Oh, one good thing.... Going to go pick up a rear end tomorrow! Bought a dry 3.42 rear from a 91 C1500 with good brakes for $200. So that will be this weekends project. THAT'S going to be awesome!! Not only will the speedo work correctly now, but I will be able to experience all of the 5.3's power, and the mpg should go up a little.

I was comparing tire size and gearing to the 03 I use to have. My 03 had 255/70-16 tires and 3.73's. It got 19-20 on the highway consistently, even with the blower. My gearing chart shows that combo turning 2250 rpm's at 77 mph.

With Fred's 275/60-15 tires and the 3.42's, it should turn 2250 rpm's at 78 mph. Almost identical!

Add to the fact that Fred weighs just over 1000# lighter than my 03, and I think the mid 20's are do-able. I'm already seeing 20-21. :metal:

Thanks a lot. I get 8 mpg and see 3850 rpm at 70 mph with my 5.13 gears and 32" tall tires.

If I only had 28" tall tires like you I would be at 4300 rpm at 70 mph. Can you say 5 mpg?

Yes, overdrive is in my near future.

Will do. I'm going to go get it tomorrow, then I'll check it out to see if it's going to need brakes or seals or??? I'll probably try to throw it in Saturday morning.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Sweet Dennis, that's awesome!!! I'm digging that color BTW!

OK, so I sorta rigged up some tailpipes last night. They actually turned out pretty decent. I tripped across the tailpipes off my old 03 a couple days ago in my steel pile. I replaced them with a 3" single system when I put the blower on it. I forgot I had them!

They are the same size, 2.25", and have the 4" x 20-something inch tips on them. I managed to get them to look fairly even coming straight out the back about frame width.

Fred sounds SOOOOO much better now!! :metal: I don't like it when the exhaust just dumps over the axle or before the axle. Don't like the sound, and it just seems incomplete. It actually sounds real good now, and I love the deep rumble that those big tips make. I was going to put Flows on soon, but this sounds and looks good enough to hold me over until next year at least.

I'm going to go pick up the rear end at lunch today! :metal:

OK, so I didn't get the rear end at lunch, but I'll be leaving work in about 20 minutes to go get it.

I sold some more parts today, so I have enough for a couple new tires now. :metal:

Did you get the cover off the new rear end to see what type of carrier it is?

I know it has 30-spline axles but it could have a gov-bomb or a clutch type posi carrier or even be an open carrier.

Been driving it every day since Saturday! I have over 500 miles on him so far, and just finished the second tank of fuel this morning about a mile away from work. The $25 Shell card I got from my debit card rewards points filled up the driver tank a couple days ago, so the third tank will be free to drive on. :metal:

Haven't touch it yet, it's still in the bed, but I'm pretty sure it's an open carrier.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

Well good grief, Charlie Brown!!! Not one parts store in this town seems to carry more than 2 wheel studs at a time! Not even the tire shops! :banghead:

So I'll guess I'll just go get all new lug nuts. At least I know Big-O has both sizes that I need.

I was at least able to get a diff cover gasket, gear oil, and a couple cans of brake cleaner. I'll pull the cover tonight and check the internals out. Then tomorrow after I get the spring pads and shock mounts welded on, I'll put the diff cover back on and fill with lube. The diff gasket seems to be the only thing that leaked, so I didn't get axle seals for now.

I did. Got it on Wednesday, sold it yesterday, and shipped it today!

My sig has always said 3.42! I figure I have it in my possession, so....... :D

I got the cover off tonight, lube was clean and didn't stink. Well, didn't stink beyond normal gear lube stink. Confirmed they are 3.42's, 12 and 41 teeth. Cleaned the cover and put it back on, then cut off the spring pads and shock mounts. Tomorrow I'll take it outside and pressure wash it, then start grinding. :D Should have it all done by early afternoon.

I couldn't find enough wheel studs in town today, so I just bought new lug nuts.

Old rear is out, new one has all the brackets cut off and ground smooth. Removed the two lower springs (thick one, and the next longest) and made new locating bolts by turning the heads of shorter 3/8" bolts down on the lathe. The new rear has the spring perches marked. Heading to lunch with the kids now, and will finish it up when we get back.

Pic tonight. :D

I took another measurement before we left. Axle flange to axle flange is 1" wider. I was measuring housing flange to housing flange.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred"

All done! I first took two leafs out, but that was too low. It was lower than the front. Only by 1/2" or so, but noticeable. So we put the thick bottom spring back in, and it sits perfect!!! :metal:

Getting in the shower now, athen we are going to go over to Pierce to eat. I'll put up some pics tonight or in the morning. Test drive report coming in a few hours!!
