Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I thank you and will check it in my cab, that will help me.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Bit of prepping today. Hopefully squirt some more primer tomorrow.
https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...41-672x379.png Wow. I sure look old in this shot. In my head, I'm 24. My body is not holding 24 too well. |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Haha, I feel the same way
|
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
A bit of filler, and another coat this evening.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I bought a Turbine Products Supplied Air System to save my lungs as I spray a di-iso-cyanate:
https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...022/04/sas.png First skiff of colour (First pic is closest to in-person, it's more orange than the next two pics. And the supplied air system is freaking awesome!): https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...11-672x380.png https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...30-672x378.jpg https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...38-672x378.jpg |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I'm jambing the cab, then hanging the doors, then finishing the bodywork, then shooting the whole thing assembled.
This is NOT a "show truck;" it's a freaking "please don't rust out so fast but hella cool daily driver." |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
It's going to be great, I'm really excited.
|
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Color is bright & not what I was expecting.
What are the tube lengths for your fresh-air set-up? That's really a good idea if doing a big project like this @ a home shop. |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Oooooh yeah, a color other than black! I like your approach to keeping it from rusting faster
|
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
The colour is as close to "Grabber Orange" as I could get with this paint.
The kit comes with a 25' hose. You can buy a longer hose from them, but it's a garden hose fitting at the machine end, so you could easily lengthen it in a pinch if you had to. |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
The paint is a little more orange in this shot.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I would avoid placing plastic over paint. Not just dry paint either.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Despite the pics I post, you need to know: it's not yellow. It looks yellow in pics. It's not yellow.

Backside of grill and front bumper done. Also hood inserts and headlight bezels.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
It's this sort of thing that has me thinking "in five years from now, when this is covered in road grime and blow-by residue, how much am I going to care how not perfect this is?"
https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...20-672x378.jpg Sticky-side-sandpaper-on-a-roll is one of the seven wonders of the universe. |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
For me personally the thought of having perfect paint and body work would ruin owning an old truck because I would be afraid to even drive it let alone use it for truck things.
PS. the more you deny it being yellow the more yellow it looks.... |

With some help of the photography teachers, THIS is truer of the colour:

I struggle to find shades of gray. I am either on or off, black or white, yes or no, go or stop, all or nothing. I struggle to find that balance. On one hand, this is intended to be a driver, a truck that I will use. Rain or shine, sleet or snow, freaking DRIVE it. It's going to scratches, rock chips, door dings, and rust. On the other hand, if I'm going to take it 100% apart and fix everything, why WOULDN'T I go to the effort of perfecting everything? Well.... because I'll STILL be working on it fifteen years from now, and I want to finish it and start enjoying it. Depends, I guess, on how much I can convince myself that the little defects I see all over the place aren't going to be bothering me as much as I think they will. And, at NO TIME will I ever say I am a body man. I'm less afraid of it, but I still do not enjoy it. Give me ten motors any day. |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Inners will get a scuff tomorrow and probably another coat of primer

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
That's right with the balance, I always tell myself I'll fix it, my buddies, that would be a restoration, but it's not perfect enough for that. I want to drive and use it too. The color is great, I like it.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I think it looks great and not a color you see all the time. On an environmental note, the bee's will love it. I had a yellow panel and I noticed that. :)

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I love bright colours on cars and trucks.
Lets call the colour Oranellow. Or Yellange Or Just Skinnys...... Enjoy, it looks fantastic. P. :D |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I really like the paint. It does look more orange in the last pic. I know exactly what you mean about finding a balance between perfection and drivability. That's part of the reason my build has taken so long. For not enjoying body work, you do great work.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Thanks for posting your activity on this. I appreciate the thinking and the process. Nice work.

Getting things done!

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I am digging the color for this one. it is a shade of orange I could live with, I am not a fan of orange.
Nice work on the paint and body. The raptor liner on the insides of the fenders is a nice touch. |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
And some more Ford Engine Gray on the inner fenders:

Your continued forward motion is a thing of wonder Skinny!
Enjoyed the latest video by the way. P.:D |

Rad support:
https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...09-672x378.jpg Some dark gray accent: https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...57-672x378.jpg Also - remember pops? He had a medical issue and went to Emerg on Friday, which has now escalated to a smorgasbord of issues and he's in ICU. I'm not sure if my "suspect Asperger's" is reading the Dr. correctly, but it sounds like there is very little hope that he will be recovering. I'm kind of escaping from this with working on the truck. |

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
I just tested positive for covid, so now I can't see him at all for at least 5 days. Probably picked it up in the ward visiting him. Not impressed.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Since I'm off work for a bit....
The fender fill panels were seam-sealed and primed on the outside (for jambing with colour-possibly tomorrow) and bedlined on the inside. My hope is to limit the amount of crud that gets in there. I did drill a large hole in the bottom of the fender brace to help drain everything easier. https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...56-672x378.jpg https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...42-672x378.jpg |

Widening the brake pedal...

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Heater assembled. Not sure I thought out the heater house routing. No, the cowl will not stay black.
https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...18-672x378.jpg It's not yellow. |
Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache
Pops is out of ICU, and in a GI ward. They say he is stable and interacting. This is a FAR cry from Tuesday where the ICU Doc had taken Mrs.Skinny and me into a calm, furnished, ambient-lit room to discuss "end-of-life" options.
