Re: pdx-sanity66
We're still out here partner. Been with you since there was a cold wintery Oregon background to your pics. I like the Arizona adobe background better.
Lot's of changes in the Forum, lot's of people dropping out but there is still a good following to your thread so please keep us in the loop... we're watching. |

So, yesterday was a big day for Sanity. the windshield and rear glass have been installed. Scott Hammond here in Tucson came over and put it in for me. He does fantastic work and his prices are fair. I had thought of doing it myself but considering I'm using the original glass(55 yrs old) in the truck and it is in beautiful shape so I couldn't risk screwing it up. So, that's it, now I've got the visors and rear view mirror to install and the wiper assembly. |

Now that the windshield is in, today I installed the visors and the original rear view mirror.

Nice progress

Re: pdx-sanity66
Looking good! That's sweet you were able to use the stock glass. I'm replacing mine on the 66 as it was scratched and hazed pretty bad. Had to do Crustine the 64 because of a rather large spider crack years ago.

I also have the wiper transmission arms ready to install. The cowl connection screws have been waiting for some attention for a while now. They were stripped, enlarged, and had 3 different size screws holding it down. I got everything aligned how it needed to be and surprisingly five of the existing holes were aligned with the cowl holes. The 2 on the outside were a bit off. I got all of the holes drilled and the nutserts installed. I think it worked well. I'm also ready to assemble the wing windows. I just need one more coat of paint on the frames. The last thing is a big setback for getting on the street, so I decided to get things rolling now. The differential needs serious help so I'm going to rebuild it with an Eaton tru-track limited slip and replace the ring and pinion and whatever else. I'm going to try getting things apart and order parts before we leave so I'll be ready for assembly when we return. Here are a few pics of work |
Re: pdx-sanity66
We are leaving for Oregon in 2 weeks, so I am starting to finalize a few things on a few of the smaller truck projects I've been working on. Yesterday I finished the window cranks. lubed the crank mechanism with lithium grease and put them back in their place with new rivets. I'm going to throw a little paint where needed and they are ready. I'm also trying to get the wing windows back together. I've decided that I'm going to replace the rear diff. with an Eaton limited slip, a new ring and pinion, and everything needed to do the job. I should have done this earlier but I was reluctant to. I've got new dutchman chrome molly axles, new outer bearings, and all new brakes all ready installed. It's not going to happen until we get back but I'm hoping to get all set up. It's going to be a busy couple of weeks and we're having 100+ temps to go with that.

Re: pdx-sanity66
Shoot where in Oregon are you planning on dropping in? I'm only just over an hour from the Brookings coast. Drop on by if you have time. :chevy:

Re: pdx-sanity66
Well, I had hoped to have Sanity on the road by now but my rear differential woes is the set back. Everything that I need to do yet will not keep from getting inspection and licensing.
We are leaving for our annual trip to Oregon to visit family and friends in a week so I am getting things ready for shutdown for about 6 weeks. No more work on Sanity until August. It's a disappointment to not get done but it' getting too damn hot to get much done right now. I'll be looking in to keep up with all that's going on. |
Re: pdx-sanity66
Don't put any pressure on yourself, just carry on when you get home.

Re: pdx-sanity66
Hey, I just thought I'd post a little update. We are still in Portland, Or. having a great time with family and friends. Next week we are going out to the Oregon coast. We'll spend about a week out there and then start the long trek back to Tucson. I'm ready to get back to work on Sanity.

Hey there. We've been home for about a week and we've finally got everything put away from the trip. We've been getting hit pretty good right now with the monsoon rains. I'm finally getting ready to get back to work on Sanity. The diff. is the first thing that has to be done before driving, so I ordered everything I need to convert to an Eaton limited slip with a new ring and pinion (keeping the 3:73 ratio) and all the parts to replace everything needed. I already have new Dutchman chrome/moly axles and new outer bearings. The parts will be here tomorrow. That's 2 days free shipping. I love Summit's customer service.
So that's what I'll be doing in between the heat and the monsoon rains. At least I bought a 30" fan to help. |

I started taking apart the rear diff. yesterday afternoon and my parts arrived for the rebuild. This thing is toast. It's a good thing I hadn't put any torque on it because it would have blown up. Today I hope to finish the disassembly, get everything cleaned up and I'll probably start the rebuild tomorrow. The afternoons are just too hot to work. A lot of metal ground up.

Re: pdx-sanity66
Good catch. Those rearends can do a lot of damage when they come unglued. Welcome home and stay cool. I don't ever remember a summer this hot. The temps are higher for you but the humidity is killing us. Without our fans, we would have melted.

Today I was able to get the rest of the rear taken apart. Axles are out, rear with the pinion gear out. It doesn't look like there is any damage to the housing so it will get a good cleaning and it's ready for assembly of all the new stuff. By the way, the new stuff arrived today. |
Re: pdx-sanity66
Glad to see you back at it. Been doing the monsoon dehydration weight loss program in the garage myself

Re: pdx-sanity66
Progress is looking good. I looked for details on what tank you used, but there are a lot of posts to go through! I learned it is a 16gal unit, but not sure what the OE application was for. Look like a mid 60's mustang tank. What tank is it exactly? Looks like it might be a good option for my '65.

Today I continue with the differential change. I have removed everything that I needed to. The inner pinion bearing race was the only real problem getting removed. 56 years is a long time. I thoroughly cleaned the insides of the case and inspected for any damage. Looked real good so assembly could continue. the pinion races were pressed in. I have set the pinion gear distance with shims and I am ready to install the pinion gear permanently. First today is getting the inner pinion bearing pressed on and then continue with assembly. |

So, yesterday I got the rear bearing installed on the pinion gear shaft. I heated the bearing in a toaster oven for about an hour on convection at 450 deg. I also decided to put the shaft in the freezer. I put the spacers on and the bearing slid on like hot butter. then installed the gear into place with the crush sleeve, outer bearing, rear seal, and the yoke. then the washer and nut. I tightened the assembly as tight as I could and now I'm ready to torque everything down but I forgot to pick up the tool I need to hold the assembly while I torque things down to spec. I need to get around 150 lbs torque or more to set the 20-25 in/lb of resistance on the rotation. I will have the part tomorrow so I'm taking the day off from the truck. I've also installed the ring gear and torqued it to spec and the side bearings have been pressed on, just waiting to finish the pinion.

Here is where I'm at as of this morning. Waiting on tool delivery today. We're in for some serious rain for the next couple of days so I'm hoping it doesn't slow me down. I'd really like to button up this project asap.

Re: pdx-sanity66
OK Sanity's Eaton Tru-trac project is done. I got the pinion torqued to spec, the Eaton installed and shimmed to spec, the axles installed, and the brake drums and wheels put on. I got Sanity off of the jack stands and got it started. So I backed it out of the shop and drove it around my yard a bit and it seems to be working great. Sanity will get a real test when I get the front end alignment done. I am so happy things worked out and I can put rear differential rebuild on my "things I've for the first time on this build" list.
But right now I'm on my way to Vegas for a week to party down and listen to some great music at the Big Blues Bender Festival which is for the most part all indoors. We're leaving in the morning. The drive is about 7 hours. I just hope we don't get in any monsoon rains on the way. |
Re: pdx-sanity66
The Tru-Trac is my favourite diff.

Re: pdx-sanity66
Hey all. I'm back from Vegas and ready to get back to Sanity. The rear diff is done, and I did a little run around the driveway and it seems to be working great. I'm basically ready to get the front-end alignment done and I can start driving the truck. A few small things to do before inspection and licensing but that won't take long.

Re: pdx-sanity66
Glad the coast trip was fun and ya beat the smoke. It's been badly smokey here now from the fires. You'll like that posi unit. I had a power lock unit in my dodge cummins and that sucker would lock no matter how much torque ya shoved on it.

Re: pdx-sanity66
Sweet! That's probably the cleanest rear axle I've seen

Re: pdx-sanity66
Well, I think I got too much blues music in my head. "If I didn't have bad luck, I would have no luck at all".
I got ready to move Sanity yesterday and I had a flat front driver side tire. These are brand new tires that have been on Sanity for just under 2 years and according to my new speedometer have only 2 miles on them. I took it to my tire guy, and it was found that it had a deformed bead. I admit these tires I bought were not a expensive tire but had good reviews. I got them from Amazon. I contacted customer service and explained the situation. They are sending a new tire free of charge and free shipping. It should be here in a couple of days. In the meantime, I am getting the shop cleaned up and ready for the next phase of the build. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that I just had cataract surgery on Monday on my right eye so that has slowed me down. I'm getting the left eye done in January. |
Re: pdx-sanity66
I'd say you actually dodged a tire coming apart at interstate speeds and destroying all your hard work over the years, so maybe a little good luck disguised as bad

I haven't posted for several weeks, and I've got some catching up to do. I have had a small voltage leak for a while now and I have just put up with it for now. Well, Sanity's battery died after several years of abuse so I decided it was time to buy a new battery and try and solve voltage leak. I discovered the leak was coming from the horn light on the button. I had disconnected a couple of other circuits while searching. There is no way that I can get under the dashboard at this time. So, I removed the driver's seat so I could clean up the wiring I had been messing with. I got the wiring cleaned up but I couldn't find the problem with the light so I left it disconnected for now. I will probably pull the switch out later to see what's going on. While I had the seat out, I cleaned up the floor area. The seat has not been working correctly since I put them in. What I found was the inside track was sitting at a slight bind because the holes I drilled for the inside track were in the indented gutters(?) on the floor so I made some spacers to raise the area even with the rest of the floor. I reinstalled the seat and it is working great. It slides forward and back smoothly. I also prepped and epoxied the tailgate and put it back on the truck. New chains should arrive today. I had removed the rear bumper while I was doing the rear diff. so I worked on it and gave it a good coat of epoxy and I'm working on final prep. I forgot to mention that I also got the vent windows finished and ready to install when I get the inside of the doors window frames prepped and painted. I've also got the center console in the works.
I want to give a shout out to Christian Carpenter for the idea on his exhaust pipe cup holders. I've stolen your idea. The biggest news is Sanity is now a legal resident of Arizona. I got the title changed and got the registration and plates. |

Yes, it's an old Craftsman toolbox. I'll be putting the original hardware that I've cleaned up plus a few modifications.
I also got my tailgate chains, so I put them on for now and installed the tailgate. |
Re: pdx-sanity66
I'm working on getting the rear bumper ready for another coat of epoxy. I've got a couple of small dents ts deal with first. I have also been working on repairing 3 cage nuts on the nuts that hold the door panel in place. I've got the one on the pass. door done and 1 of the 2 on the driver's side done. The last one is torn out a little more than the first 2, but still easily repaired. I wanted to get this done before working on the side window assembly.
I put a WTB on the appropriate parts page but I've had no response so I'll put it up here. I am looking for a very nice original driver's side vent window handle. It doesn't need to be NOS but needs to have no pitting. |
Re: pdx-sanity66
Sanity is looking good and glad nothing bad happened with the tire. Would have been alot worse headed down the road at 55 that's for sure! I also stole the cup holder idea for the 64 haha Works great.
|
Re: pdx-sanity66
Thanks for looking in TJ. Yup, blessing in disguise. I'm loving the cup holders. I'm thinking that I might make them removeable from the frame with some thumb screws or something. They would make a great wind proof cup holder when I sit outside.
I'm working on getting the rear bumper back on for now until paint. I test fit it with the new bolts and it looks great but I need to get some spacers in or possibly move the bracket out. Right now the bumper is about 1/16" from the back of the bed. I'll get some pictures up when I get it right. I also got the paint for the license plate bumper bracket and plate holder, so I'm hoping to get them and my headlight brackets for my big truck grill painted today. The front bumper has some surface rust that I need to remove and a little sanding and epoxy primer so time permitting, I will remove the bumper today. I'm going to try and get the front end aligned this week. I'm trying to get some things done right now because we're having some 70+ deg. days right now. |

Well, we've actually been having some winter down here in the land of sunshine so0 it has slowed me down a bit on any painting unless I hook up my heater. I've been working on my center console. I did get the rear bumper finished until paint, so I put it back on. I did end up moving the brackets out some more and everything aligns good. I also installed my modified license plate holder. I got the interior door frames painted before the cold spell so I'll be able to start assembly of the side glass. I'm trying to order new side glass in the green tint but so far every place I've checked it is on back order.
