LOL. This is a pic of what fell out of the rocker. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03071.jpg |
Re: 198Plus build
It's in good hands now.

Here's your right rocker in pieces, Ronnie. It took an hour to get this one off. It was on there pretty good. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03077.jpg Notice your home made dogleg in your A post. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03079.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03083.jpg Notice the hole in the inner structure on the B post. It's in the middle of the pic. The old welds have not been clean up yet. I didn't want to waste the time if I'm gonna be replacing it. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03086.jpg Inner rocker rot behind the B post. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03085.jpg Ronnie what is covering this joint up Ronnie, Mud?? Both sides are like that. I haven't dug into it yet. I was already cleaned up and taking last shots of the day. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03088.jpg I need to brace the cab before I cut any more metal out. Due to the fact I don't know what's been done and whats holding it all together. It also has to make the journey to the sand blaster. Ronnie, you did say you hung some doors previously and they fit, correct? |
Re: 198Plus build
Hey Ronnie, I might have missed something, but why didn't you let Allan finish working on it? Why did you bring it to this other guy? His work looked like a hack did it. I hope it wasn't you... :haha: Sorry if it was.

Looks nice Ronnie, my question still stands. Why have me do your truck when you now have a bodyshop?????????????? I'm confused. :uhmk::uhmk::lol:

Re: 198Plus build
Thanks Alan......Here's you answer, I know what kind of work you do. I'm not sure about the guys that are working for me. Again I know my truck is in great hands !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So why not hire Allan to work for you? And pay him lots of money. BTW :cong: and good luck with your new shop.
|
Re: 198Plus build
Hey Ronnie,
Where is the shop located? Looks like a really nice body shop. If you can afford to convince Alan to come work for you, You might have so much restoration work lined up you will have a back log of business. which sounds like a great deal. |

I hope you can stomach what we might find as I dig deeper. I found some surprises today. First off, the sand blaster guy came by today and gave me a price to blast the cab, inner aprons, H/L mount panel, core support, 2 doors and some of the small items. He priced it at $700. There is no markup on my part. I know you said you could have it done cheaper over where you are. The choice is yours. It should be ready this afternoon for the blaster. It will save you a lot of travel time if he does it, but I understand if you want someone else to do it. I spent 4.0 hrs today so far bracing the cab and cutting the RT "A" post and RT cab corner off. Here is what I found under the filler at the windshield joint. Someone tried to braze it. Looks like they were hiding some rust which is still poking thru. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03092.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03090.jpg Cab bracing http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03093.jpg The right cab corner with pin hole rust spots. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03094.jpg I cut the cab corner off and I am holding it up next to the cab in this pic if it looks confussing. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03102.jpg The inside of the right kick panel. It's such a PITA to cut off something and try to save it that someone else has welded. They welded up the curve at the pinch weld. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03095.jpg Here is what was lurking behind someone's cover up. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03100.jpg It's a shame that professionals did this kind of work. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03098.jpg The wife had something to do, so I had to take a break to watch the kids. I will get back after it this afternoon/evening and will get the LT "A" post and cab corner cut off. I'm also gonna take some detailed pics of my doors to see if you still want me to use them. |
Re: 198Plus build
Makes for a nice weekend.......

Re: 198Plus build
I figured you needed more good news. HAHA
Here's the drivers A post or what's left. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03104.jpg Here is another way to patch the dog leg. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03105.jpg Notice the whiskers http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03106.jpg Here's another way to patch pin holes in the cab corner. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03107.jpg The inner rocker isn't as bad as the right side, but still needs some work. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03108.jpg I was curious what was on the inside of the kick panel. The pic doesn't show how thick the filler is. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03110.jpg I looked over the 2 doors I have and checked the threads at the hinge points. There is more pics in your photobucket account for you to check out and see if these are something you want to work with. Both doors need inner and outer lower patches. http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03121.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03120.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03123.jpg http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03122.jpg I do have a inner patch for the right door. I picked it up a while back to repair one of these doors. I'll sell it for $30 http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...b/DSC03130.jpg Where do you want get your panels from? I've got a PM to 65Custom about the cab corners. I believe it was Classic parts. |
Re: 198Plus build
It's amazing how hard they work to patch things up, instead of doing it right the first time. It's actually easier to do it the right way.
|
Re: 198Plus build
Good ,your not done yet. I went away for the weekend and I was worrieed that you would be done with everything by the time I got back. I have a set of rockers I need to put on my 64. This winters project.:ito: Or the winter after that.:smoke:

I didn't have much time today. It figures I get some work at home then we get really busy at work. It's all good. Throw piano lessons in with a sick wife= no extra time today. I did go out at ponder some. I had originally thought of letting the sand blaster discover what else is in the A post patch work, but decided to remove the rest of the boogered up patch work so the blaster can get to everything. I will also cut off a portion of the inner rocker at the cab supports so the blaster can access the inside of the cab supports some. Before doing so I will add a little more (not much) bracing for insurance. I explained to Ronnie that the only way to eliminate all of the rust is to bust ALL of the panels apart clean and treat and weld them all back together. But with mig welding corrosion can form at the welds even when using weld thru primer. Or I guess a person could have it dipped. I will also be taking some measurments for comparison when I go back with the replacement panels. The main measurment I'm concerned about is the drip rail down to the bottom of the inner rocker. His inners are original, so it should be a good referrence point. That has given me the most trouble in the past. Maybe it will save some time. I will take some pics of the measurements the next time I work on it. For you body guys out there what would be an estimate of time to replace the inner rocker front to back with a portion of the floor. I'm having him order the full inner with about 2" of the floor (one piece), toe kick, dog leg, rear pillar section, outer rocker, and cab corner on one side? I gave him a number and he screamed like a girl :haha: J/K I never kept track of the time I had in mine. I based my number off of Shannon's cab. The estimated time is to get it ready to wipe. I'm not going to divuldge my quote just yet. I don't want it to be biased. I think I'm too low and will fill bad if I go over it. But, it is what it is. I also gave him a price to replace the inner/outer portions of the bottom of the doors. |

Re: 198Plus build
It's hard to estimate how much to charge, or how long it will take. Even after you finish the job. You don't want to over charge, but want to be fair also. I stand back an look what I did, and always think I didn't charge enough. But what ever you charge would be fair, because regular Body Shops, and Repair Shops wouldn't even touch the job.
Here's an example. I installed a 350 Chevy engine in a Vega. I had to fab some stuff to make the kit work. I even made a transmission cross mount and cut a notch in the oil pan. I only charged $650.00. That was way to cheap. It took me a week, so I guess that's OK. :uhmk: http://belair.smugmug.com/Cars/Kusto...60_rsgWc-M.jpg http://belair.smugmug.com/Cars/Kusto...07_Zhub9-M.jpg |

Re: 198Plus build
I think Ronnie is ready for my pictures now.:lol: Ronnie I don't get it, if you have your own shop why are you always giving your truck to other people? Guy here said he would put a LS 1 in my 64 for $800. I thought that was cheap. Maybe I should let Strodder do it.

Re: 198Plus build
Realistically, I would guess 20-25 hours per side. Our door rate is $44 per hour, so that's $880-1100.
That being said, everyone here would be crying their eyes out to actually have to do it. |
Re: 198Plus build
Wait a minute!!! You think I'll be cheaper. $800 is a good price. That is if he does a good job. :uhmk:

Re: 198Plus build
Well when I bought this.......
http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k1...es1/car003.jpg Top in speed was rated at 198 from the factory but after a few add owns and a dyno tune I thought 198plus would be a good user name. Since alot of people know me by 198plus. Quote:

Re: 198Plus build
I think the name works. My dad's shop was Witchcraft Body and Paint. The local school mascot was a Witch.

Re: 198Plus build
Nice car.......175 works. I really should be called 185 plus I backed out of it at 185, a lot of things start running through you mind at those speeds......Like a dog, deer, or even a possum.

Re: 198Plus build
I had a 99 for a while. I miss that car. I also toured the Corvette assy plant in Bowling Greene Kentucky and also the museum right across the street. It was well worth the trip. If some one tells you they didn't build any 1983 vettes you can prove them wrong. I can't remember how many were built, not many. They crushed all but one and it is on display at the museum.
http://www.corvettemuseum.com/virtua...es/83Vette.jpg I vote "Hack Shack-n-paint inc" :haha: :haha: J/K Ronnie. ;) Your logo looks good. :metal: |
Re: 198Plus build
Yes I knew that there was only one 83. In 2000 we went with our Corvette club to Bowling Green with 12 other Vettes. It was the 5 year anniversary. The police closed the Freeway north and south. It was open to only Corvettes. At the off ramp to the Assembly Plant there was nothing but Corvettes on every street, and in all the gas stations. It was an amazing site. We took Route 66 when ever we could. It was a great trip driving across the country with 12 Vettes. We got honks, and waves every where we went. I want to go back some day. When I hit the Lottery I'll pick up a new one at the Assembly Plant. http://wtriders.com/WTR/Smileys/default/pigsfly2.gif
