Speaking of CHiPs, the one episode I remember best was the domestic disturbance one where the wife was out on the lawn and had set her soon to be ex-husbands Trans Am on fire. I recall Ponch got the car for like $50.... Quote:

I also picked up an engine balancer to make pulling the motor back out a lot easier. Also today, in keeping with my wiring and dash extension plans, I picked up the sound system. I admit I bit the quality versus price bullet this time. I stood in WalMart for almost an hour just staring at the stereo display playing with the demos and listening to the speakers. My Tempest has $2,200.00 of sound in it but I have to keep in mind that this is a small truck cabin compared to the land yacht convertible the Pontiac is and I will be sitting in and on the speakers in this build. The acoutics are going to be 180 degrees of difference from my Tempest. Attachment 1012971 These next two are just quick shots of the ceiling, and how the progress is, well, progressing ..... Well old business first...
I did a mount for my cyclops light but I didnt really like it. I goofed it up and the light mounted up side down to what I wanted, then it turned out to be too shallow for the light housing. I really did not want to cut any more than totally neccessary so I re-did it. This is what it came out as. I also added amber bulbs to it for the left and right turn signals. Attachment 1014463 Attachment 1014464 Flips you asked for a dead on side shot to check angles, I think this should cover that question Heheheh. Attachment 1014469 If anyone is interested, I will post next on how I made the gasket that is between the mount and the cab. Attachment 1014470 |

Since I did not take any photos while I was actually doing this, I have recreated the process here for FYI purposes.
Like many of us I tend to get on a roll, focused on what I am doing, having fun and not only do I miss the photo ops--- but dinner sometimes too !! For a water proof gasket that will follow an edge on flat surface, or be pancaked down like a plate but not torqued too hard this is what you can do. For this application I used 1/4" or 3/8" vacuum line and split it down one side. I suppose you could use larger hose for larger applications as needed; I just have not needed to yet. As some of you know every thing is spooled in a standard direction that is why it is easier to loop a hose or extention cord left handed than it is right handed, and why they twist up when you dont. So I try to cut the hose on the inside of its natural curve so it will follow the corners more easily. Attachment 1014471 then you run a bead of form-a-gasket on the inside. Here I am using the Permatex stuff I used for my water pump. Attachment 1014472 Then carefully feed it onto the edge you are working on. Be sure to tape it down every inch or two, as the silicon will make it as slippery as buttered snot and you will be mad and messy.... Attachment 1014473 Then it is just a matter of working it on all the way around. If by some chance you did not measure right, or the line was stretched when you cut it and you come up 1/8 or 1/4" short with a gap, dont dispair. You can just fill that space with the gasket sealer. I ran tape over my gap filler so it would have the same contour as the rest of the gasket. Attachment 1014474 Put it aside and work on something else for a day or two while that sets up. Impatience is my worst enemy. And that is it, easy peasy. |

Yesterday I decided it was time to face the tranny access door issue again.
My first attempt was off to a good start, but I got ahead of myself and physics kicked my butt on it. So I tried again. There is just something that is too cool about taking a flat square of sheet metal, and making something out of it that really gets me going...how weird is that? Attachment 1014481 Here it is installed: I may go with some beefier fastners, I snapped the heads off two of them installing it for the second time. Attachment 1014482 Since the my dome light shared a hole with the cyclops light on the outside, I decided I would mess with both of these at the same time. So here I got the dome light installed as well. I made the mount for this so it would house my spot tweeter speakers. This dome light is from 69-71 Caddillacs, Caprice, and probably a few more GM models. This particular one came out of an Eldorado. I like the map reading lamps is why I grabbed it and added it to my build. Installed: Attachment 1014483 Just the dome light, and dont mind my light lens, I made it out of a milk jug. Attachment 1014490 Just the map lights: Attachment 1014491 I have started on my dash extension console side panels, after I get that all mocked up, it will be time to weld it in. |
Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....
:gi:You come up with some of the neatest ideas. I may have to steal a few.

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....
Cool ideas! Gotta watch this!

Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....
Like all the mods so far. Have them bookmarked,,,,, Plannin on comming back at a future time to ssstealll them for my truck.
I do have to ask though.............. Is there a seal or gasket around the tranny inspection cover to prevent leakage? I might have just overlooked that bit of info. Since Im at it............Is there a vid on the subject matter?:D |
Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....
thanks for the side shot, looks great and i really like the dome light, who would have guessed a milk jug, great thinking.

I know about the bookmarking, I do that, and save a lot of build photos from different projects going on here!! I am not 100% done with that tranny access cover... after I pull the engine back out, I am going to mark the cover from the underside and weld in baffles that will help prevent water intrusion. I will also be making a gasket for that, either a snug up with rubber hose, or some sort of flat gasket with bicycle inner tube. Either way, it will be waterproof !! More to follow on that. Quote:
I also have to confess that the angles of the cyclops light, and the mount I made were purely accidental in how they countered each other so effectively. I clearly recall mounting it up, and then taking the photo, and after posting the photo saying to myself "wow, that really looks like it was made for that..." Got my HURST C-shifter in yesterday !! Gonna get that tranny mocked up with the shifter and cut the hump before I pull the engine back out this weekend. Hooray for progress !! :metal: |
Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....
Wow the truck is coming along awesome. Just got caught up on your thread. Just got back to town. Need to get started back on mine. Keep up the great work.

Good luck with that down there :smoke: ******************************************************** So this week my shifter handle arrived and I was like ---- Yay !!! Attachment 1016322 Then today I mocked it up to cut the tranny hump and access door, and decided to toss in the seat too, you know just to be sure. Then I was like ------- bummer !!! This is with the shifter in 1st gear..... Le'Sigh.... Attachment 1016323 I always knew this may be an issue so I made sure to remember the adaption that Markb did with his build here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=444502&page=2 with this adapter plate he made, Attachment 1016324 Attachment 1016325 So tomorrow before I yank the engine and tranny this weekend I am going to make one of those and ensure it clears all tolerances because there have been a lot of parts to this project that have been held up or set aside waiting for the transmission and shifter considerations. I hope each and eveyone had a wonderful day, Happy Thanksgiving to all those so inclined to celebrate it. Time for dinner here !! |
Re: Not Another Rebuild Thread....
Can you heat up the handle and bend it forward?
