Interesting to see lock ring wheels still being used on a 1990.

I feel the same way.
It's unfathomable that at a time when you could no longer buy a carbureted vehicle brand new, but we still sold vehicles with split rims......

your mixing terms that dont mean the same .

split rim = the death rim and 2 half's twist and pop apart .

lock ring is just this a ring drops in to a full ring and locks to the main rim body .

i never got to play with true split rims but di lots and lots of lock ring and never had a problem .

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

so lock rings are not nearly s dangerous as split rims? I did not know that. I thought lock rings were just "a little safer", not "night and day". Thanks for the clarification.

biggest thing with them i was shown was CLEAN the rim grove were it sits as clean of rust and dirt and paint as possible . then air up the tire 10-20 psi or until the tire pushes up the ring and starts to lock in the lock ring . then take a 3-4 lb hammer and tap the lock ring to make sure its seated good . then air it up a bit more and recheck seat . if good fill it up .

also best to do this in a cage if you can like any big truck tire or super high psi setup should be .

oh ya also make sure NOT to mix up the rings and locks . some can be a bit different in shape and not lock in right .

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

I agree with you sweetk30, the lock ring wheels were considered safe by the industry and still being used in the 90's. I guess it boils down to economics, they require more skilled labor, which means more expensive to deal with vs. a solid rim which is simple and requires less skill. IMO, it was favored in heavy duty extreme work vs. flat highway hauling work. I understand all the advantages of the solid rims and radials, but, I'm beginning to miss the look of a heavy duty bias ply tire on a lock ring wheel, not only on big rigs, but on pre mid 70's 3/4 and 1 ton pickups.

With no hood emblems, I was first thinking Canadian, unless someone took them off. Strange that it has a 6500 front bumper, but is only a 5000. Also never remember "Diesel" under the series emblem. Still could be Canadian. Cool truck though. I also like the Tandem as well as the 2 Sticks. Also has Air Brakes.

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

Saw this also 5000 tandem also, not too far from me either. I'd have to go back to a diesel though, regardless of the cheap gas prices now, haha
Maybe 6V92-71-53? Mmmm. This would surely grant me divorce papers

That thing is cool. I too, would have to go to a Detroit Diesel.

C10 - C90 Bill 04-04-2020 02:17 PM

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

A 6-71 would be nice.

GMC should of had Detroits in them anyway back then.

Funny, Chevy did with a 4-53.

GMC did though in the Model B.

6-71 would be nice, but figured a V would be easier install without firewall modification. Got an emblem if you want to go back to a Toroflow,...Hahaha

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

They did put 6-71's in the B though, as well as 702 V-12's. That would be interesting to compare firewalls between the B and C.

B models look to have a higher cab mounting?, I guess a lot of engine sits lower in frame?, You ever been inside one Bill?

C10 - C90 Bill 04-04-2020 05:10 PM

Re: The Ulitmate Craigslist find thread

Right, the B is definitely higher and that could be the reason why they would fit better. I've might have peeked inside one or two through the years, but never drove one or sat in one. I do remember a large dog house and seem to remember the shifter being further back similar to where a shifter is located on a 9500 (short hood) with a 6-71.

The best one I can remember was in a junk yard. It was a B 7500. Had a 6-71 and and I believe a 10-Speed Road Ranger. Pretty much like your picture above. It was impressive.

States Auto Trans, but I don't know why. It has a Clutch Pedal, Shifter and what looks like a 2-Speed Rear. Cool Truck. Also has Air Brakes. Wish it was closer.
