Re: GM Semis

Looks like we're gonna get run over by that Cannonball from C & A Transport. I've been confused by GMC's model #s in that mid-late 50s era. I have brochures that show the Cannonball as a 72" BBC DF 860, DR 860, DFRW 860, then the DF 920, and DFW 920 as well .

Then there was the lightweight D 860, 90" BBC from the late '50s where the cab had part aluminum skin and hood and they hyped it as lower weight than White 9000, IHC 2000D, Mack B models. I believe it was in the late '40s or early '50s where GMC offered an aluminum blocked 6-71 for weight consious haulers .

That's a great shot, what a place to mount air horns. Now tell us where this was taken because I've seen at least a hundred pics in this pull off or rest stop. Some pass in California?

I'm not sure whether its north or south bound I-5 rest area by Lebec on the top of the grapevine.
Way before my time. But I've been 2-3 trips a week over that hill for the last 25 ish years.

Cool Truck hauling some Cool Cars.

I don't believe the picture is real old.

Yeah, wish we could see that V-Emblem better.

Also would be interested in the Series Emblem. They put them on the door on the B-Model GMC's.

True, but they are mixed brands and mixed years. Looks like a Classic Car Hauler to me, but if I'm wrong, it won't be the first time, lol.

There are hundreds of prints of that rest area all over. I'd bet they're the real deal.

Those are two different trucks. I'd say its a company that hauled used cars. Late 60s, early 70s.

Lots of great photos here! We have a C50 Custom, C60 Custom Deluxe, and GMC 6000 out in the pasture on the fence row. Poor things probably wont see the road again in my lifetime. Not quite semi trucks but just a step down from semis lol

These photos (and many more here) are some that I posted on Flickr. These two trucks were operated in the 1960's by Automobile Transport Co of Calif. The company was owned by the Hansens of today's Hansen and Adkins. Many of the Nissans sold in the SW were delivered by ATC. Note the old tags and no DOT number. All of the thousands of these photos shot in this spot were shot by Brian Williams and many of the negatives were traded to Rick Manz and Ron Adams. The cars are used, I think they are rental cars.

I know a old driver in his eighties. He transported new Chevrolet cars & trucks between St Louis mo and Oakland Calif in the mid fifties. They had two 54 snub nose trucks and the trailer hauled 4 vehicles. One truck was a chev with a 261. The other was a GMC with a 270 engine. They traveled the old route 66. He claims it took ten days of hard running to make the trip in the chev and only 8 days in the GMC. He states he hauled lots of the new 55,56 & 57 chevys. He would sometimes unload them unhook the speedometer and drive them. Picked up women and drag raced in them!
