I've had experience with Por-15 before with great results. If prepared correctly it's really durable. You can hit it with a hammer and it doesn't chip. You can paint it with a brush, and dries like you sprayed it on. Like you said it's not cheap. I have to check out Zero-Rust to see if it's as durable. What do you guys know?

We were there not too long ago with my woman's '65. Luckily there wasn't too much rust on the chassis, we shot it with Rustoleum semi-gloss black paint...:chevy:

Thanks Joe!!!

that's a good looking frame!!

Excerpt from their web-site
Quote:

Zero Rust - A VOC Compliant Phenolic Alkyd Primer Coating:

ZeroRust is a direct metal phenolic modified alkyd rust and corrosion control a coating, which puts down an impermeable rust proofing barrier at the steel level. ZeroRust has two superior traits (1) it provides maximum adhesion to steel or maximum rust prevention - this is called chemical affinity. (2) Its dielectric ability is extraordinary - steel is isolated from the electrolysis process, which converts steel to rust. (In laymen's terms, this rust prevention starves the oxygen from the substrate, preventing oxidation.) Zero Rust makes an excellent Original Equipment Manufacturer “OEM” coating and is routinely used on new trailers, new structural steel, new oilfield wellheads & manifolds, new mining equipment, new pump & manifold systems, new power generation skids and new tanks. Zero Rust can give your products the rust protection and prevent rust from appearing again.

ZeroRust Performance:
Continued refinement of the Zero Rust formula has netted ASTM-B117 salt spray testing results exceeding 2000 hours at 3.5 mils dry film thickness (d.f.t.). This equates to 600 hours per dry mil, which was previously unheard of in an air-dry system. The Zero-Rust rust protection performance exceeds that of commonly used red oxide, DTM Acrylics, water-borne alkyds and epoxies on these types of surfaces. Zero-Rust rust protection performance has been confirmed by industrial, commercial and marine industry. Black and Red Oxide Zero-Rust are recommended as the primers for corrosive services -- including marine, coastal and industrial surfaces. The effectiveness of Zero-Rust on bare steel surfaces is optimized at 2.5 to 3.0 mils d.f.t. over profile. Rule of thumb: Zero-Rust should provide five years of rust protection for every a mil d.f.t. With the addition of a topcoat or a thicker film of Zero-Rust to take the ultraviolet rays, sealing protection can easily double.

I have heard good things about it.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

I have a gallon of the black Zero-Rust that I plan to use on the frame. I also bought 6 cans of the red oxide to use in smaller, hard to reach areas so I would have an opposing color to make sure I had good coverage with the black.

If I ever get to the frame, I'll let you know how it turns out. (You'll probably beat me to that point though.)

It looks good, and I like that it comes in colors. I wonder how it will resist road chips compared to Por-15.

I heard that.

Joe, nice progress.:metal:

You remember our discussion on the durability of my painted frame? You said your truck will be on some dirt roads if I remember correctly. If your can hit por15 with a hammer and it won't chip, I think I know what my choice would be. Good luck with your decision.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

I'm thinking of painting the frame with the Zero-Rust because it comes in colors, and the suspension parts with the black Por-15. That's what will chip the most. Plus I already have a quart of the Por-15.

i do recall that conversation;)
It is my understanding that the Zero-Rust is as durable as POR......dunno

I used the POR15 and it withstood a Bobcat blade without scraping through to the bare metal.

i used por15 on a 66 short fleet i was working on back in 94.i brushed it on the inner rockers, inside of the rockers before welding them on and inside of the new cab corners.i expect it to outlast me probably, but i sold the truck in 95 and don't know what it looks like now.

That's a good idea.

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

Without going on a Sales Pitch for Por15. My plan was to paint anything and everything under the truck that is subject to boucing rocks and road salt. As well the bottoms of the cab, inner fender/exterior fender, bed supports and frame. I'm sure Rust Bullet and all the others would work as well, but thats my plan for now. ;)

I didn't take pictures, but when I tried to bend the hairs on a brush after it sat over night the handle snapped on the brush before I could bend a brissel. Keep in mind the temp was 70 or so degrees so it had a good chance to harden. It would take longer to harden if it was cooler. I've never powder coated or sprayed automotive paint so I don't know if I would of had the same result. :smoke:

Just don't get that stuff on you. It does not come off easily.

That would make a cool custom Ice Cream Truck. Something like this one. But more hot rod type not low rider.

:smoke: Always thought one of those would make a very unique, heavy-duty camper of some sort. Neat old school design that might be cool with some tinted boat windows. At least the sides and roof wouldn't disintegrate like the cheapy tin motor homes.

;)

Re: Our '66 Short Fleet Build

I called Zero Rust today. They won't even sell to me because I live in California. He told me it is like Por-15 and is chip resistant, and can be painted on with a brush. You must prepare it correctly, and it needs 2 coats. I tried to order it through the web site, and it went through. The web site said nothing about California not being able to order it. I paid through Pay Pal. We'll see what happens???
