I will probably get my drop blocks and new Ubolts today .. Question. How long do I need to get the new Ubolts? How long are stock? If I went with say 1.5" drop blocks.. which Ubolts should I get? I thought about getting 1" and 1.5" just so I'd have either.

I'm going to need to stay with stock arms for now. I'll talk to Nate about just getting some of the brackets for the shock / track bar.

Now that I have changed my Fruit of the Looms and hosed down the garage floor, I can try to find all the tools that scattered when that thing let loose.

Just for FYI, ECE has those mounting pads for $39 plus shipping.

Chad knows that I am ALWAYS thinking about the worse thing that could happen when working on these old trucks. When that thing popped, all I could see was the rear housing flying through the roof.

I'll be working on it tomorrow, I'll take a bunch and post them.

My tailgate is at my friend's shop being painted. (just where the old mystery silver stuff was) and some minor rust repair. Dad and I can do minor welding but we had to cut a piece about 10-12" long to repair the pinholes on the pass side of the gate. We thought it would turn out better if he sprayed the base / clear.

Trailing arms and some of the PB stuff will go to powder the first part of next week. Maybe next weekend we can bolt everything up and at least get the back in it's lowered position. Rear brakes and axles maybe tomorrow..

current state: As of about this time yesterday. Dad is working on it now, so it has changed I'm sure.

Here's a pic of the bed wood too. I'm just planning to put a gloss SPAR varnish on it. This is pre-milled of course, it has been cut down and to size now. It's ready for SPAR. (I may do that tomorrow actually .. )

Purists might want to look away .. :metal:

The holes were carefully marked and drilled on both sides. I cut one side yesterday and got the notch fitted in nicely. Every hole lined up great. I can honestly say this is the first time I have ever cut into the frame of any of my projects .. BUT, I'd do it again in a minute. The stepper will be notched for sure.

Dad and I thought we'd cut one side at a time. Get one bolted in and tight then cut the other side. .. but we ran out of time. Dad is going to finish up the other side one day next week.

Anyway, .. you've probably seen 100 of these, but here's how it turned out.

(Just a note, there are more jack stands underneath the cab of the truck. All the weight is not on the back stands, they're really just there for extra insurance.)

Yep, we'll have to re-work the tailpipes a bit higher to clear. Im really pleased with it. Measure, mark and measure 3 more times.. It was scary man. :D

We picked up one of the step bits and made things so much easier.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Chris the Porterbuilt stuff kicks some Kim Kardashian sized a55. It fits perfectly. The fabrication skills Nate has are really incredible. I feel 100% certain the frame is stronger with the notch than it was before I cut it.

I'm not surprised to hear you say that. I noticed how nice and beefy it looked compared to others that I've seen before. I'll be hitting you up for more specific info about that setup.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

No kidding Chris, you get all your stuff together I'm not opposed to coming to Houston to help out. Not inviting myself, .. just sayin.

Come to TN for the weekend, we'll drop it .. no problem :D

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Much appreciated! Man, I was nervous.

It would be really tough to do this with the bed on though? I dont see how some have done it without removing the bed. Also, anyone considering it.. a good sharp step bit is the way to go. Good clean holes. It was $31 drill bit, but worth every cent

We did mine with bed on but we had the truck on a lift so it was not too bad

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

Yeah, I can see where a lift would help a bunch too. Not something I would attempt in my driveway though. (Bed on) I bet that's a challenge.

Not all c-notches wrap around the top of the frame like a PB notch.
Most just slide in from the bottom.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

so now from a stock frame to a notched frame what kind of travel change are we talking this setup specifically because I wanna be low but dont want to raise my bed

CC69Rat 10-08-2012 06:48 AM

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

This is the first one I have ever installed, but as I found in general questions and research about 6.5 drop in the back is as low as you can go without modifications. Even at 6" the axle will bottom out on the frame on occasion.

I like a slightly taller tire than a 295/40.. just me. Plus I will be flipping the trailing arm brackets on this truck so I will be around 6.75" drop total. But, my tires will be 'tucked' like I want them.

The PB notch looks like it would allow about 2 or maybe 2.5" more room. Im not planning to go that low.. Im looking for handling, a nice pinion angle setup, increased shock travel / function while not bottoming out on every bump. Ride is still important. I want it to drive like a vette.

Compliments mean a lot coming from you guys! Thanks.

Im really excited about it. It has turned quite chilly in SE Tenn over the past few days so not much more has been done. We have decided just to paint the parts and save a little $. We just need to wait for some decent weather or take them to the booth. We'll get it. :D

Dylan you saw my truck on Saturday. I'm running almost a 7" drop out back with a notch and have yet to bottom out. of course that's with no weight in the bed but evn with a few hundred pounds I haven't bottomed out yet.

Chad the notch looks great!! I'm glad you went ahead and took the plunge, once your driving it low you'll thank yourself for doin it.

Re: Project Grande Slam: Coley's Hot Rod Shop

It was nerve racking to cut it. I had about 5% little voice saying, 'Are you sure?' But your right. Once the notch is in place and I saw how it fit and bolted in I felt much better about it. Im anxious to cut the other side now! :metal:

We just wanted to do one side at a time to make absolutely sure it fit perfectly.
