Looks like your doing a great job. That gap you are referring to is where the wires will lay. The flange is where the weatherstrip attaches. I don't have a good pic of it being done showing the gap. Here is mine before surgery. You can see a wire running thru there and the gap. The spot weld go down in that area onto top of the inner rocker. I guess I should have took some better pix.:lol:

Ya'll ever start on a project and half way thru it you ask yourself what the hell was I thinking? :lol: Well tonight was a perfect example for me. I went out with the full intentions of getting the column done so I can get it ready for paint. I did get the upper nuts tacked in place. i then took the column out to work on the nuetral safety switch. My thinking was I could duplicate the openings, so that is what proceeded to do.

I was taking step by step pix to share with ya'll. Once I got to this point is when it hit me..........That's stupid you dumb A$$. My thinking is I can cut out a square around the original location and move it up the column. The piece I cut out can fill the hole where the original one was. It will be alot cleaner and will allow me more access to the inner shaft so I can cut it as well. I will weld the piece I cut out tonight back in and start over. Don't ya'll think that would be better?:smoke:

Good idea Allan, but what do you have to do to the inner shaft make the switch work? Isn't there an easier way? You got me thinking now.

I've seen 2 mishaps over the years due to that. It's not worth the risk of killing someone.

After I got my measurements and a plan this is what happened. I didn't take pix of the cut I made on the inner tube where the switch is activated. It looks almost like the original hole just in a different location.

And there is continuity in park. I tacked everything in place and checked with a meter before I weld everything up.

I get it....sorry dude. I see whats up now; thats slick. Was the switch interfering with something? Your mount is clean too. My column installed by the PO has a cobbled up mount combined of the late(?) 70's column mount and the original. The column is also too short.

I slid the column down (forward) 2". That put the nuetral safety in the firewall. There is a pic on the previous page. No need to be sorry.;) Thanks.

The slot on the inner cylinder wasnt registering to me. Probably because I havent torn apart a column before. I knew it worked mechanically.

Man I'm tired, just went through the whole thread again to find how you welded the rocker to the floor. I noticed you made holes in the new rocker. Did you use a spot weld bit? Every time I go through your thread I find something new I learned. This is like my third time I have gone through it.

Hopefully I have cleared up a mystery for you.;)

I used a spot weld bit to drill the holes on top of the outer rocker where it lays on the inner rocker. Maybe I should go back thru my own build . I might learn something or see something I forgot to take care of. ;)

Had a little time to shave the key hole and fill today. The pix are pretty much self explanatory.

I made the cut with a thin cutoff wheel and cleaner up with a grinder. (It's aluminum)

Put a piece of tape to plug the hole for the next step.

This stuff is great for bonding panels and have used it in some other circumstances, so why not try it here.

It is slow to dry. It needs at least 4 hours at 70 degrees, 24 to fully cure. Once cured it can be dressed down and maybe wiped with a thin coat of filler if needed.

Not a whole lot going on here, just enjoying the beautiful weather. As most know I picked up another truck for the hood. I've got the rest of the truck in the classified section with a choice of one of my other 2 hoods. I've kind of got out of the groove. Trying to get back in the saddle. I think we have all been there. You decide to take a day or 2 off then before you know it it is a week later.

Alan, thanks for the in-depth photos and detail of what you’re doing. This effort will no doubt save many tears for a lot of folks later on and is a great example of why this forum is so important.

I hear you on the taking a break. Got cold her so I took a break for a month or two. Then right when I started getting excited it Snows for two days in the beginning of March. What gives?

At least ya'll got some snow. I live 60 miles North of Atlanta. We didn't even get a flake. Atlanta got 2-4". It won't be long and we will be complaining about the heat.:lol:
