Re: 67 GMC super custom build

No that is just a era Stewart Warner 90 degreeadapter. In 67 68 chevy had the speedometer cables run at 90 degree angles on the cruise units for some reason so I added the adapter because there was no way I could run the cable the other way once I added the cold air ducts. It keeps them away from the exhaust manifolds as well.

Thanks for the info. My 67 transducer is mounted differently. Your flying right along with the build.

Well I figured since finding nos hoses for this pre cleaner set up will be next to impossible I figured I'd try using the hosesgm used in 75 76 before going to molded plastic. They are flexible rubber with a spring in it and a clamp on each end. I happen led to find 2 the exact sizes I needed and look completely stock! Just clean them up at the end and they are good to go.

I got my longer lower speedometer cable today and routed it. Underneath they alway just kind of hun from the firewall to the transmission and with the overdrive it was a long wY so I added a grommet to the piece where the gv overdrive sensor used to be so the cable will be nice and snug

So I did some playing around with the cowl intake system. Instead of using the speedometer switch at the cruise control unit for the overdrive I decided to use the switch at the transmission gear to operate that. I decided to use the switch under the hood to operate the door that let's in the air from the cowl.i was worried about having fuel smell in the cab when I run my ac so I made it so the door will let the cowl fresh air in at 30 mph and shut it at 25mph using a vacuum pod and a energized solenoid. The speed sensor grounds the solenoid at 30mph and opens it to let the vacuum to the pod to open the door. Door has a spring and stays closed all the time except over 30mph so fumes can't travel into the cowl area. Basically i turned the tcs system from 1972 into a way to operate the fresh air door. Cowl needs to be moving to operate properly anyway.

Further down the line the air cleaner has a box similar to this as well but it's different. The lid has a bulb that is heat sensitive. It will only take warm air from the heat stove till it warms up and it opens the door to take fresh air from the cowl /pre cleaner. Kind of cool that this was all available back then. The heat stove here is from a big block 366. I'll have to rework it to look proper on the 327.

Both mirrors and arms are complete except some minor finishing. I made the flat area round to match the profile of the mirror heads.

That there is some Cadillac style mirror adjustment apparatus.

I like it:metal:

Got the passenger side mirror mounted. I used a grommet in the cable hole between the backing plate and the door skin so it doesn't rub the cables on the metal plus it also holds them together while I screw the mounting screws in. If you didn't know these were not factory they could all most pass for stock.

Driver side done as well. All the cables reach where I wanted the controls to be so that is perfect and all vent windows clear. Glad to be done with these.

I made a mounting bracket for the guidematic relay. I'll weld this on under the dash right over the vent. Should be easy to access if needed there.

I've turned my attention to the harness that goes under the seat and the seat controls. My new seat covers are taking a long time so good time to get the wiring done. I'm going to run my dome and cargo thru the flat ribbon wires as well instead of how they did it from the factory in these trucks. I'm still not sure exactly what power seat switches and skirting I'm going to use yet.

I didn't like the added part I put in the speedometer for the overdrive so I used the sensor at the transmission housing instead. I also took a broken speedometer cable clips i had and welded it to the hose clamp and rerouted the speedometer cable the way it was intended to be with cruise . It Looks Cleaner without the 45 adapterand the sensor. Also you can see where I mounted the tcs solenoid that is going to control the fresh air intake vacuum pod from the cowl.

Ha yeah sometimes but more ot of excitement. Some of these thing I'll think about for weeks before I pull the trigger. The worst is when you do something with nos parts that aren't readily available and I mess up. That hurts.

I got a few parts in the mail this week so I did some stuff on the truck tonight. I added a 1964 pontiac throttle dash pot to the 4gc carb with a micro switch that originally was used for switch pitch transmissions. It will be used to ground the solenoid for the cowl intake every time the throttle is closed and close the intake door. It will only open again once the throttle is opened. That way on long idles it hopefully won't bring a fuel smell into the cab. Also I had to put anew vacuumpod on the a/c idle up. I also adjusted the dash pot so even when the a/c is on and the truck is idling higher the fresh air door will still be in the closed position til the throttle is pushed down.

So I put my in cab fuel tank in for fitment and after the new floor and taking the roof apart the neck was no longer in the center. Close but not perfect. How much tolerance does the gasket give you? Also the new floor was far from perfect on the passenger side. Driver was perfect. The bottom holes lined up but there was a 1/4 inch gap between them and the tank and the tank does not flex that much. Spacers I guess will need to be used on the 2 rear bottom bolts.

IronCanine 07-26-2023 10:56 PM

Re: 67 GMC super custom build

Once the tank is bolted in, you can put a pipe in the neck (largest diameter that you have that'll fit) and using it as a lever you can tweak the neck position to center it.

So I changed up my illuminated entry wiring today. My interior lighting will come on as factory when the door is open and when the headlight switch is on. I made it so when you push the outside door button only the door lock lights will come on for 35 seconds. That just incase your door is locked in the dark you can see the hole. Now I also added a small light to the ignition switch so it will come on for 35 seconds as well so when you get in and you close the door and it's dark you can still see where the ignition switch is. With the sentinel headlight kit as soon as you turn the key and the sensor sees that its dark all your dash lights come on automatic . I have another timer I may use on the interior lights but the reason I seperated them from the lock lights is I don't want the lock lights to come on when yhe interior lights are on when I turn them on from the headlight switch.

I also took the fiber optic light that was for the ash tray and converted it to a mini bulb. Much better lighting. There will be no more fiber optics in my truck anymore. I ordered another set of clear bulbs as I like those much better than colored bulbs.

So I hooked this light up to my dash lights but I did not like how this was always on when the dash lights were on. So I had recently taken a cruise control unit apart and it had a flexible brass tab on it with a contact point on it which worked perfectly for this application. I used a piece of plastic to seperate conductivityfrom it and the ash tray and riveted a wire connector to it (so the ash tray can still be removed) and the point on the brass . This way it can ground and slide across the top of the housing . Then I put a thick clear vinyl decal on the back end of the upper inner housing so the ground contact will slide over it when the ash tray is closed and the ground will not touch. The light will only come on when the ash tray is slid out an inch or more and shut off when closed. Just like the glove box door will work.

And maby not so fast on the fiber optics. I forgot I have this very uncommon 1973-74 chevy washer wiper plaquard that lights up. I thought this piece was very cool and bought it. I would like to see if I can get this 3d printed to use as my ignition plaquard. It would light up just like the keyhole. This one might be far fetched but I'll see where I may be able to get this done. Not sure what else I would use this for.

Well I took the piece to a local 3D print shop and they said they can do it so well see when it returns. But today is a very important day. I am no longer imprisoned to sms auto fabrics. I got my final pieces from them. I really hated how long I had to wait for some of these pieces and the service was hard to go thru but wow their work is top notch. All the custom stuff I wanted they nailed 100%. I got the door anel inserts today. Feels so good for that to come to a close. Now all I really have left is body and paint. Then assembly. But this dream still feels years away. I sent these to SMS in September of 2018 and I only got them today.

So they 3d printed me a piece on colored plastic. Now they are going to mold me one in clear plastic so the light can shine thru it. A few tweaks to this are going to be made but it's close. Font is perfect. 67 didn't have accessory like the 68 up did so I made this one without.

So I went hunting for things gm did in the 70s with fiber optics and I found this piece. It has a bulb in it and you can hook 5 different optic lines up to it from a 1976 Oldsmobile. So I have decided to use the optic for both the lens and the keyhole. It's actually very bright with a led. So now I just have to wait for the clear printed piece with the lettering and see how it looks after that. If it's all good I'll modify the dash for the part.
