Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Nice work on the hood. Hope all is going in better directions.
Keep up the great work Man!!!! |
Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Had a pretty good day today. Got my work done. Had some fun. Got a few minutes to get the sandblaster out and clean a few parts that will need to be painted soon.
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps48c9e9e5.jpg I have to go out of town for a couple days for work, but I hope to get some more time later in the week or this coming weekend. Need to get that damn sanding done, paint the hood hinges and mount the hood and edge the tailgate stuff so I can mount that. I can see the little night light way off in the distance, but it is there and growing brighter. |

Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
This build has inspired me and my 14 yr old son to start a build for his first ride. We found a decent 65 short step that we are keeping basic stock with rust repair paint tires brakes all done by he and I. Our budget is 3000 and we spent a third of that on the original purchase. Thanks for the inspiration

Nice to see a full shot of that c10, rather then snap shots of it behind the jimmy. Very nice looking. Is that an original color on it?

But being a (sorta) single dad, taking care of the house, daily chores, etc., plus my workload has been up lately, has taken its toll on garage time. Today I finally got some progress. I started with some 150 grit 3M paper that is supposed to prevent load up. I just used it on a small flexible block to do the top of the bed rail and around the wheel arches. Then I wet sanded the rest of the driver side with 220 grit. This knocked off the top layer of the primer which I had so much trouble with because it would load up the paper in seconds. Once I cleaned up that mess and it dried off I started to block it out with 180 on my long board. It worked great. No load up problems at all. I did almost the whole bed side with one sheet of paper on the block. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps2079f1bc.jpg By that time I was tired and had to stop sanding. During the sanding time I would take a rest and was taking care of the hood hinges. I got them sprayed with etching primer... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps609ced94.jpg Then a couple coats of rattle can semi flat black. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps06abad39.jpg I almost forgot to spray the bolts again. Always do that, but I remembered as I was doing the 2nd coat on the hinges. Tragedy avoided... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psa7ab1e73.jpg I only have a few small spots so far that need a little skim coat to smooth it out. A little touch up with the primer here and there and it should be good. Probably another 4 hours or so of sanding and I'll be getting it fired up for the drive over to the body shops paint booth to spray it. :metal: |
Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Great progress! That G2 levels it all out nice, and you can go from there. Glad to see light at the end of the tunnel.
Sorry about the troubles. I hope it all evens out with a minimum of damage to all involved. It's hard to be the first one to shove, even in a bad situation, but someone's gotta do it. I'm glad you told us, I've been wondering and worrying about ya. Please know we're all here for ya. Hey, spring's a-comin! Get that sucker ready for top-off motoring! (and really, who doesn't enjoy that?) |

Brief update. I got the hood hinges on. Whoop-de-do, I know. But hey, it's something. And I'm still a dummy when it comes to painting the bolts. I remembered to paint enough to mount the hinges to the fenders, but forgot to do the ones for the hood to the hinges. :dohh: http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps1c919d9b.jpg So after painting 4 more bolts, I decided to take care of a duplicate e-brake cable problem. There was one on the chassis that was hooked up to the brakes. Another on the tub that was hooked to the foot pedal. I figured the one on the chassis was the better option to keep, which meant removing the one from under the dash. That is NOT a fun job. I feel like a straightened out pretzel right now. Stupidest pic in the thread here. Showing a single e-brake cable for all you pic lovers that just can't get enough. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps090e623f.jpg That job isn't quite done. Need to re-adjust it underneath and install the new rubber grommet. The hard part is over though. The hood should go on tomorrow. I'd like to get the cowl edges painted and the tailgate edges and hinge parts also. At that point all of the body parts will be edges and installed. Just more blocking and get it running for the drive over to the body shop for paint. Maybe this month yet. I can dare to dream. |
Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Love the single e-brake cable pic.:metal: Yes, under dash stuff is not fun.
Got a pic of you being a straightened pretzel? Glad to hear things are smoothing out. Doing good work Man! |

Then I prepared myself for working under the dash from the driver side door with the seat and steering wheel in place. Its a 2 handed job to get the nut and bolt out and in again on the clamp holding the e-brake cable to the pedal assembly...

But I eventually got moving again and got cleaned up. I only wear this jacket at home when I know I won't be seen by anyone I know (that doesn't already live with me). A gift from a great aunt. Well, she's not that great as you can tell from her taste in jackets.

Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Got the hood back on, but I'm having some trouble getting it lined up right. Acts like its twisted but fit before the sanding. I might have used a different hinge on one side and its not sitting down in the back on the driver side like it did before. Nothing I can't fix, just a chore. :waah:

Maybe you were looking at it when you were a pretzel.
Diggin the hood. You'll get it. Waiting for the paint!!! |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallax After the hood was on I realized I forgot to paint the hood latch part, and those bolts. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps4373b295.jpg And I decided I wanted to get the inner fender tubs undercoated. I have one new one, one used one. Cleaned up the underside a bit with brake cleaner. The used one got etch primer on the bare metal areas. The old undercoat that is left there is solid. Sandblasting couldn't get it off. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psb9c33d31.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psacd64e93.jpg A quick coat of paint... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psf7605e0e.jpg While that was drying I remembered to drill the holes for the fender emblem on the driver side. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps66b1226e.jpg Then I worked on the hood some more. I got the latch parts on so it would pull down the front completely. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps2fec5669.jpg Worked on getting the back corner down on the driver side. I noticed that even if I pushed it wouldn't budge, and it should have. So I looked and found the back corner was hitting the mount tab of the fender. Follow the pencil point... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps3ec7360d.jpg So I slid the hood forward a bit and it dropped down, but not quite all the way yet. I have the core support as far over to the passenger side as I can get it. But the gap on the passenger side is real tight. Probably need to shim it some more, but that makes the alignment with the door there worse than it is, and it's a domino effect. My truck panel alignment went much smoother than this. Gonna try the cowl fit tomorrow and see how that goes. Here are pics of the current alignment of the hood. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...pse8005ad3.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps14c50723.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps21321039.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...pse53a68d2.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...pse4a774c3.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps3f069900.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps30800482.jpg Then after all of that I finally sprayed the undercoat on the inner fender tubs... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps2c5f8cb3.jpg Tomorrow I will probably sand some more. |
Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Wanted to get the tailgate and cowl edged and installed. That didn't happen. But the hood is on and the driver side has been blocked with 220 grit. :metal:
http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps28b51968.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psb0cb4397.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps94e15d59.jpg Need to touch up a few spots, then hit it with 320. Tailgate and cowl soon. Part of the reason I didn't get all I wanted done is that I wanted to celebrate having a full weekend off and some good weather with some outdoor cooking. The rest of the reason is a bit of laziness. Notice the smoke rolling out? That is not burning food my friends. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps072b196e.jpg That is pure goodness right there. :phat: :randy: :gi::b69::hot: http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psaa42cafe.jpg |

Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Not much time to work on stuff this week. My in-laws are visiting from Idaho to see us. Mostly to see the grand kids of course. I did take a little time to spray some rattle can hi-build primer on my low spots though. Figured I would try it out. It's cheap and I don't have to mix it and clean spray guns. Looks ok, but has runs cause I put it on heavy. Most will get sanded back off. Will sand with 320 when I get the time. Should be the end of body work.

Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
I have the day to do what I want, so it's cowl and tailgate time I think. ;)
On thursday we upgraded my sons ride from this... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...s/IMG_1653.jpg To this... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psc8435de4.jpg Same year, a few more miles actually, but it's in much better shape and is a better vehicle all around than his first beater. It was owned by a local mechanic the past 4 years and he did a lot of the maintenance you would expect of a high mileage car. New ball joints, CV boot, head gaskets, water pump, starter, alternator, both wiper motors, heater core, heater fan, other misc stuff. Good tires, full tank of gas, nice clean interior. And it only cost $300 more than he's selling his pickup for. He loves it and I'm happy for him. |
Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
How come it seems like spraying a few ounces of paint is a significant progress but the dozens of hours of prep it takes to get there seems almost insignificant?
Drilled holes for the tailgate seal trim piece (don't know what to call it). http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps2229513a.jpg Cleaned up and etch primed said seal trim piece... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps6d3dadcd.jpg Sprayed some primer after some wet sanding. Only pictured this part, but most of the other pieces were ready... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps9a0cc28c.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psed2aab93.jpg Then I sprayed some white sealer and then some color... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps6615c43e.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psbe27899b.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps40dc2fcb.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps32e2d61d.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps2494283a.jpg http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psab4ebab2.jpg Gonna let this stuff cure until tomorrow at least before I mess with it. My son already put a scratch in the stuff I sprayed on the back end of the bedside. Its on the inside corner and will be covered in bed liner so I didn't freak out. He scratched it when we were moving the chopped up half top into position... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps51d09c6f.jpg That is there so I can start marking the holes for the single wall top. This was a 71 tub and set up for a double wall top. I will mark the front hole from this top, then use the chrome bed rail strips to mark the rest. Wanted to do that before paint was sprayed. I have some ideas for that half top for later. If I ever get that far. So maybe tomorrow I can mount up these painted parts and work on panel fit and alignment some more. Then a wee bit more sanding and it'll be time to plunge into the exterior paint with both feet. |
Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Looking good! Most don't realize the work it takes to get to that point. Congrats!

Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Nice progress going on there.

Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Yesterday I did get the tailgate and cowl installed. They fit fine, but still have issues. First on the tailgate. The right side bracket support thingy was real stiff after painting. It was a like new part. It also was a tad to the outside, so when I closed the gate, it rubbed paint on the edge where that pivot pin is. But the gate fit good.
This is the paint from when I first tried it out on the gray primer. It will be sprayed with white sealer and repainted again with the rest of the truck. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps456a00e3.jpg The scratch... http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...psa34fffa1.jpg I will probably touch it up when the rest of the truck gets painted. I pulled on the support to get it to settle more inboard and doesn't rub now. Then I got the cowl panel in. Don't sweat the over spray. It's getting wet sanded again anyway. It will have to come off again to install the wiper/washer stuff, but I need it there for hood/fender alignment. http://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n...ps41a7d448.jpg And that alignment is all kinds of screwed up BTW. I can't close the hood now because it hits the cowl on the driver side. If I adjust the hood to the cowl it wont fit between the fenders. And they are as far over as I can go. That leaves me with pulling the tub to one side so the fenders will align with the hood. Not really hard to do (I hope) as long as I have enough give in the holes to get it where it needs to be. If not, I will have to clearance some holes. But I have to get this right before any more paint goes on. |
Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
Best of luck, the puzzle is the fun part, and the cowls are a pain. Hope it smooths out!

Slow and easy wins the race on this part. Looking good |
Re: Junkyard Jimmy Super Low Buck Build Thread
I've been aligning my blazer for the last 2 months and learned a lot. Can you move the cowl back more towards the door, I had to make the bolt hole a little larger to move mine back. Also moving the radiator support side to side to dial in the hood to fender gap and even up and down if needed. Do you have pics of the hood gaps and does the fender have a good gap near the door and rocker?
