Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
So, I swerved by HB Transmission Friday afternoon to see if they’d auctioned off my truck, or, if it had been stolen again. The helper guy was the only one there - washing his truck before he closed the shop down and he was kind enough to let me walk under my truck, up on the rack.
I was truly amazed. If this thing might possibly work half-as-well as it looks, I’m going to be a happy camper. I instructed (via my 3-page list) them to go through my brake system (because I knew it was becoming dangerous) and what they did, along with the drive-line work and rear end rebuild, makes those units look like they did on the factory assembly line! I’m going to leave this sleeping dog alone and not harass the owners over taking so long. The pile of parts that came off the under-carriage of that truck were truly scary - including the busted front springs. (And here I thought it was by gigantic caboose that was causing my C10 to lean toward the front-left corner.) Mac. :chevy: |
Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Sounds good Mac. Was the spring busted at exactly 1 coil?

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Both of mine were busted at exactly 1 coil. I'm gonna put mine back in to help lower the front. I just wondered if it was just the nature of the beast or mine was just a freak deal.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Must be a basic design / manufacturing flaw. Every time I'd hit a good bump it sounded like a badger in heat under there.

never heard a badger in heat before. I think that you should get that recorded on video so that we can identify it when we hit a bump. we didn't even get a picture. ron |

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins
Swerved by the shop after work on Friday. Owner and two mechanics were working on The Tan - installing new choke cable assembly. They're close. Might get a call this afternoon to let me know what day this week to pick her up.

Re: The 283 Rebuild Begins

Got the zoom for those under-hood and chassis shots, and it's got a nice little flip-up fill flash. The lady at the Wal-Mart processing desk is going to be heartbroken. ;) |

Shop called and said The Tan has "a flat spot" between idle and 1,000 rpm. He's confused about the vacuum advance hose going to the HEI. The 2-barrel Rochester has a small tube coming out at the lower-front (passenger side) of the body and I told my guy that's where I though it hooks up. His carburetor guy is coming over to assist.
