skymangs Very nice looking truck!! What do you have to lift your bed?

I have an air cylinder that ties into the existing air system, so all you have to do is push a button and wala; the bed tilts up. The air cylinder also keeps the bed down.

Coach: that photo is awesome, but no fair. You live in an area with cool roads, backdrops and sunsets!
Sitting here this Sunday morning looking over all these posts. What a great year it was. Lots of cruise's, nice trip to Italy w/the mrs, marring my beautiful daughter of in August. Supposed to get a terrible storm here today in NJ.
Just thought I'd post a little fly by of the 7th annual Flemington Historical Speedway Society show last Saturday, 10/21. Weather was unreal. Almost 1000 cars. Great fun, friends, cars and stories! If weather holds, hope to see some of you at Vargo Speedway next Saturday!

Here's my truck at the show, with my buddy's 53 next to mine...

Came across this gem recently. I change my mind ever few months on the paint job I want on my truck. This is the first time I've seen one that I possibly could use as an interim paint job step. Anyone know of the builder or any other pictures? I can't even remember how I found it.

I searched for that white truck but couldn't find that pic even. I was searching what's on the door... Rat brothers garage, El Paso Texas. I found a Facebook page for that garage name out of Socorro in the EP area.... But nothing more of the truck.

That's sick man! Odd question...did you go with hard lines or soft lines? What size?

e015475 01-06-2018 09:41 AM

Re: How about some pics of bagged 47-59

Gigamanx, I think I have the same question.

Getting ready to plumb my airbag system and would like to hear experiences with either hard or soft line too.

DOT approved push-in fittings are kinda expensive and I hear a lot of guys complain about chasing down leaks.

My plan is to plumb the airbags in -4 AN fittings (1/4" tube) with aluminum line. Stainless might be a better option, but it is difficult to flare without cracking and the fatigue resistance of the aluminum should be ok if it is fastened to the chassis correctly. To keep the cost of down for the AN fittings, I'm using steel JIC fittings, nuts and sleeves.

I have a Parker Rolo-flair tool to make the flares in the aluminum and have had good luck making leak free connections with it. For the threaded connections, the plan is to use a anaerobic thread seal (Locktite 565) instead of teflon tape or pipe dope.

Any other suggestions from guys with bagged trucks?

Re: How about some pics of bagged 47-59

there isn't much difference in either setup, more aesthetics rather than function. I had no problems with soft line and PTC fittings. I used blue monster tape on threads. I used 1/2 lines on my last bagged truck with accuair manifold. Current one Im using 3/8 with manual valves. I'm sure you may read plenty of debate out there, but I'm just giving my take with it.

Re: How about some pics of bagged 47-59

I am using 3/8" lines Accuair valve. I ran rubber air line up front and have PTC nylon line out back. So far 10,000 mi all good. My truck is 5000lb.

Did you C notch your frame? If not do you have a picture of just the rear end bag set up on the frame? Thanks Great looking truck.

e015475 01-09-2018 08:13 PM

Re: How about some pics of bagged 47-59

Sorry I didn't mention that is was a Jag IRS - and there's no C notch. It was narrowed about 3" side to side and tube steel half shafts replace the Jag's forged half shafts.

https://talk.classicparts.com/media/imag0291.6811/full

The ladder truss supports the differential and is mounted on urethane bushings. The bolt that hang the diff in the truss are about even with the bottom of the wood boards in a stock bed.

https://talk.classicparts.com/media/imag0293.6809/full

This bracket assembly holds the differential assembly in position and keeps the pinion angle constant

https://talk.classicparts.com/media/imag0273.6802/full

The airbags ride on a trailing arm that connects to the Jag's LCA. It is a 5" Slam bag that does the same job as the Jag's coil-over springs.

https://talk.classicparts.com/media/...rbag.6686/full

Another photo

https://talk.classicparts.com/media/...-too.6685/full

The front of the airbag trailing arm - it has the same roll center as the LCA of the Jag IRS

https://talk.classicparts.com/media/...-arm.6684/full

And yes. a four link and a c-notch would have been a lot easier. But it's all about the nostalgia of the Jag rear end

Oh, and here's a photo of the truck with the running boards on sitting on the bump stops. There's about three inches from the running boards to the concrete floor.

When I was a kid in the 60's, a lot of the plastic model kits of hot rods had Jag rear ends - I'm sure there's better solutions out there, but it is all about the nostalgia and childhood memories.

Thanks for the compliment, Mudman!

Re: How about some pics of bagged 47-59

Well you know many won't see it or even know what it is but...you do and I think of that on my own builds, it's about what we want and like right, but cool when others appreciate what we've built too. Keep at it, very nice build.
Mudman.

Very nice GMC man,
Make sure you get a couple of linear actuators so you can flip a switch and make your wood bed open, Be a shame for others not to see your work. Very very nice. To me, its always whats on the inside...
