I put it back in Friday afternoon after work, and it only took about 2 hours working all-by-myself before I was driving it! I put about 30 miles on it before it started raining for the weekend. LOL! Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
Well, I haven't done much posting lately, but I have been more than busy!
The '66 has ate yet another transmission, and now the builder is claiming abuse....really??? I depressed the throttle @ 55mph to pass a car and the trans downshifted to third...when it returned to O.D. it squawked the rear tires...and then there was nothing... Really? This is a 4L60E with all-new internals, including a 5 gear planetary, an a beast sun-shell and a 2100 stall converter among other things, behind what might be a 450hp small block at tops. I watch people do this **** all day long at US131 Dragway without problems! WTH? Other than that, the Trailblazer SS Spun some rod bearings, instigating a total rebuild...including a PCM of NC Fury cam with Brian Tooley valve springs, and Ti retainers. Also, a relocated Oil pump pick-up to aid against starvation on launch, & Cold-Air-Intake with LS7 MAF sensor. All of this deserved a tune @ BAKER engineering, to make things really work nicely!....This thing flies!!! My dad & I had taken the time this past week to attend the Day3 portion of HOTROD Dragweek, where I had the opportunity to meet Brian Doisher. I was VERY far from disappointed with how this turned out!!!! It is no surprise that Brian's success stems from his firm down to earth beliefs, and the fact that he is a true conversationalist.....Very hard not to like this guy!!! Here is a pic of his car, if you are not familiar with who I am speaking of... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/YoA203.jpg I laso got a shot of the "Worlds Fastest Street Car 2016" along with my truck just chillin in the background!...So weird that he wanted to park near me! LOL!..Honestly, I parked there hours before he ever arrived! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...921/64QDui.jpg None other than Jeff Luntz working on the car, getting ready to whip some a$$! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/zYePoZ.jpg |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
I totally realize that I spelled Jeff Lutz's name wrong!
A very good friend of mine has the last name of Lantz, and I must have combined them somehow in my mind...I tried to edit, but couldn't. |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
Been following the trans saga on fb... :thud: Feel for ya!!!

Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
On a brighter side of things, I went to a local show this morning, and ended up winning the trophy for the category of "Sickest Ride" ...This was a judged event. Also, over the Labor Day weekend, I went to a "Cars for Cancer" show which had over 750 cars, and placed #3 of the Top-Ten!...I just need to work out all of the bugs...
http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/70jB7l.jpg And the trophy... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/PRvcaY.jpg |

I cannot begin to explain how nice this truck rides, drives, and runs.....almost all of the time, and in that order! I love this thing, but I am still struggling with dependability! Quote:
I appreciate that a lot! Sometimes it is not quite as attractive to me... While trying to work out all of the glitches... |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
Hi Mike
Your PM capacity is exceeded I only landed in Detroit, then flew to St Louis. |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
It has been a while since I have posted any updates, but I really wanted to wish everyone here on the forum a Merry Christmas, and extremely Happy New-Year!!!!
Cheers Everyone! |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
Hmmmm, Look what followed me home!
I think that it will be O.K. after I buff it out! LOL! Surprisingly, it drives out well! This could be the start of an LS-Swap for "Old Blue". After realizing the effects that some fairly simple mods had on the TBSS, I am thinking that I may slowly work-over this LS, and swap it into the '66!!! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/jURuip.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/j1oKcf.jpg http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/Fdojr9.jpg |

Nice man. Is that the 6.0 in that or the 5.3.

Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
The Tahoe that is pictured has the 5.3, but my TBSS has the 6 litre....
I am thinking about doing a top-end on the 5.3, some good heads, cam & Intake changes...Among other things... |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
Toss it in there and lite them tires up.
Great score. |

Will be watching this one develop.
Way out of my league, but love these builds. |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
I have thought this truck was great from the start. Now, a LS swap, WOOHOO!

Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
I believe the most beautiful will also become the most reliable. Good choice… it will be a chore but worth it, besides, what else do you got to do?

Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
At the rate you're going you'll have that jammed in there an lighting up the tires in no time.

I plan on having some verrrrry select performance parts in the lineup. I want to have some substantial horsepower numbers before interrupting my fun with "Old Blue". My plan is to work out the bugs that I currently have, and also build a select replacement LS-swap motor... "A diamond in the rough" |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
Soooo, if you have followed my build, you probably already know of my ignition gremlin that frequently interrupts my fun, and makes me question "Old Blue's" reliability altogether.
For those of you who are not up to speed, this is an error that I get with my Opti-spark distributor that randomly shuts down the ignition.... Randomly! What a nice word! And an awesome feeling of security! Ha! The feeling of knowing that at any moment, your truck could quit...And Will! It could happen in 2 miles, or in 200 miles, but it will quit!!!! EVERY time that it has ever happened though, I would just pull over to the side of the road, crank it for a few secs, and it would start just like nothing ever was wrong. Then I would just wait for it to happen again....Randomly! The codes that it would set were both Low-res & Hi-res Opti-spark errors. This was a Brand-new Accel distributor on my engine, so I was trying to give it benefit of doubt.... I did some research, and just finally bought a brand new MSD Pro-Billet unit to replace it with. Not an easy job, but I wish that I would have done in from the beginning!!! Check-out this pic of the distributor cap! and notice the loose screw & washer from the rotor!....Also the opposed screw was also loose to the point that 1 more turn, and the rotor would have fell off completely. In addition, note the melted areas. WTH? I am not sure how it could even still run!http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...922/rNE4AF.jpg Also check-out the areas on the distributor that are melted about 180 degrees from each other....not sure why, but I am sure that loose screws & washers in the mix of electrical arcing doesn't help matters! Additionally, the rotor was really chewed-up on the point. Probably from the loose screw... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...924/vxXprL.jpg And the new weapon of choice? voilà!(prior to replacing water-pump, balancer & belts... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/102...923/naTYfs.jpg I only had the chance to drive it directly to my storage facility (8 mi.) because of a rain storm, but it ran superior to EVER before!!!! I am so excited that "reliability" may be a word in my future vocabulary!!! |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
Nice work. It is always nice to figure out something that has had to stumped. I have an LT1 in my 48 and I can commiserate on the fun of changing out an Optispark. I swapped mine out up before I got mine on the road. I have had mine for about 6 years and drive my truck everywhere. It has been very reliable. You should be golden since you went with an upgrade from MSD.
Good luck. Marc |

The truck runs altogether different, and much more responsive!...No problem to bake the tires un-intentionally from a start, and brake-em hitting 3rd...Now, just don't leave me stranded....LOL! |
Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
Glad you got it working. The Opti-spark is a know pain in the keester. Everyone I know with an LT1 has gone to MSD.

Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
From what my fiend told me the main issue, least in the vettes was it's placement. It would always get wet and got to crap. Maybe you lasted so long because of being in the truck and possibly protected better.

Re: My Unexpected '66 SWB-Fleet-Restomod Project!
Wow!
It has been a bit since I have posted anything here! My MSD Opti-Spark ignition has been a great investment for "Old Blue"...It has been about 3500 GOOD miles since any ignition issues have surfaced! I am COMPLETELY good with just doing oil-changes, and polishing this gem! LOL! On another note, I found these pics on Facebook of my truck at last weeks Grand Rapids Metro-Cruise. I thought that these pics were hot, and wanted to share! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/aqTKDw.jpg Sorry about the bugs in the radiator! LOL! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/128...922/DJxKwe.jpg |
