Is your truck still on hold due to work, life and kids? Don't work yourself to death, take a vacation and work on this thing already...LOL.

Here it is, an actual update. I ordered a u-joint and some double d shaft, then went to cutting. I need to do a little research on welding dissimilar metals. I'm trying to tig the stainless u-joint to the mild steel steering shaft. I know I need to get some straight argon, but I'm trying to figure out the best filler metal to use. I'm at 309L at the moment but need to call my brother to confirm. I need to fill the first hole in the frame that I cut and then realized the shafts wouldn't mate up. The instructions from No Limit for the rack didn't exactly work for me. More to come, hopefully it doesn't take me another year.
|
Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.
I use 308L with a regular mix gas.
|
Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.
I might be wrong but I think 309 is the correct rod. An 'ol timer taught me "odd number when welding odd (dissimilar) metals." That's what I've always went off of. :dig:
|
Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.
I would also go with 309L and straight Argon.

Since I held off on welding the u-joint to the shaft I decided to fill the holes from the steering shaft mock up and the extra engine mount holes from the factory. Cleaned it up quite a bit.

Slick!

Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.
Dude you have some mad skills......Your crazy...But you have mad skills...lol
I dig the outa the box approach you take for stuff. I never even considered running my steering linkage like that for my LSA build.....wicked idea good on ya |
Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.
I forgot to mention that I was impressed with the way you handled the steering shaft through the top frame section. Most would have been stymied with the possible resolution ... Nicely done.

Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.
Hey man, I know you're busy and everything but if you have anytime I'd love to come hang out in your garage. I still don't have a truck of my own to build but it's always a learning experience just watching someone work. I know very little about fabrication or welding but if I can help in anyway at all even if it's just holding something in place or moving something, I'd be happy to.

Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.
just finished reading, such a good job fabbing everything. any more updates? looks sweet so far.

So, just tying up loose ends from a while back. I welded a few threaded couplers together to get the sway bar to clear the steering linkage. I had to make them a little higher to make sure they cleared lock to lock, bags all the way up and all the way down.
|
Re: Shrunken66Stroker's build thread.
I love your work, man. Excellent fab skills, and you aren't afraid to tackle anything. I look forward to your updates!

I got some parts in the mail yesterday. The steering column bearings came in, but you guys probably don't need a pic of those! Here's the the exciting stuff. It's a Holley mid-rise efi intake. I'm going to go through all of my parts and see what I have and what's missing to build this engine asap. It will be a few months till the time and money come together but I've got plenty to do till then.
