You sir have a steady hand!!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Kees !!!! Dude you are knocking it OUT!!!! everything is looking great man.
Those latches are killer! I used the MAR-K stuff but wish I had done something like yours. TIP: (from MAR-K) When you drill your hole for the tip to go into the fender channel make it big enough for a rubber grommet to fit. This will keep the pin from RATTLING in the hole when your are driving down the road..... Cant wait to see it on WHEELS and on the ground! ;) |

I looked at the Mar-K stuff also and came to the conclusion I could make it myself :metal: I even got grommets :lol: Wheels are now 5 inch off the ground, give me a month..... |

What would you do?? https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/P0...=w1247-h935-no Most of the wiring is also in, just have to find a diagram to make the wiper switch work with the wiper motor via this relay... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/sI...l=w697-h935-no If this will work I have High Speed, Low Speed and Park/off. Park/off didn't work with a 3-way switch... |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
I found a diagram, I think this is what I can use...
We'll see tommorow ;) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/G4...=w1596-h718-no |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Kees
Out standing. Just a thought maybe some bright gold pin stripping or do the tailgate in bright gold instead of white. Gold would make it really pop as well as white. I'm jealous. Nut Case |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Quote:
I'm not a fan of gold, so I won't go with your option ;) Think of doing what I was planning, red and white, just as the rest of the striping. Yesterday was a "fun" day, reaching a milestone! My buddy Niels was over to help start the truck. After resetting the distributer a few times...we get it at finally at the right timing. Started really good and sounds awesome with the new exhaust. At first I found it a bit loud, but after setting the timing right, it sounds as it suppost to be :metal: So letting it run a few minutes, checking for leaks, we found some small leaks to take care of, nothing special. Then all of a sudden, hell broke loose :ack: I was standing at the left side, Niels at the right side of the engine. The upper waterhose came loose with such a force, never saw that coming. I stood in the line of fire, getting all the really hot water over my arm and belly... Niels got just a few drops fortunatly! Man that was HOT!! So to the tap and cool some off. Really carefully took out my shirt, the damage was little I thought, my forearm was more damaged. After cooling we wrenched a bit further, cleaned the truck a bit and mounted the hood. But after two hours or so, the pain wasn't funny anymore, so we quit for the day. After comming home, the damge to my arm was getting more and more visible, talking to my sister in law, who works in a hopital at plastic surgery unit, thus seen a lot of these wounds, told me not to work at the truck for some time, to get bacterias out the wounds. My arm is badly burned, second degree wounds, skin hangs loose, a lot of blisters on my arm and belly...there goes my Flame Tattoo  Well, today is a lot better then yesterday, luckily almost no pain!! I think the stainless steel hoseclamp on top was defective. Now I don't trust those SS clamps anymore, I bought all new ones this morning... After the explosion: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/BK...T=w697-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/1l...Z=w697-h935-no Niels and I put the hood on, so I can build further on the front: (sorry for the bad pic) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7A...=w1247-h935-no So, when I ready to rumble again, you see the updates here :metal: Niels filmed a bit of the start up, will see if I can upload that. Niels, THANKS for your help buddy!! (Niels is lurkin here too ;)) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Sorry about your burns. Hope you heal up quickly.
Hard to see if there is a lip on the pipe. If there is no lip on the pipe going into the rubber hose it may not be a bad clamp. Kim |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Wow Sorry to hear of your burns, hope you are doing ok. It's too bad when you where on such a high with getting it running then that happened. Take care. Congrats on the start btw.
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Damn Kees!!! sorry to hear that, hope you heel up quick.
I 2nd that, I did notice no lip on the upper tube going into the rubber connector that's your colporate!! |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Wow Kees, so sorry to hear about the burns. Here is to a quick healing! Saw you and your buddy getting it going on FB.
Our hobby is expensive, physically demanding and as we see here potentially dangerous. And I hope to never give it up. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Heal quick...Jim

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Jesus Kees, be really careful.. Burns get infected very easily and then you're in more trouble. Hope you get wel soon! I've never heard of a hoseclamp failing in that way
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Sorry to hear about the burn! Take care Kees!
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
So sorry to hear this Buddy! its suppose to be ALL JOY at this time..... -- take care of it and keep it covered and CLEAN!
the pipe needs a lip, cut a piece of the pipe (about an 1/8") off the end or if you have more of it - use that. slit it so it fits over the end of the pipe then weld it into place about an 1/2" back of the end of the pipe. The hose clamp has to be behind the lip to hold it from slipping out. Should have one on each end.... good luck my friend! ;) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Update again!!
I want to thank everybody who's wishing me well!! I'll survive ;) I've inspected the whole lot, there is little to none lip on the pipes, you're absolutely right in that. AND, the clamp was indeed a faulty one, so 2 points for not having a normal lip and 1 point for a faulty clamp. Sooner or later the waterhose had to come loose. This, my friends, was a painfull lesson learned!!! I hope some will learn from my mistake! Now I have all new clamps, I did not trust the "nice" stainless steel ones again... And I listened to my great friend PTC, I welded a new, big lip on the pipes, only I have not much room, so I did it this way: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/aR...s=w664-h891-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3r...r=w664-h891-no The rubber hose went over it with a little force, the new clamps are sitting good and have their room. I'm confident with it now. Also, my buddy Niels was with me Thursday evening, we put in the backglass. Little by little I get things of the list... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/e8...=w1188-h891-no In the hunt for small parts I need for the vent widows I drove by a friends business, he has a custom paint shop in out town, and this stood at his doorway: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/z_...=w1188-h891-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/0k...=w1188-h891-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/MF...=w1188-h891-no You don't normally see things like this in our neighbourhood....:metal: |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
That's a great looking truck no matter where it is.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Looks like a good fix on the pipe.
Nice looking truck Kim |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Been busy the last few days getting the last bits of electric parts in.
Only problem I have is with the wipermotor. I will start a new thread on that in the right Electric Pages elswhere on the board ;) The waterpipes are all in, motor runs again, I made a small film of the start up, but it was only one second long :lol: I have a longer version of the one Niels made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUHM...ature=youtu.be This was before hell broke loose :metal::devil: Today I put on the rightside fender, now it starting to look like a truck again :chevy: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/e-...=w1247-h935-no Also pulled the doors again to make a nice new hole for the BMW doorlock motors.. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/uK...g=w697-h935-no This is the rubber grommet I use, it's from a mid '90s Suzuki Alto, works perfect. The first idea what PTC suggested is not going to work with our plastic airlines from the Big Trucks, this because of the radius the door makes when opens. The lines are too hard and then it just bents too much. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Bo...I=w697-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dg...E=w697-h935-no Then I have one question for the '58-'59 guys: Where are all the rubber hoodbumpers go into? I have two at the cowl, and two at the front/side of the hood, each side one. I have no more holes to put them in....maybe drill some for the four I have left?? |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Some of them go on the fender. I think one or two of the holes where the fender bolts to the inner fender is supposed to be used for rubber bumpers instead of bolts.

Thanks 59Chev, but also no holes there either.
Came across this pic on FB, now I see where those other four belong ;) |

I'm happy with the way it turned out! Put some emblems on today, just for fun ;) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/QY...=w1247-h935-no Then I got into the steering rack, I have an oil leak out of the tower. Put in a new seal, but that didn't solve the leakage. So I pulled the tower off of the steering rack to take a closer look.... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/BJ...f=w697-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Wu...h=w697-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/M0...7=w697-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ou...g=w697-h935-no I found out that the tower was already off once in his life... Probably for the same reason, it is a common item with Jag racks. Maybe better search for a new part...expensive. I also ordered a new set of brake calipers, they came in today. The difference between buying refurbished or DIY refurbish was so close, I don't even thought about doing it myself ;) That was expensive too, but hey, we're talking brakes and steering, that's a little bit of importance  |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
I have been told that this is a common problem with the Jag power steering rack (no one told me that before I put one in )
Thanks for the photos, you are moving along nicely. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Quote:
No one told me either.... And no parts being available here, not even through the Jag dealers, so have to shop in the Land Of Jaguar, the UK, they have parts I can use  No on to find the right parts, I found out there are a few different racks used on these cars..... |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
I was scrolling down seeing your truck come together...oops, what's that? Gear coming apart...sigh. Hope you can find the parts quickly.
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Yes, that's why we do a start up before bolting everything together :lol:
Was trying to find a complete assembly of the steering pinion, but they are no longer available. Tracked one down in the states... As there are many different racks used, I mailed a Classic Jaguar dealer in the UK, and see if they will provide me with the correct partsnumbers. Better safe then sorry  Thanks for checking me out Doug!! |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Kees my friend.... it looks like the project is coming together nicely!!! ;)

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Today I got the doorlatches in and had the powerlocks working. I even have back-up switches mounted and working for if the remote stops working :metal: (I got no doorkeys) Hope to get the doors done completely tommorow, with all glass in it too ;) Lot of work, but hey, you've got to set goals right?? I still haven't got parts for the steeringrack, could be a week or more before that arrives. Problem is that there are different racks used on my donorcar, luckily the partsnumbers and serialplate was intact, so now the big gentleman at Jaguar is searching what should be in it. We'll wait :mm: Therefor I can't build the complete frontend....just to get at the steeringrack. I was hoping to get it drivable before the first week of Juli, then I got to drive my little cousin to her graduation. Would be nice ;) |

If you find any rebuild info I hope you can share. :) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I found out that Jaguar no longer has the parts available but you can find it on eBay, aftrmarket stuff. There are some companies the will refurburbish your rack and pinion. I got two of those companies, one in the UK and one in good ol' Holland. Jaguar recommended! And at the costs of almost a new one.... I mailed a Classic Jaguar dealer (official Jag) in the UK, they replayed very quick and gave me the addresses. But....I will try first myself, to do only the tower, the rest wasn't leaking. I just ordered this set, it must be the right one (I hope): http://www.ebay.nl/itm/331670899708?...%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It will be a week before the set is here, so time to do other things, still much to do :metal: |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Good luck with your steering rebuild hope you find the right parts. How are your burns healing up? Doing good I hope.
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Burns are healing very good, I hardly notice it. It is still wrapped up all the time to hold it "greasy" I've been worse....;) Thanks for asking!! Update time!!! Got the doors all in one piece, latches, locks, all is working, even the signallights when locking or unlocking  Therefor I had to solder a diode in the positive current line from the lockcomputer to the rear turnsignals. Otherwise I had brakelights up front :lol: You don't need them there, right ;) Some pics to proof: Doorglass and ventwindows in, ofcourse that didn't go without hurting some other parts. Did use some tape to protect the paint, but the truck thought otherwise. Good thing the scratches are at the inside ;) https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Ny...q=w697-h935-no Doorlatches with powerlock, test and tune: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/U8...jcjx0f=s935-no All finished: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Er...kSRSdQ=s935-no I will be making some new doorcards, I saved the old red ones that came with the truck, they can be used as a template. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Oh forgot something important...
I have asked this at the Electrical Side of the forum, but didn't get any feedback on it. So I was hoping some of you are genius electricians with wipermotors and switches. This is what I have done: Benchtesting according this diagram: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/fs...=w1247-h935-no I have two wipermotors, one from a VW Golf II(Rabbit) and one from a '77 VW T2b. If I turn the switch from 0 to slow, the motor turns, turn off switch, motor goes to Park. So that's good! If I switch from slow to fast, the motor turns slower than slow?? Turning from fast to slow, it tuns at his normal slow speed again, which is faster than the high speed. Turn from slow to off, the motor goes to Park. Both wipermotors do the same thing. I have had a wiperrelay between the switch and motor, acts the same. And no, I didn't switch the wires between H and L!! (only to test if I was wrong....) Where does it go wrong? Are both motors bad, I mean have the same issue?? It could be by accident... Or is the diagram bad?? I have tested the switch, that works okay. It switches this way: B>L = Slow speed B>H = High speed B>P = goes to Park All this with about 0,4 internal Ohm resistance, it's ok. I also got this diagram, I only have no 53e? Or is this the "same" as 31b? I would say, where the brown wire is, is connection 31?? They use an extra "normal" relay in the ground wire...Probably to get it into the Park position? https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/KH...=w1262-h641-no This last one I haven't tried yet, because of the 53e connection. Don't know which that is. So if you have any clues, please throw them at me!!! OR, if some one have a diagram that I could use??? I'll be delighted ;) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Things are looking good.
