Hey Alan what did you prime your motor and trans with? And did you just spray the hugger on the block or is it a high temp paint.

I'm concerned about that as well. I like painting panels the way they are on the car. I hopeing the orange is so bright you can't see difference.

One reason I haven't drilled yet is because I don't have any mouldings. I'm waiting till I get everything bolted down (fenders, cab, bed) Then do alot of measureing. I can reference off of the bed and cab. I'll then pull a straight line from those then drill. Then rub some paint on the bare metal and mount. It will be pretty much the last thing that I do.

Laid out the fine line tape for the top color.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/DSC09696.jpg

Got it bagged and ready for paint. I wanted to paint it tonight, but I'm afraid the air compressor would disturb the neighbors. So hopefully I can get it painted in the a.m.. The best time to paint if you don't have a booth is in the a.m.. The wind is calm and the bugs are gone.

Yeah, I got busy. I can finally rest for a while, at least until the paint dries.

Things don't always go easy for me. Sometimes you spray and not have any problems. Well today was not one of those days.

First mist coat of grey

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/DSC09700.jpg

Then a fish eye popped up.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/DSC09703.jpg

Fish eye is gone.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/DSC09706.jpg

Removing fine line

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/DSC09708.jpg

Ready for clear

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/DSC09710.jpg

Then the big issues. I ran the heck out of it. It was hard to get a good coat in this area. I finished spraying and ran it pretty much all the way across. The only thing I could do was run it in the floor. So I hammered some on until I flowed the run on the paper.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/DSC09713.jpg

I was afraid to run this one any further cause I would have too chase it all the way down. I believe I can sand this one out. It's the same way on both sides.

http://i606.photobucket.com/albums/t...b/DSC09722.jpg

Overall it turned out pretty slick

runs suck huh?

Scott was telling me about "running" out the clear, and I was like :uhmk:

just my lack of knowledge

scotts62 05-17-2009 12:15 PM

Re: My 1965 build thread

Ouch man that sucks, at least its fixable.. most of the time that is the best thing to do is make it run even more and add a ton of material and color sand it right out. I cant wait to see it all put together :metal:

protrash64 05-17-2009 12:20 PM

Re: My 1965 build thread

Can you sand out a metallic paint?

joe231 05-17-2009 12:23 PM

Re: My 1965 build thread

correct me if I'm wrong...but the run is in the clear, so no sanding in the metallic paint..

scotts62 05-17-2009 12:28 PM

Re: My 1965 build thread

Yeah Joe your right it is in the clear so you can just take like 1500 grit and water and sand over the run to blend it in. Just take your time and dont go through the clear to the paint... that sucks

:agree:

Scott, do you ever wipe a thin coat of putty (I use evercoat 416) over the run then sand the run out? It helps me from going thru the adjacent clear around the run. It works well. It also serves as a guide of how much further you have too sand. It doesn't harm the clear, or hasn't with me yet. I've tried it a few times after our painter showed me the trick. When I do it I will take pics of the process.

You know, if I was wealthy and no family I would load up a trailer with everything I need to do restorations and travel around the US helping out my fellow board members. That would be cool.
