Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Good news, I removed the fuel pump/sending unit and found that the tank was really clean inside, but the section of fuel line between the pickup tube and the fuel pump was shot causing the external fuel pump to suck air. I removed the S10 pump I wasn't using and extended the pickup tube, and reinstalled it. Now I have fuel pumping.
Leaks are pretty much gone, so I took it for my first official drive !! I forgot to connect the vacuum line to the trans so it would not shift out of 1st, but I made it around the block with no other trouble!! Very excited to reach this milestone!! Pics to follow. |

hmmm, purdy. :)
I wish my tranny problems were just a vacuum line :) |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Congratulations on getting it on the street even if it was just around the block. It sure has been nice build to follow and read since the first post pictures of it in the field with no tires and a bed full of junk. Again, congratulations. Now to tie up all the loose ends. Thanks Atommik.

Stainless, from LMC Truck.
Still need to use the buffer and do the final polish, then I'll start installing the rest of the trim. |

Finished the exhaust this morning. After getting another look at it on the ground, I think I will shorten the length of the tail pipe. It sticks out too far.
Also got the vacuum line 95% done for the tranny. Just need to make the final connection at the vacuum port on the carb. Should be able to finish that before work on Monday. Well, with all of the "big" items complete, time to make a new list of "little" things to do! It's going to be a long list... |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
glad to see its finally all coming together an is a driver. One thing I'd suggest is having easy access to your battery. Nothing worse than trying to fix problems and to add to that the battery goes dead. For example I had a module go bad in my dist. I just ordered up a whole new distributor, from trying to start it before I realized the problem, then after I got new dist in I didn't have enough juice to get it going, so I had to swap out the battery just to finish up getting it going and retimed. Things like that will pop up, especially with a carb set up. Other than that I think your going to be fine.

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
99,
I am planning to have some hinged bed wood panels for access to the battery. I'll be building my own bed floor so it shouldn't be a problem incorporating the hinges into my design. |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
you can thank the ethanol mix in our gas for this

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Thanks Shannon.
Well after a 20 minute test drive during my lunch break with no surprises, I decided the time was right to drive it home!! Since my work is only 6-7 miles from home I knew it would be a shorter drive than at lunch time. So I went home and then had my daughter drive me back to work after supper, then I drove the truck home, no problems at all!! It's nice to finally have it home so I can work on it when ever I want. If I need to do something I can't do at home, I'll drive it to work. Should work out well!! Had a couple of neighbors stop by that hadn't seen my truck since it was is pieces in the garage. |
Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
That's awesome! I bet it felt good to swing it into the driveway!

awesome man, that is really cool your on the road. In a couple years you'll look back and be like wow where'd I find the time to build that and it will sink in that much more how much work goes into these and the joy of having them is def a blessing of some sort.

Re: 51 Chevy 1/2 ton, My S10 swap
Yeah, the fuel line was the original out of the S10 tank. It connects the fuel pick up tube and the pump. It's only about 2 inches long. Most likely used to help with vibration control.
