Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
I like the wood Kees. It looks good. The pictures in front of the house are very nice. Saw some similar ones on FB.
I've never came across a starter mounting boss that needed milling. |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Nice!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Very nice. Are you leaving the bed like that? I think it suits the truck the way it is.

A lot of people find it way cool, when I drive around, always getting thumbs up!! So on with some small updates. I wasn't really happy with the wipers. I got on my back under the dash and came to the conclusion that it had to be modified again. First I made the circle smaller, so that the turn or revolution of the wipers is smaller. That's way better!! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/pZ...u=w697-h935-no It's hard to see maybe, but at both sides it's 8mm shorter. Next I found out that the right side wiperrod came at 180 degrees, thus right at, the connection, which made a bad sound. If it was going any further, then I was in real trouble, the rod would go the other way and cause damage. So I lengthen the rod by an 1/2", problem solved again :metal: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/e6...A=w697-h935-no Only have to buy some wiperblades from an old Bug, the modern flexwipers are no good on this Ol' Truck  After driven a few miles now, being adjusting the trans the way I want to shift it, I also found it time to get my much needed Rockabilly tunes in the truck. I had saved the old sheetmetal glovebox, build by the PO, modified it a little, and made a "Radio Mount". So when time allows, I mount it in the truck, so no finished pictures yet. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/rz...=w1247-h935-no |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
kees
truck looks great. so impressed with what you've done, and the support you've given me via mail - many thanks AVO shocks were direct from AVO in UK. i found when i went to le mans that i had to take some camping stuff (ok....a lot of camping stuff as my 18 year old daughter came too), my rear wishbones were not quite level anymore, the diff was too low, so if the truck was ever loaded with weight, i am sure it would become worse, so i just fitted 450 lb springs to the rear. i could increase the ride height, but i think the ride height is about where i want t to be and the rear was pretty soft before. I will remove a couple of the front shims too, which will drop the front 3/4 inch ..... when I'm finished messing with the ride height and suspension, i will get the geometry checked so it is better than i can achieve with string and a ruler!, but it feels good |

I'll help where ever I can, I got lots of help too from this board!! Are you willing to give me the partsnumbers on those shocks via PM? Their website isn't very clear to me.... My ride height is now perfect, haven't touch the ground yet. I have it at Jag specifications now, had the raise the back a little. Front is good. Already had a few hundred kilo's in the back and think the shocks are too soft too. Try to get a few Miles every day to get all the bugs out ;) |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

the stock jag ones, which were new dampers and springs were definitely too soft as the diff sat too low vs the wheels, and i couldn't move the dampers anymore upright as the springs would clash with the chassis. the avo springs are a little skinnier, but not enough to move the top mount any wider. hope that helps, |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Okay, Thanks Steve!
I'll wait on what you'll find out about the rating. Then I will sent them an email for a quote.... |

Today I was hauling stuff around: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/0J...=w1247-h935-no Is the truck so big or is that motorbike so small????:lol: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3_...=w1247-h935-no That thing won't start, he asked me if I wanted to take a look at it ;) |

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Well, the weather was bad yesterday.
But today a lot better, so I mananged to get the first stage done. Putting up the paintbooth ;) When I parked this way, a little boy with his dad walked by:" Look dad he needs three parkingspots!!" Well, in Europe they drive only small cars :lol: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Ib...V=w697-h935-no Lettering done, only must do the outlines in white: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DK...=w1247-h935-no I also painted the Fleetside enblems on in Ghost style, gloss black on satin black. The letters are the original font, only at 80%: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Bt...=w1247-h935-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/lG...b=w697-h935-no Now it's waiting for good weather again for the outlines, and then clean all of it. Also a question for the Task Force owners: Where did you mount your fire extinguisher? Can you show me?? Thanks! |

for me the 450 ago are working well. they compress a small amount when i drop the truck back to the floor, and only a little more when i sit on the bed. I'm happy with these. the lettering on the truck looks great BTW |

Good looking truck. Love the fleetside.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
The lettering looks great. The ghost Fleetside will be cool.

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks guys!!
Are there transmission guru's here? I got a problem, but this time I don't trust the torque converter.... As you might know, we repaired the trans itself a few weeks ago, the frictionplates were separated from their steel plates, probably due to coolant in the trans (see the pics a few postings back). Is there a possibility that this could be the case with the internals of the converter also? If there is such a clutch in there.... What I find is that this trans is very soft when you put it in gear, you won't feel it shift from P to D or R. Also there is no change in rpm from P to D or R. My TH350 was much "stronger" when you put it in gear, plus you saw it drop in rpm and felt it was pulling, you had to put your feet on the brake. This TH 400 never did that, never felt it shift in gear, also in D the gearchange was very smooth. I could adjust it a little by turning the little screw in the vacuummodulator. The changes were noticable. Now the truck stood for two days and have almost excactly what I had before. Must give way to much throttle to get a respons. Oil level is good, smells not burned, looks bright red. If I have some time I will let some oil out to see how it looks. So my question, could this be a converter failure?? As the trans itself has maybe 50 miles on it after repair.... Also no strange sounds heard while driving or idling or when charging gears. Please help?? |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
So, I'm back from vacation.
Had a great time with the family!! I just looked at the trans, tried a few things, nothing seems to help... After three weeks standing still it shifts like never before. Seems no one has an answer to this trans problem, I think the converter is broke, but I also found very dirty oil after some 50 miles. I don't trust it anymore, so I got myself a TH700R4 trans. Some things have to be changed, have to make a new a new driveshaft also. The trans is from 1991, out of a Caprise hearse with almost 80000 miles on it. Hope this one is better.... Here we go again... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/wE...=w1240-h930-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9m...=w1240-h930-no It's almost two inches longer than a TH400 and just went in without unbolting extra stuff! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/C4...=w1240-h930-no Now have to buy or make a bracket for the TV cable, make the shiftlever at the trans, change oil and filter and find a driveshaft we could modify to fit. Then I hope the trans troubles are history!! |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
That should work out nicely, you'll get some highway speed out of that one. Don't forget to hook up the lockup converter clutch. What ratio is your Jag rear?
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Jag rear has 2.88 with limited slip diff.
I was looking for a diagram to make the lock up work in 2, 3 and 4. Handy when you tow something. Ofcourse brake release! |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
With a 2.88 and overdrive you should get good fuel mileage! There are some kits that use an engine vacuum diaphragm switch with power run through the brake light switch. Not sure which gears you can lock the converter, mine just does it in third or overdrive.
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Hope the new to you trans works good.
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Big thumbs up Kees. Swapping a trans out by the street is hard core cool. Hope it works well!
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Now THAT's a vacation...4 weeks?? Good luck with the fresh trans. dug
|
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Kees
Just a thought, did you drain the old converter and replace with fresh oil? Sorry to hear about the tranny problems, Good luck Keep on keepin on Nut Case |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Good to see you back!!
Mark... |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Thanks guys!!
@ Nut Case, a few posts back you can see what I did with the converter, I think the problem of the TH400 is in the valvebody, as if it at times builds no pressure. Stuck valve or something. Had this problem before with this trans, since the beginning of the build troubles with this trans...Took it apart three times, had enough of it  Small update.... "New" trans is completely in and working :metal: I found a steel driveshaft I could shorten, so I bought that one. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/lm...Q=w480-h640-no Looks very rusty, but it's only surface rust. How I shorten the driveshaft in pics: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/0k...Q=w480-h640-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/w1...w=w480-h640-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Kn...g=w480-h640-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/po...g=w480-h640-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/0P...g=w480-h640-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ec...A=w480-h640-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/uS...Q=w360-h640-no With this all done, I had to make a new shift lever, because the Overdrive trans has a longer "reach". I made a new lever with the mountinghole for the shift rod at another place, otherwise I couldn't get it to work properly. No pics made of that, yet... Also, the TH700R4 uses a Throttle Valve cable, where a TH400 uses a vacuum line. So I had to buy or make a new bracket at the carb to take this TV cable. I got a used bracket which I modified a bit to take the both of the cables. Throttle and TV cable. I also had to make a pin to where the TV cable mount on. The modified bracket: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/zd...g=w480-h640-no New turned TV cable pin: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/L_...A=w480-h640-no Bolted to the carb, cables hooked on: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/yk...A=w640-h480-no Don't mind the return springs, I've got to buy some new ones.... This afternoon I drove the truck and I must say, it drives really good :metal: Must finetune the TV cable, it now shifts a bit early, but I think my transmission troubles are history!! Only have to wire the Lock Up converter and I'm Ready to Rumble the streets!! |
Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
Oh, no, I can't see the pictures!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed
