Skinny...if you're cutting down an original wheel, please post pics and pointer if you have any. I'm thinking of cutting a deluxe wheel down a couple of inches. Your truck is really looking good too!

Nothing to add.

Just enjoying it all.

Love the shop pic.

Modernize your vintage steering wheel. 17" pencil-thin to 14.5" 1" thick.

First, make a hoop. I took a length of 1" tubing and bent it around the drop center of an old Cavalier wheel (perfect diameter to get 14.5"):

Cut where they overlap with a cutting disc on your angle grinder:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...08-672x377.png

Clamp in a vice and weld together:

Cut and shape to fit:

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...56-672x378.png

Tack in place (I used a stack of metal to get the right height, and square):

https://www.gwellwood.com/wordpress/...00-672x376.png

Fill the voids (I used JB Weld's Plastic Putty, and I also chased and filled the age-cracks):

Start mixing primer:

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

A bit of a detour from the truck.

SkinnyKid1 just got his license, and then ten days into it, he "nerfed" a curb (and by "nerfed" I think he means "did you even lift, bro?")

So I'm making him do ALL the work (except welding), AND he has to walk the 75 minute trip to school until the car is road worthy again. And SkinnyKid2 has to walk as well, which helps kid1 see the farther-reaching impact of poor decision.

So far, he's into it for a control, a ball joint, and a pair of struts.

Today I had him cut off the bent lip as well as a good lip off another wheel, and I welded them together.

Well i am sorry for him, BUT happy that your teaching real life things, actions have consequences and they can suck alot.

A common thread in conversation over the last year has been "every decision has a price; good decision or bad decision, there is always a price."

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

We have all learned lessons from actions, whether good or not so good, is part of development. If the rim is so rare, that you have taken this route?
Which looks great, we rarely do it.

SkinnyG 09-26-2022 10:54 PM

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

The rim is a 15x6.5, which is really uncommon (most steelies are 15x5.5). On one hand, I could make him source one, and it'd probably only be found brand new at $120CDN plus $50 shipping and it won't match the other three, or on the other hand I can make him put some sweat into it and I weld it. Labour is a good teaching tool.

My first car was a reward when I left school (in South Africa you get a learners license aged 17 and need to be supervised by a qualified driver at all times) then at 18 you can do your test and drive any power car under 3 tons.

My dad told me all about taking responsibility and exactly what you just said before handing me the keys.

The lesson has paid off over the years and I have repeated is a few times to youngsters.

You are too kind.

I just really like building.

That, and I'm really cheap. Well, frugal.

Fabricating bumper brackets. Yes, I know you can buy them, but I wanted to make sure everything was exactly where I wanted it to be.

.... and that Sir is what is so cool to watch you do! You help others like myself with our own projects and your ideas are just great! I think that sometimes you guys whom post great ideas (SCOTI just to name another) and suggestions do not get the credit you are so deserving of and I just want to make sure that you and others like you get a little thank you here and there.

To fit the barrel engine cover closer, I need to move the evap solenoid. Two brackets:

Forgot to photo the second bracket, but here they are in situ and connected:

I think I like the wheels. Will they have hub caps?

SkinnyG 12-11-2022 01:56 AM

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

I altered the photograph to best match what I actually see in person.

I "think" I like the wheels too. Maybe not 100%, but this is what it's going to be for a while.

I'm thinking chrome Spider Caps.

Re: SkinnyG's '61 Apache

Grill supports got painted in semi-gloss polyurethane, and the grill got properly mounted with 3/16" aluminum rivets and rivet washers.

Bumper also got mounted with stainless carriage bolts I had blasted and shot in polyurethane back when I did the steering wheel.

Not shown, I have door seals installed. Working on wiper motor mounting.
