Thanks Coach and Lower. Pretty simple piece ..... and watching you guys' builds, and others, is improving my skills.
Had a little shop time tonight, so I welded the supports in place, primed the perimeter with weld through and rest with primer. Small steps. Fizzy pic apologies! |

Just an aside, last summer I debated back and forth on selling my 35 Chevy project. Didn't want two projects and as cool as the 35 is, my heart wasn't in building it. We wanted something done to take grandsons along with us.
The car went to a real car guy and he has been moving forward with it to add to his collection. Cool part is we are staying in touch and he is providing updates. He sent this one today. Single stage black paint. I told him I changed my mind about selling it and want it back. :) |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Seeing progress pics of a car you pass on, is like a kick in the teeth. Cool that he keeps you updated though. I'm surprise that people still paint stuff in single stage anymore. Looks good though.

Nice project advanced design! I read through your whole build yesterday, you've been at it a while! Glad to hear your wife is ok, my project was on hold almost two years because my wife had cancer. Her's didn't turn out as good as yours unfortunately! I'm back to working on my truck, really enjoyed your build, thanks for posting

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Burb is looking good doug.

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Every small step is one step!!
The '35 is looking good!! The man I sold my Chevy Van to lives in Germany, still have great contact with him, also sent me updates of what he has done. I like that! Then you know the right guy bought it from you ;) |

Single stage paint....that laid down real nice
|
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
As much as it sucks to give up a project, it's nice to see it went to someone that is loving it.
|
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Iceburgh, it does look nice. Just what I had in mind too.
Lower, it does...I went back and forth a lot on the decision. The car was ready for final body work, paint and reassembly and all parts were on the shelf. It did go to a really good home though. Dave at Hollister Road Company is working hard to dial in the fuel fill pipe for the Burb. He emailed back and asked for a little more information which I should be able to provide Friday. The effort he is going to has me really impressed. And maybe when we get this figured out he will have a package for the AD burb fuel fill. Looking at steering intermediate shaft path last night. Just in general thinking things through. Borgenson will have plenty of u joints to make it work, and my home fabricated engine mount is taking up some important real estate...hmm. Might redo the mount. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Dave seems to be a super helpful person. He is always willing to help and has great advice. By the way, Your build looks great.

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
LOW A D...Man, I am so sorry to hear that. This is a terrible disease.... Thanks for following along on this build and you should get some award for wading through all of it. Apologies it is so long! If you haven't, start a build thread on your project. Would like to
AD, I do have a build thread titled "One piece at a time...51 Chev". Thanks for the comments. I'm not too good with computers, I don't know how to add my build to the bottom of each post? |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Thanks guys I appreciate the complements. I really enjoy doing these trucks for a living and this is an unusual build that I may not ever get in my shop, so its nice to have a hand in these types of builds even if its just making a fill tube or giving advice.
As for the build its a very nicely done build for a truck that has significance in our truck history. Its nice to see someone taking the pains to do it right and not just pouring Bondo in spots they don't want to fix. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Fountain, I agree, Dave is very knowledgable and helpful. And thank you for your kind words.
LOW AD, every time I need to update my signature line I refer to the instructions Ogre put together here.... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...80#post6253380. I want to check out your build and will go find it. Dave, my Metalmeet buddies would never let me live down using bondo. :) and as far as advice, I am non-ego driven with open ears. Thanks for your help and kind words. I will get the additional information you requested Friday night or Saturday. Guys, it is pretty difficult to do what Dave is doing to help with a fill pipe due to the lack of information he has. My fault, not his. And I know we will get it figured out. Thanks again Dave. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Thanks for the advice on the signature line but i was lost at step one!!!! Computers hate me and i dont like computers for the most part!! I'm very proud of myself that I figured out how to start my own build thread and post pics! Guess my posts wont have a link to my build!!!

Hey Doug, moving along nicely. Finally got me hook up at the home for internet. It's about 4:30 here, so I'm trying to catch up with my subs. Thanks for the call the other day. Your bud...Jim

Hey Low AD, hope you can make it to MetalMeet sometime! Folks from all around the world have and do attend.
Jim, Always great to talk with you. We will have to catch up soon. Over time the shop lights have been failing. New bulbs didn't help. Finally I was fed up with the poor lighting conditions and had 12 of these T5 lights put up. WOW! It is really bright in there now. |

With the drivers seat pan in place, the fit at the back side was too high to connect easily with the floor step. A 16 gauge piece of metal would take up the thickness about right.
So, I laid out a piece the size needed, drilled it every 4 inches for plug welding before cutting out, welded it to the step on the floor, then reinstalled the seat pan and seat to measure for a steering column. |

The shopping list included a black powdercoated steering column, an upper mount for a 66 Chevy (I think) and one of the lower ball swivel mounts.
Yeah, I wimped out on making my own mounts and just wanted to get this part done. Of course, since the column was powdercoated, the upper mount didn't fit and needed some internal honing. The lower mount was already machined for the powder coated column and fit well. While I have used and liked ididit products since 1994 or so, the powdercoating on the column isn't very robust and marked very easily contacting the upper mount. To be fair, the edge of the upper mount is very sharp and maybe I caused the marring by being too forceful. The upper mount base still needs some metal work under dash on the left side. And the column was moved a bit to the left, centering it with the gauges so the lower exit will have a straighter access to the steering rack....once I revise the engine mount again. May get to that Saturday. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Nice progress. Awesome new T5's. Very bright in there.
|
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Looks great Doug. What length column did you go with? I have an Ididit in my 48 and plan on going with the same for the 53. I was going to go with a steel one and paint it. Was the powder coat that much more?
Your progress looks great. Marc |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Thanks Chizzler. The T5 lights are impressive and I can see what I am doing again.
Marc, The column is a 32 inch and the powdercoating was too expensive for what it is though I don't remember the prices. They did give me a 10% make you feel good discount. It just saves me the hassle of getting it painted. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
looking real good. I feel your pain in the PCoating. The booster I got didn't seem robust either. If there is a way to save a penny people hop on it. the best saying I ever heard that could relate to many things, but def this industry is....."a steady nickel is better than a quick dime"
|
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
nice.
|
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Nice. Being able to see with a nice bright shop is like having a third hand holding the flash light.
|
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Looking good Doug!
Nice bright shop again!! If you have the column still "open" at the top, can you show me how the turnlight switch comes in its original (middle) place? When you turn the steeringwheel back to the middle? Hope you understand what I mean, I think I miss that part... Was hoping to make something, but I can't figure out how it exactly works. Thanks! |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Doug, shop looks good and bright. Mark and I have been replacing my old one's with the new T-5's....Jim

Thanks 99...I like that steady nickle approach. And I have a black pc booster on my list. Maybe I should stay away from the one from Pirate Jacks.
Thank you Iowaboy...if I keep fixing things I don't do right the first time maybe I will eventually get this one on the road. Lowers, thanks...the brightness difference is startling, and really shows the dirt. Hey Kees, thanks. When I get back to the shop I will take then post up a picture. I believe you are needing a look at the cancelling cam or mechanism. Jim, those lights are really incredible. Hope 10 years from now we don't find out they cause cataracts. Think I mentioned I need to do something with the upper mount as this one doesn't sit flat to the bottom of the dash. Will stare at it for awhile and either cut the dash or use a different upper. Last one I used the stock upper. For the Burb fuel fill Dave has whipped up this one. I know he put too much time into making it and I suggested it looks good, should work fine. If not is my fault and we will make it work. |
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
Those lights look great. A shop can NEVER have too many lights!!
|
Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait
