A little dirty, but this is how my '77 K10 Silverado short bed sits currently.. (actually, it has rained recently.. It's probably a little cleaner now. Natural car wash :D).

Here's my 85 Stepside. Just dropped in a nice warmed up small block last weekend. Just in time for the snow to fly! Can't wait to get it back out next season. There a lot of gorgeous trucks on this thread...nice to see others appreciate this vintage of truck.

Sorry, no pic's of the motor yet. If I have time tonight, I'll snap one. The truck has been put back into storage for the winter. Not much to look at right now...just a black small block with an aluminum intake.

Well heres the new engine....like I said, not much to look at now. I'll bling it up a little next spring. Need to switch over to a posi and lower gear. Right now it will blister the right rear tire. Suppose to be putting out about 330 hp, but with the 3:08 gear it sure doesn't feel like it.

Do you know what year abouts that motor is? Was it from a different vehicle or was it a crate motor or..? Thanks.

I ask because I know nothing about the motor that was swapped into the truck I now have and it has centerbolt valve covers just like that. So Im trying to narrow down the information I might possibly have in mine.

I'm not sure of the engine year...it has been machined .040 over and built to ZZ4 specs., not a crate motor. The heads are Vortec Heads that have been refreshed with bigger valves. If you have Center Bolt heads, then they are Vortec heads. I honestly couldn't tell you when they started making them, but from what I've heard they are a better design from the previous heads. Of course that may be just an opinion. I don't have any facts to back that up.

Your motor could have come from anywhere really, the center bolt valve covers started in '86 and went on until the end. Both the 305 and 350, cars and truck alike got them. This is also when the angle of the intake bolts near the center EGR ports change and when the one piece rear main seal came into play. I'd caution though that just because they are center bolt heads doesn't mean they are Vortec's and doesn't mean they are on a matching one piece rear seal block. Vortec heads didn't come about until 1996. Even the non Vortec flow better than their predecessors, and the later the casting the better usually. The best way to find out is to check the serial number on the block and look for the casting number on the heads. Then you'll know exactly what you've got (or what someone started with anyway)

Thats some good info. I've been out of the hot rod scene for over 20 years now...just getting back in. There's a lot to learn. Its nice to have a thread like this and thanks for setting the head issue straight. I'll try to keep my input to what I actually know...Brakes!

Oooh. Great. Thanks. If you want to check my build thread for a few engine shots, maybe you have any additional ideas, feel free to post them in my build thread. I really want to figure out what I have here. It's semi entertaining in the sense that I feel like I'm being a detective while working on being a mechanic.. hah. Thanks again for the info! :metal:
