Re: Project: Shiro
Looks legit...even the best bought drivers seem to suffer from inner rocker woes!

The engine is in the frame and the transmission crossmember has been modified and installed. It's been maybe 2 years since I've welded anything... and it shows.

So, I've been all WOO-HOO because the chassis is coming together. High fives all around, knuckle bumps, jump and bumps just like after a touchdown. Then I breakout out the angle grinder and a stripping disc to investigate a sketchy area on the drivers door lower hinge pillar. Then the I'm all  then :dohh: and I :cuss: the P.O. before sitting down to :whine:. The question is, do I replace or repair?
Checkout the lame attempt to hide the rust with some rattle can white paint. Attachment 1355175 And wallah! The rust free becomes, well... not so much. Attachment 1355176 Another spot on the inside of the pillar. Attachment 1355177 |
Re: Project: Shiro
Tough to tell from the pics, but looks like they could be patched.
|
Re: Project: Shiro
When you get that rocker off the whole bottom of that pillar will probably be gone also. New pillar patches are available for those areas.

Re: Project: Shiro
I'm really sorry that truck was worse than advertised. You'll still have a great one once it's all done but I know it's more than you planned when you bought it. Keep the pics coming, it's starting to take shape.

Re: Project: Shiro
Looks great Ernie. It's really coming along. You going to powder coat the frame?
|
Re: Project: Shiro
Bummer about the new rust discovery. I'm sure it can all be fixed. It will just take some time. I think it's safe to say that 99.9% of these trucks have some rust in them. Just a matter of time before it shows.....Keep your head up and plow through it. You'll be done in no time.

Re: Project: Shiro
Sucks about the rust but that's child's play compared to what I found when I tore my truck apart. Stinks but it'll make for a very nice truck when done. Plus you know it'll be done right.

Re: Project: Shiro
Thanks for the comments guys I appreciate it, but I was really just trying to be funny. I know there is some rust to be dealt with, and yes I'm pissed the P.O. misrepresented the truck, but I know it's not nearly as bad as some of you have tackled. I will admit I am nervous about the unknown, as I've never done sheet metal repair. The great thing for me, but unfortunate for a few of you, is that these repairs have been done before and are well documented; mcbassin's web site documenting his journey through pictures is awesome. The other thread that documents a case of massive rust repair is sgaylord's "Jezebel". Both of these guys pulled off amazing results after starting with trucks that were much worse than mine, and thankfully did a great job documenting their journey. So, I will do my homework, collect up some new tools :metal: and with a lot of help get this part of the build knocked out. Thanks again for the comments; I hope I can provide some more substantive updates in the near future. Until then I will continue to cut up and post tid-bits that happen in the shop.

Didn't really feel like going to the garage tonight so I downloaded House of Kolor Digital Paint Booth to play around with... what do you all think of these ideas?
