Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

I have heard of traveling on a budget, but this must be the cheapest run around Paris, France you will get.

With Nicola and her daughter out to France last week for her birthday, I wondered how to share the pics I know some of the guys on here like to see. But they are all in high resolution, so emailing 125 photos in batches of 5 was never going to work.
So I loaded them into a file on her laptop, placed my digital camera on a tin of Heinz soup, and had the works iPad play some French music next to it while filming the screen in the dark kitchen, after which I uploaded it to YouTube. Think a piece of string, a couple of paper clips and an old shoe technology.

Mostly photos taken in Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur churches, and grave yards, including Jim Henderson of the Doors and Oscar Wilde the author's graves. Some skulls and bones of 6 million dead people in the catacombs under Paris toward the end.

So here you go......... Paris on the cheap.

I hope you have a glass of wine at hand and some cheese.

Sorry about the not so professional quality.

Cool stuff Rian, thanks. France is nice, I went to EuroDisney in Paris in 1998 with the wife and Kids. I visited Jim MORRISON's grave. Oscar Wilde is also interned there. I had the pleasure of seeing the Doors preform back in the day, courtesy of my older brother Artie. We got our a&^%$ kicked by the 'ol man when we got home as I was 16 and very drunk! Artie was on leave from the US Marines fresh home from the "Nam. Sadly in May of 2013 the cofounder of the Doors Ray Manzarek joined him in Rock n Roll heaven.

Cool setup across the board...how does MOT and VAT apply to classics like that?

No worries mate.

I love seeing the USA from my armchair too.

So when you guys post up runs, or even a visit to breakers yards etc, I love to look at the scenery around the truck or car..

Hi Justin

MOT is a yearly road worthiness test for all vehicles older than three years and all manufactured since 1960.

For instance, if you have a llight in the dash of your 4 year old car either not functioning, or indicating an error, it is a fail, even if the error does not exist.

Everything has to work, rust in structures are automatic failures etc, you can go online and Google UK MOT rules and read more about it.

VAT is a flat rate 20% on all purchases in shops etc, if you are talking about VAT, it is also raised on importation costs and the taxes associated with it, like import duties etc.

However, if you are speaking of road tax the it is free for all vehicles with valid MOT and road use insurance that were manufactured before 1973.

So my truck is on free road tax, despite having a huge engine and belching CO2 while burning fossil fuels.

I hope this answers your questions.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Not much to show, hurt my back a week or so ago, and when I went out to the garage last night, I made it to the garage door and decided to come back indoors and be sensible.

This morning a combination of two cats and my back woke me early, so I had a cuppa tea and went to the garage for a bit, to tidy up stuff and just make a bit of dust, as the rest of today belonged to Nicola, it is the 7 year anniversary of our first date, and we had agreed to go out and do stuff in Rochester where we had our first date, it was meant to be a quick coffee, but had ended up in a four hour date followed by 5 hours the next day and culminating in her marrying me two years later.
It's not all been smooth sailing, but I would not trade this girl for most. How many women tell you to buy a truck, motorbikes, tools and toys?? ( sure, she gets her share back, but it's worth it every day)

So this resulted in a small bit of progress.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psvdsy9pbl.jpg

Clean metal around the screen, peak next and then some primer and white paint to get it ready for the insurance to replace the screen that got smashed last year. I would love to delay installation till all the paint is done, but they have jobs to do too.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssxve9guw.jpg

A few pics for our American readership from Rochester high street.

Not sure if you can see the crazy angle of this building.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjto7nkev.jpg

Looking down the high street toward Chatham.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psnt8gqzqd.jpg

Rochester Castle, it has three square abutments (towers to me) and one round one. If you want to know why, go ask Mr Google.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pstl4gbsqr.jpg

Eastgate House.

And looking at the plaque, it has been here for a while.

Tomorrow it is off to Essex for the NSRA Swapmeet, let's hope there are some bargains.

Last year Mate Martin picked up a door for £100.00 for his truck, as well as a new front screen rubber for £10.00 and a complete cab mount kit for £35.00

I do live in hope.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Thanks for posting up Don.

I Hope the following photodump does not crash any systems.

I know a few of you on here and Facebook asked for pics from today's NSRA swapmeet.

Mate Martin, Disasterbus and Jim and I met up early today to go seek bargains for our vehicles.

Spurred on by all the bargains he got last year, including a door for his truck at £100.00, new front screen rubber for a tenner and a full new cab mount rubber kit for £35.00 we all had our skates on.

And it was Martin who drew first blood with a lovely pair of old skool bullet shaped chrome lights, with interchangeable clear or red lenses.

Through the day we all found real bargains and items we wanted or needed.

Kerry, Disasterbus got a brand new full rear rollpan for his truck at £40.00, that he will probably bring over soon, to weld up and probably paint at my place. He also picked up a lovely old sideplate sized V8 hubcap for garage art.

My bargain of the day was a pair of 2.5" used stainless tailpiece tips that took me an hour or more to clean up with metal polish. Not perfect, as I really wanted a set of square/rectangular Range Rover type tips. But at £10.00 for the pair, I had to have them.

Here then are the pics, as they came off my mobile phone camera.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfwdiv5m7.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pswogdmrkg.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psy2i2cy9x.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps1dnqro8v.jpg

I have also wanted a pair of bumper over riders as long as I have had the truck, this vendor was prepared to let me have these for £25.00 although they are Pre-60 items, and if I could make them fit, I would then have to get them chromed, so the voice of reasoning suggested I wait till I find a pair of chromed ones, so I walked away.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psmcu3xuhd.jpg

Dead cool hearse, sounded rather nice and quietly menacing when it drove by later.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqizdctkv.jpg

I think I would like one of these.......

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqd9zadw5.jpg

At that price I ask myself, what did the seller pay for it and to land it here?

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pscxblldnn.jpg

TECHNOLOGY !! LOVE IT !!

Martin Googling some pics to show Disasterbus what his Stepside would look like with a rear rollpan fitted.

Of course that made the decision easy.

Again a great Swapmeet, meeting old mates and finding bits needed for builds.

Just needed to be warmer.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Today was NSRA Swapmeet day at Arena Essex.

As always it was breezy and cold. I had prepared for this with some thermals under my jeans, a t-shirt under a hoody top, and a ski jacket and beany hat.
Toasty.

I had no specific searches, other than looking for a full set of 6 stud 15 inch Chevy Rallye wheels, with or without beauty rings and caps.

I love the Chrome smoothies, but also want a set of Rallye wheels on the truck.

So we all set off and I bought various things through the day, in my case, everything except the masking paper at £12.00 for the roll, and 4 rolls of masking tape at £5.00 was bought at prices I was happy to pay and made me feel I picked up a "bargain"

It included three Karen name plates for 50p, which I got for Mrs Nightmares Racing. A fire exit sign for the shed at 50p and an 8mm ratchet head ring/flat spanner for £2.00. A cool T-shirt for £5.00 which features a Chevy C10 Fleetside, wire wheels at £1.00 each, UVEX safety glasses at £1.00 each and a huge spanner for £1.00.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqrrbimk2.jpg

I also thought my bargain of the day was a pair of used Ripspeed Stainless Steel 2.5" oval exhaust tips. Not perfect, as I would love a pair of Range Rover rectangular units, or off an Evoque but they are not that common.

As bought.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshsrkfgbv.jpg

One done, I hated the blue edge.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psqisdhgza.jpg

One hour, some metal polish, black fingers and a blister on my thumb later.......

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pskjz3hmyq.jpg

While out, I also saw one of these for £5.00 and if he had a pair, they would have been mine.

Just like them a whole lot, think they would look cool as tip covers.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjpwrdayf.jpg

So that was my trucking weekend completed.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

Last night Freecycle threw up a pretty cool treasure.

Brand new, never fitted, electric door opener. Comes with VHS video instruction manual.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psseykuvxv.jpg

Of course this is perfect as the garage has alarm, infrared video but manual door opening.

The electric door opener will be great for when I reverse down the drive to the garage after shows and using the truck.

So another weekend job waiting.

After buying the 2.5" exit tips, and deciding to go for a 2.5" mild steel system on the truck, with 3" cutout valves, I went onto EBay and found these stainless reducers, so will get them rigged onto the Y pieces and then build the system behind it.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psdmdwsnpr.jpg

Another confluence today was the purchase of a couple of cans of Rustoleum Galva Zinc, cold galvanising spray.

I am going to mask off the rears of both new chrome bumpers and paint them with this stuff, hopefully preventing rust in the long term.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psu4vsbg2v.jpg

I am also going to paint the new exhaust system pipes and boxes with the galvanising spray, to prevent some of the external surface rust.

After work tonight I popped into the garage for a bit and removed more of the paint on the cab.

Mostly the paint, primer and possibly spray filler comes of slowly but surely, I think the thickness of coats of paint has saved the truck over the years.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps9vdoxbqt.jpg

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshf4ufzb4.jpg

Tonight I need to see ifI can find a decently priced DeWalt 18V cordless drill online, as I need one.

Best I can get so far is using Nicola's dad on Wednesday to get a 10% Pensioner discount.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

The G is where this started......

Look for the G Spot.

Look for Gillingham, the look at the top of the capital G and that is approximately where we live........

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pscqicvws6.jpg

Over the weekend I looked out for a set of Chevy Rallye wheels in 6 stud, 15" flavour at the NSRA Swapmeet. NO LUCK.

I had been keeping an eye open the last year or so on Evilbay and various forums, in case a full set came up for sale.

So in a fit of desperation I posted a "Wanted" ad on Rods n Sods last night, amazingly I got a PM soon after from a member, offering a full set with chrome trim rings and centre caps, was I interested??

Two emails, loads of photos later I went to bed after a price was offered.

This morning I had spoken to 4 different people and emailed a couple in the USA to get an idea of price, called the seller and agreed to his full price.

By 11.30 I had spoken to my boss and signed a half day leave, then left from Romford the Blue Dot on the map, where I was working to go down to Clacton on Sea, the Red Dot to collect the wheels.

By the time I got there, I was greeted by Gary, a long term rodder and super nice guy, and this.....

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pswwimaeor.jpg

An hour chatting, cuppa tea and Gary helping me (well he did most of the loading) get them in the back of the car, and and I was on my way.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psaviqf22t.jpg

Back home, time to be pleased with my purchase and figure out how to explain to Nicola why I needed another set of wheels, and now need another new set of tyres when I can afford it. The narrow white walls from the chrome smoothies are doing onto the Rallyes and the chrome smoothies will be getting some 3" white walls.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psmn2hsces.jpg

One of them close up.

The tyres that are coming off are almost new, but only good for rolling projects around on or building an organic garden in, but will be going up for sale as soon as I get them off.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pscsshogrc.jpg

I guess the last thing to mention is that when Nicola came in, I sat her down and had a long discussion with her.... Well it went something like "I may have spent some money" and her reply was "Does it have wheels?" To which my reply was obviously "Who told you? Martin?" So she just reminded me that we needed to buy a lottery ticket on Friday evening.

I think so buddy, at £200.00 or $300.00 for the wheels, despitet he tires being dead, I am not sure where or when I would find a set with trims and caps in the UK.

I wonder what a set of trim rings and caps would cost in the USA, if I could find them??

Nothing like a set of ralleys!!

Yup, agreed.

Love my chrome smoothies, and love Torque Thrusts but they would need 5 stud conversion etc.

Good Job Rian. I find it funny he was willing to put his truck on blocks to get rid of those wheels. Guess he was really tired of them.

Hey Bret, thanks for the help and info as well.

The truck on blocks is more related to the fact I was 60 miles or 100 km closer to him than if I went home and went another day, so he was actually in town in the truck when I called him to agree to purchasing the wheels, so he drove home and took them off.

He actually found a correctly studded set of 1942 Ford Artillery wheels at the weekends NSRA Swapmeet that he is fitting.

He only bought the truck a month ago.

Trade you two of them for that little Mini in your garage. ;)

But thanks, I like them too, and yours are lovely.

Had a PM and reply to my thread on Garagejournal from Ric in Phoenix Arizona

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=52970

Saw you mentioned a desire for a set of rectangular exhaust tips for your C10. I have a set from a C4 Corvette that I used to have on my S10. They're yours for the freight. I will cut off the old pieces of pipe welded to them to save a few ounces. Caution: they will make your truck considerably louder as they have a megaphone effect. That's why I removed them from my truck as my aggressive driving style probably attracts enough attention by itself, LOL. . If you're interested, I will box them up and get a price on shipping. I think I still have your address somewhere. Just let me know.

Best regards,
Ric

PS: They will clean up pretty nicely with little work. I just drug them out of the box I had them in after removing them for some turndown chrome tips.

I think he has struck the mother lode here.

Now just need to see if I can find a pair in the UK, and hear back from him about what appears to be deep scratches on the trailing end of one, like someone went off a pavement or through a dip in the road etc.

I will be looking for a pair of these now that they have been identified, you just never know.

Like London busses, they all come at the same time. (Ask Paul Y )

i think the rallys are very cool, even with the blackwalls. can't have enough sets of wheels and tires especially if you're prone to mood swings and want to change things up a bit. the white walls will be great too, can't have enough...

those rectangular exhaust tips are really nice but i was wondering if you got the cast one with the bowtie?

sounds like your girl is very understanding and forgiving... and will help to wipe up those drool spots when you find parts you can't live without.

Hi Clem, just on a London train again.

My first thought was black walls on the Rallyes. But then in typical fashion, bloody Martin started spending my funds by adding more ideas into my already full list.
I want wide whites or the less common 2" whites on the smoothies so moving the narrow bands over and fitting new wides on the smoothies and also the teardrop trailer once I get adapters made for those 5 stud smoothies, it should look very slick.

Regarding the cast tip...... I have to admit that at $6.00 it was cheap but quite rough and pitted. But I should have bought it for the price of a couple of Big Macs. Would have lasted longer.

I think Nicola is very pragmatic....... How many pairs of black, red, blue, tan or quirky shoes does she need? The spare room wardrobes are filled with shoes..... I rest my case.

Just been searching for pics of this style Rallye wheels with whitewalls, Google only gave one, and incidentally with white rims, so even better.

I will be doing the truck in two tone with roof and side flash in off white, so still thinking whether I change the wheels to the same colour as the roof or leave them red once the new tyres go on.

Opinions please.

Also, if you have pics of these Rallye wheels with wide or narrow white walls, please post up as Google is not helping much.
