Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Rian,
I love it! I remember the P100's with a mark 4/5 front sheet metal but I've never seen a pick up with a mark 3 front end. My first car was a mark 3, 2.0 XL (oh nostalgia....it's not what it used to be) |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Same for me, never seen a Mk3 pickup, maybe we are just too young :two:

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
FREEEEEE IS GOOD !!
Well, that's my opinion. I popped into the scrap yard on the way home tonight to show the guys Hannah's burner pics. So Glen took me into a shed and said he had seen something I may like and put it aside. And yes, I could have it of nothing. So it will be needing a new home soon. Three wheeled, rear pivot steering trike, what's not to like?? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps7wbgwlem.jpg While in the shed I asked if hey ever saw vertical compressors like in the States, and he said no, but they had one that was missing a wheel and worked fine, would I be interested? I asked how much and he said "what do you want to pay?" So I offered £10.00 which was probably double what they would want, but I often get bits of metal and stuff for nothing there, so fair is fair. Deal done. Brought it home, cleaned it up and tested it, perfect. Plan is to see over the weekend if I can move the head unit and fit it on top of the cylinder and turn it into a vertical compressor and then fit it into the replica petrol pump I built last year. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psi7rg9pb8.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps57bbe133.jpg Other side...... http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0c522e11.jpg While out at work today, I took a 1/2 mile detour to pick up the biscuit jointer I bought on Monday evening off EBay. Paid £35.00 for it but renting would be £26.00 per day. Now I can use it for making up the load bed of he truck from the oak strips I previously cleaned up and saved for this job. The machine was "used" but it looked like new to me. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psb3txjlam.jpg Remember this lot?? http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psab2efcc7.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps3a4d1f65.jpg Looking forward to trying it out. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Wow ,you find the coolest stuff for the best price of anyone I have ever seen. I love the truck you are thinking about buying as well as the 3 wheeler .The fire pit turned out great too ,I may have to build one of those someday .I cant wait to see the end results from that new jointer .Oh I almost forgot ,CONGRATS on the new job.

The new job will be a lot tougher than the one I do now, but I am looking forward to the challenge. My eyes are always open for stuff. Here is a nice Wiki reference to P100/Cortina pickups. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_P100 Useful in understanding these little Frankensteins of the automotive world. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
In my days as a mechanic for the local Ford dealership I used to PDI the P100's. Hardest job was getting the chains cut off where they had been lashed down on the ships...
You do know a 302 bolts straight in... P. :D |

Already in my head, though I do love a standard car too, so it is parked at the back of my head. Take a look here, speaking of 302's http://www.markthreeownersclub.com/BOBBY.html This one is in Scotland. I have a friend in South Africa who will be going out to take a look for me next week, if it has not sold, and hopefully getting better photos all round. He is much easier pleased than me, but still got to be cheaper than flying out there. If I were to buy it, there is still the cost of importing and registering here to contend with. PS. Found these of the one in Scotland...... http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psrh4muogr.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pshnkapuy1.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psv1ewnjgw.jpg Do like the simplicity of the front end. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psg1cntalt.jpg |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
congrats on the new job. bigger check is cool too but i hope it won't require too much additional time. we need some rian time creating more thingamabobs and whatya-call-its. the stuff we would never think to do but then wonder how we did without one.
you are proof, my friend, that we can't have too much fun. |

Had a 302 in my Mk1 Capri 'back in the day'... Was quite entertaining...
Would be a good addition to the fleet, whereabouts in SA is it? One of my many brother in laws would be available to give it he once over if it is in the Cape and you wanted a second opinion. He is not easily pleased.... P. :D |

The new job will take a lot more time, but it will make my heart a lot happier. The extra Benjamin's will go toward filling the hole the last four years created in my savings pot as I do not usually touch the salary, only bonuses and money generated elsewhere goes into the truck pot. I will continue to build thingamabobs and whatchamacallits as they allow me thinking time and and sometimes are practice for other jobs. Quote:

Door check modification link
I add this in this way as an entry, so we can all find the thread again. CLICKY LINKY http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=668783 There is also this great write up by Van Pershing on fitting them. http://www.persh.org/pickup/DoorChecks.htm Thanks to Jay "Lugnutz65" for documenting a great modification on the rubber stoppered items in the thread. I will be going down that route for my door checks. I am constantly amazed at how this truck makes me smile, and challenges the way I think and do things. How little wins result in big grins on my face and in my soul. We are fortunate to have found these trucks to spend time (and money) on. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
KiwiKev, hotrod builder extraordinaire built one of these a few years ago, I wanted one as well......
CHECK HIS GARAGE THREAD HERE: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=64560 What I will be aiming for. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pssep7lvel.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps8ukbw3kx.jpg Motivated by friend Clem in Fayetteville, Arkansas I thought I would show this mini-build as well in case someone wanted to copy it. So I started to collect bits and pieces as time went on. Some bits found, some donated and some purchased, the most expensive by memory was £3.00 for the Lion no2 vice. The pipe vice was 50p at a bootfair last year, and the little vice found at the tip. The small anvil made of a bit of mini railway line. There is also a larger bit of rail line for hammering on. Truck brake drum was donated free by a local truck service station and the piece of RSJ found by friend Woodsie in a skip. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psgnlgsh5p.jpg So I started off by just cleaning up the bits that will be added to the tool post (no idea what it should be called) http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps1s09igom.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psiqlwzj0b.jpg No2 Lion vice cleaned up, just the oil and dirt at this point. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psq1tnghux.jpg My favourite is this 50p pipe vice. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps2ubxhagz.jpg Next up I need to plan what goes where and to keep it functionally balanced. More after the weekend if you are interested. |

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
I have been experiencing insomnia for some time.
This morning was noting new, so after surfing the web for a few hours, in bed on the iPad, it was up, feed cats, myself and down to the garage to play quietly as Nicola had threatened me with some seriously debilitating injuries if I were to cut and grind at 6am. So 6.30 is not 6.00 or is it? Anyway, I decided to keep the garage door shut and started by making a long nosed mini Anvil from the one I made a few years ago. It works fine, but I also realised that sometimes you need to shove stuff like pipe deeper over a point to work it. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps5rlxwih1.jpg Later I opened up the garage and decided to start using one of the quiet tools so that I would not wake up the neighbourhood. I had just started when I felt a hand on my shoulder........ Ooooopppsss.....!!! Well, not that bad, Nicola wanted to get to the shops early so got up, showered while I was tiptoeing around the garage and came to see if I wanted a cuppa tea. So I made her take a pic of the quiet tool. Compressor running inside the garage, and plasma cutter outside. This is a bit quicker, albeit rougher than a 9" grinder. Cutting the post to size, I went for 780mm although the standard size should be around 750mm for a table top to mount stuff onto. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pscpnmcftg.jpg Next up, plate steel for the base and table. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
I keep thinking I need a plasma cutter too, but not sure how much I'd use it? what's the max thickness it will cut?

You must have a REAL Good cutter. My Miller Plasma cutter is only good for sheet metal. It would NOT cut 11 gauge sheet when I was doing a BBQ couple years ago.

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
just a suggestion. i've used semi truck brake drums before for bases on grinder's and shrinker/stretchers and what i found out is that you need to weld the drum to a big truck flywheel on the bottom. the additional weight will make a big difference. 2¢... keep going on bro... lookin' good.

I am hoping that the 100kg invested in this will be enough. If you look at the base that I welded on, you will see a solitary sad bolt screwed in as well. It is there as a preventative measure...... If the stand is not stable enough for things like hacksaw and filing, then I will add in a "foot pedal" on which my left foot can rest to steady it. I think the weight is fine at 100kg but the base is small, so may pivot if used. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Raining here since 04.00 which meant no bootfair, this is two weeks running now we had weekend rain...... So I am suffering with a bit of withdrawal symptoms.
Went down to the garage at 06.00 to move the stand indoors and dry it, as I want to clean up the brake drum and RSJ a bit with a flap wheel before getting some old grey marine paint I still have from when I painted out the rear of the '63 Transit van a few years ago. I had thought of painting everything one colour originally, but the also thought about it and had it pointed out to me that they had all "earned their stripes" over time and deserved to keep their original paint. When I did the little anvil's screw down holes I decided to also drill a pair of holes into the top aspect of it, one large and one small for those times when you need to bend and whack something very squarely. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psjvr3befp.jpg I had been asked by "1/2 Cup" in Australia what I thought the stand weighed. Without tools attached it is just over 82 or in old English 12 Stone 8 The tools weigh another 18kg or 2 stone 11 So the total weight is 100kg or 15 stone 5 in English. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pslfr7svu1.jpg Heavy bloody thing I tell you, even rolling it about without the tools attached. Decided that I will flap wheel the scabby rust of the base and post followed by some Hammerite. |

LOL.... I was hoping nobody would notice. Never one to leave Well, Alone..... I found some Poo Brown Hammerite this afternoon and after grinding the whole stand clean with a pair of flap wheels, I proceeded to brown it up. Kept the two plates Hammerite grey and some detail around the base and up the RSJ edges. Will add the tools tomorrow, then Job Done! http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps5kdy6iss.jpg Perfect way to spend some bank holiday weekend time.. |

For guys from the UK who may read on here, thought I would copy and paste.
I was given two of these, taken out of a Peugeot 807 people carrier. Kept one, offered one to mate Martin as he wanted to convert his C10 truck to bucket seats with a folder in the centre. Free to collector, Rochester, Kent. It is 18 inches wide. Fold down the back and you have a table with cup holders. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfndkd1pi.jpg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psoy0vanfv.jpg Please PM if you want it. First PM gets it. No messers please. Mrs Boss wants it out the house, or else it's pavement time. ALSO........ Free to collector. I bought this at the weekend for my mate, but he does not want it. Free to collector http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...pskx7issg2.jpg Please PM. First PM gets it. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
In this day and age religion is often frowned upon, but I have met some of the most amazing people from various religions over time.
From Buddhists to Sikhs, through Muslims and Christians and everything inbetween, there are many good people out there and if you do not allow yourself to be swayed by petulant religious opinion, the world is an awesome place with the odd idiot inbetween trying to make it rubbish for others. I have had these crucifixes running around in my head for a long time. Today at the one bootfair, I bought a handful of carpenters nails for 50p though the seller had agreed to 20p, I did not have the heart to take the change. Came home and welded these up for my friend Ta2Don in Arkansas to stick in his Tattoo shop. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0mszb28s.jpg A little bit of prep, some quick mig welding and we have three crosses. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psa7rbrevp.jpg Followed by some finishing off on the linisher in the woodwork shed, mounted on a bit of old fence post I still have not figured out what to do with....... For those of the Christian faith, the story should be fairly apparent. Job done. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psr3ghb9nt.jpg Will get these to Don when we go over on this Road trip in October http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=653025 Definitely looking forward to it. |

Been a bit busy getting ready for my job change the last few weeks, finish the current job on Friday, new job Tuesday. In the industry I am in, it is very academically driven, and all new knowledge needs to be learned and tests/exams have a non negotiable 85% pass rate. So just when I thought I would spend some time on the truck while on holiday before leaving my current job, the training files etc got here........ Need I say more? Anyway, those that know the truck will recall that I need to replace my door check straps as the passenger door is very knackered after at least two previous contacts with the front fender edge. I already had the repair panels for the speaker holes in both doors, and the bad crease on the outside of the PS door but still needed to buy some Jeep Cherokee door check straps. In stepped a hero from South Carolina and offered me his spare set, including the rubber grommets already prepped and ready to fit, along with some door pins as well. Nicola and I went away for 5 days to the UK's Jurassic Coast to search for fossils and just spend some time together as the rest of this year will be rough from a job point of view, and of course I am off to the USA in October on a road trip with mate Martin. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psoqvjlk5r.jpg Many roads signed like this, no mobile or internet, no Starbucks or McDonalds. Refreshing. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps9ldwm226.jpg Our fossil finds. 170million years old. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psywbxguri.jpg So today I went to the Post Office to collect a parcel........ Came home, opened it and found these in it. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psbx9w9eoc.jpg Thank you very much friend, these will be saving me a lot of pain in future. On Saturday I am off to go look at a passenger door off a '64 as well, which has no speaker hole, and seems to be crease free, though not perfect with a bit of ruse, and dents on the bottom edge, at £200.00, the price the seller is asking is more than I would like to pay, but if you do the maths and include all the welding and potential warping on my door, it kind of makes sense to buy this door. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psuyacoki3.jpg Seems Martin may have a complete cab for his truck as well, again not cheap, but less pain than patching his rusted cab, which is recoverable, but tipped in favour of the replacement unit. |
