Saw this 68 K2500 for sale on FB and noticed the weird SPID

Anyone ever see anything like this before? Factory correction or dealer reprint?

This is the 3rd burb Ive seen with this special order blue paint, anyone know of an agency or promotion that used that color?

Good question. My first thought was it was a long bed scratched out. Per the model on the left it says 09 which indicates it is a long bed. although I see no evidence of a frame cut. Which leads me to possibly believe the cab was put on a factory swb, when it was restored a while back.

Maybe it was cut but I’m not seeing it correctly? Any thoughts on how I can confirm this was a cut long bed or a different swb frame. Any input would be appreciated, I’m new to the c10. Thanks.

first thing, I would check the VIN on the frame for comparison to cab and title..

top of left frame rail forward of motor mount under alternator..

it's only the year, plant, and sequence number but should match or ???

Thanks for the info. I will check that out today when I’m home.

I think I know what I got. I believe the cab is a long box cab and the frame and bed are factory short, frame is not cut or anything. The cabs for long and short are the same correct? All of the options listed I have in the truck match the spid. coincidence Or what lol? I bet the builder scratched the wheelbase part out since the cab was put on the short box.

I’m speculating but it makes sense to me..

I bought the burb on post 856

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...62#post8692462

A board member asked what the color was and I think it says special paint.

It also says consignee caution, and permanent anti something. Don't think Ive ever seen either of those before.

Any enlightenment from the spid guru's?

Permanent anti freeze was common on government order vehicles which would explain the special paint also. Probably forestry or similar in that color. Good save!

bottom of left column 'GSA' is General Services Administration..

GSA handles most of the federal govt. non tactical fleet purchases that often have unique specs and placards..

could be placards for servicing, weight, tie down, lifting, speed, terrain, climate, NSN parts, etc.

the 72 Army truck above is a good example, specs vary per agency of course..

might find some paper safe cleaning products that would clean it up?

interesting for sure, be fun to learn its agency and history..

It’s just a shell. Had no front end, no doors at all except the third door. No seats either. And thats the best I could get the spid to look in PS. Previous owner has purchased a few bits and pieces that I get with it.

Re: SPID Picture thread?

sorry, I meant to clean the spid, looks like paper without lamination?

maybe a way to clean the paper to see what all options were there and figure out the agency..

either way, looks like a good deal on parts.. is that a posi axle right column, second down? :)

CG 03-10-2020 09:14 PM

Re: SPID Picture thread?

Sorry yeah I understood what you were saying. I should have started with the spid is ready to waste away to nothing and any kind of cleaning would just finish the job. I was just getting at there isn't anything else to go on where it may have come from. I did notice the interior seemed a little different shade of green than the exterior, so possibly a repaint? I was thinking maybe a little light sanding on the doors ... Ooops there are no doors lol.

I appreciate all our input and sleuthing abilities for sure.

I think the RPO code you're looking for is 3B?

like I mentioned before, the GSA vehicles often spec'd specific warnings and placards that would only appear on those vehicles and they don't appear in the 'regular' production code lists..

here is all I could find last time, might have to email one of the vendors that repop these to see if they have seen it before..

good luck!

Oh OK, now I understand what you meant. It just wasn't clicking (not uncommon haha).

I had a US Navy 57 sedan a million years ago and it had a brass placard with etched specifics on it like you mention. Must have been the consignee caution of its day.

I bought this today. 67 1/2 ton 4x4 panel truck.
I think the panels were low production (Rare).
Rare does not equal desirable.
The bottom panels are really rough.

Im not much good at decoding spids. I will say though that a lot of repair panels are now made for burbs and subs. Used to be you would have to make the truck pieces work. Rockers and a lot are interchangeable with the trucks though.

front axle posi can have ornery road manners and vulnerable if abused on dry pavement but unbeatable offroad traction when properly maintained and paired with rear posi :D

Thanks Killer B, good to know. I don’t know much about the older 4x4’s but I do know the front axels don’t like dry pavement.
So in 2WH the truck will handle like any 2WD posi truck?
My plans are to junk the body and use the chassis under one of my other 127” C-10 pick-up bodies.

Re: SPID Picture thread?

front hubs free and transfer case in 2H shouldn't bother anything up front..

the biggest issue I've heard of were on the later, lighter duty front axles..

now positrac was GM's name for limited slip on Dana axles..

might have a D44 up front (both my 71 k20 and 71 k1500 do) and might be a little heartier with it..

was thinking about adding one to my k20 at some point but haven't researched specifics yet..

but the bottom line is, they'll all serve you well to get out of the mud but won't care much for 4 wheel burnouts

looking forward to seeing more of what's under there.. divorced transfer case would be icing on the cake!

found one in a GSA suburban with pto winch but guy wanted too much for it..

I wonder if that is a Canadian government spec truck. My brother has a 67 GMC K1500 and it has front and rear posi ,4speed. The spid is similar to yours. His was a government truck built in Oshawa. Either way it's pretty cool. If it's at all savable, it would be neat restored.

The guy I got it off didn’t know. I thought a Forestry truck but the Gov Can makes sense. It’s an Oshawa truck. I’m thinking of pulling the GM Vintage Vehicles package on it to see where it was delivered. It originally came with utility buckets but at some point someone put a ford bench in.
Everything is saveable.... rare does not equal desirable. I think it would be too much to bring it back. I bought it for the running gear.

Looks to be a fairly typical government ordered mostly stripper short bed step side. Government ordered units well many times have a lot of goofy/unusual option call outs on the SP ID like yours. One thing your truck has that I have never seen before is the option call out for ‘ lift gate ‘. Any idea what that is about?
