Well, after lots of measuring, thinking and research I am 99% sure of going with the 68 Camaro fuel injection Tank from Tanks.

Next I wanted to make sure the rear fenders and running boards would fit again with this new chassis. Before I mounted the rear fender I still had 6 or 7 Reaper71 inspired flanged nuts to locate, drill for and install.

Another thing I learned on here was to turn the wire speed up on overhead welding from a comment one of the guys mentioned somewhere. I did and what a difference in the weld quality.

Anyway, the wheel centers nicely.... yeah, ugly shop rollers.

Install the running boards....I learned there was a difference on my brackets and the left front one was at an angle pointing forward that didn't want to match up with the running board. Hmmm...right front is the same so I swapped them side to side. That worked.

Anyway, mounting the running boards to see if the truck really needs the rear bracket. The 4 link arms mount to the outside of the frame right where the bracket went.

And before I mount the left board I rediscovered the center mount on the left board was trashed.

The swag press brake was really handy for this. Using 16 gauge steel I ended up fabricating one from 3 pieces, left side, top and right side. The piece was too narrow for the press brake to make it from one piece.

Old saw horses and 2x boards sure make a handy cutting bench.

Drilled holes and slotted to use the square shank mounting bolts. Of course I did a lot of in place fitting before drilling and plug welding in place.

This took most of two Saturdays as we've been spending a lot of time with the Grandsons coming over. Prayers answered and God is good!

Nice fab work Doug! I will have to do the same with a couple running board mounts too.

Nice work A/D!

I have been looking at the Swag press brake for a while. How do you like it?

Sid...Thank you for your kind words. If I need to make another I am going to make the small hole a little smaller. This will still work ok though I would like it a bit neater. Maybe someone out there sells reproductions? Took me about 6 hours in the shop to get it done.

Hey thanks Ron! The Swag press brake is a nice little unit. A downside is it won't bend to 90 degrees so I later ordered their top plate which allows bending beyond 90 degrees. The fingers make this one pretty versatile though I haven't had time to explore all it can do.

Here is a little assembly thread I put together on assembling the Swag press brake http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=657465

On an old subject this is the direction I plan to go on fuel fill. Found it on here in a Suburban build thread.

Those "little" things always take a lot of time!

Nice progress Doug. Looks cool to see some body parts bolted back on (even if it is only temporary).

So you have to reach inside the fender to put gas inside it? Ha!

Advanced Design 01-24-2016 07:08 PM

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait

Kees...thanks, those little things do take lots of time. It took 12 hours to do the left rear fender and left running board install and about 20 minutes for the right side.

Hey Marc, put it together, take it apart...it did feel good to stand back and look at it for a bit. Now that I know it all fits I can take it apart again. Then on to the next item.

Sid, thank you for giving me the best laugh I've had all week! I guess since I made the battery location almost unservicable I thought I would do the same with the gas fill too. :)

Great progress. Looks like gas filler will be top of the fender?

Thanks Chizzler. I was happy it all fit.

Yes Lowers thank you, I plan to run the fuel fill up to the top of the left fender. The pic above is from a Burb build here.

Always appreciate the encouragement and ideas guys.

Nice fab work on the running board mount Doug. Trick looks good with the fender back on even if it's only temporary.

haha and here I was thinking you were going to stick the pump inside the rear fender to fill, like a hidden filler

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait

Thanks 65sub. My running board mount isn't much after following your cool build though I enjoyed making it. It was nice to see some body parts on, even temporarily.

Coach, thank you. Really enjoying your irs install!

Joedoh, you know, maybe I could leave the fuel fill inside the fender, then try to find a full service station....:)

Guys, always appreciate the encouragement and ideas.

Like ...I had the right front fender and inner installed a few weeks ago. You know how the inner bolts right to the toe board on the right side. My new floor needs drilling, so I center punched the holes in the inner fender to mark the floor for drilling. Took it back apart...and I can't see the punch marks. Will use a paint dot next time.

Been getting a little shop time with the wife and a lot of weekend Grandson time. What a blessing.

After exploring a number of different alternatives for the fuel tank I decided to Contact Dwcsr (Dave) at Hollister Road Company for one of his tank and fill pipe packages. You can tell Dave is really knowledgable when he posts to share his projects or helps a member with their questions. I figured I would rely on someone who knows what they are doing, has done this before and provide some business to one of our vendors

Dave promptly replied to my inquiry, talked about a package, put a quote together, and made it really easy to do business. Plus he is a nice guy and really knows how to do this.

His package includes the fill pipes and hoses so he sent me the below drawing to comparison measure to the Burb.

Nice detail and I figured out the fill pipe will go up through the left fender about where the angle is at the two inch mark. Took some pictures and measurements on the Burb and sent them back to Dave.

I was amazed when a FedEx truck showed up today with the tank and parts from Tanks and Hollister Road Company. Wow, this tank is really nice! I used a tank from Spectra for my last build and there is no comparison to this one.

Like an excited little kid, I had to check the parts. Everything is here that was shipped from Tanks. Dave will be sending the fill pipe later.

The tank fits nicely and next time I pull the body back off the frame, I will build an upper cradle to position the top of the tank and use the straps to hold it up.

The same FedEx truck had the Hooker exhaust manifolds from Amazon. I followed FarmerSid's lead on these and ordered them Thursday.

They fit! Left side has a lot of clearance and the right side top of frame rail will need 1/4" or so shaved off.

While these look to be nice pieces, I was surprised to read in the instructions they can't be used for a new engine break in as the ceramic coating isn't cured yet. Hooker advises to use some other exhaust manifolds to break in the engine then install the new ones. They even give a break in process for the ceramic coating.

nice pics and parts. I was going to order that face shield real soon. as for the headers, not sure what they mean by breaking in and LS engine that is a roller setup. also wasn't aware of breaking in ceramic learn something new everyday is good.

Good looking parts Doug. I've never heard of a "break in " for ceramic coating either but I guess they would know best. I had mine coated by a local shop and just bolted them on and started driving.

Thanks 99, I think they must have a standard instruction sheet that goes with every set of manifolds.

Me neither 65. You would think for what these things cost they would be good to go. By the time I get this thing running, there is no way I will remember the break in procedure!

Thanks Marc. Maybe buy stock in Amazon.com too. An Ipad, paypal and Amazon.com are a handy, or dangerous, combination.

I went with black manifolds as it will better match the theme for the engine I have in mind. Day job and travel sure dampens progress. At same time day job and travel funds said progress. The catch 22 we all face.

Kees, yes on the headers. Finding what fits can be tough.

You are so right about Dwcsr. He is helping more than I expected...way more than your average Tanks dealer.

If it helps anyone, here is what I sent to Dwcsr, Dave at Hollister Road Company.

Grabbed a little shop time today to make the seat riser support mine was lacking. Pretty sure mine only ever had one as the seat riser pan and original floor section didn't show any witness marks.

Youngrodders does have two, so I bent this one up. I don't think I will weld them to the seat riser pan as the original ones weren't. Drilled these for plug welding to the floor.

Set the assembly in place to mark where the supports need to be plug welded to the floor. Naturally they landed right on top of the floor plug welds that hadn't been ground smooth yet. Took care of that and still have some tweaking around perimeter before welding the riser pan back in.
