Today I worked on making the adjustment arm. I welded these two together.

And smoothed it out

Then bent this little jog into the piece so it lines up correctly, then drilled a hole through both pieces and put a bolt through.

Today I got both the coil springs installed and then torqued the lower ball joints to spec. |

I was then able to put the wheels on and put the truck back on the ground for the first time in months.

And since I was already outside I just decided to drill out the plastic pins and separate the collapsable steering shaft.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Bracket turned out great. :chevy:

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Nice job! I might have to get you to make me one for my truck!

Well about a week ago the temperature dropped and now we're down to -10 celcius with almost one foot of snow on the ground, but I've still been making progress

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

I started with working on getting the framerail near the steering box welded back in place, so first I tacked it up
|
Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

Then I fully welded it up and ground it down smooth with a flap disk, it actually looks much nicer than the factory weld seam which can be seen to the far left

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

I also went to the hardware store and picked up some bolts that are the correct length, the steering box then got bolted in place for the second last time
|
Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

I then cut the pre-existing solid shaft to the correct length
|
Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside

I then slid the solid shaft into the collapsable shaft, it's sticking in about 1". All I need to do now is weld it up solid and I'm done with the steering

I just spent some time making sure it was all square and I fully welded it up. Steering is pretty much done now!

Just last night we got another almost 10" of snow. This is a lot more than we usually get |
Re: Nik's 62 build
No pictures but today is my 17th birthday and my mom and dad surprised me with a nice set of tires for my 16" rims! I'm really excited to get them mounted and on the truck soon! I'll post some pics tomorrow when there's a little more light. I also just passed a road test and I now have my novice license, meaning I can finally drive on my own without a supervisor. So now I'm going to be trying even harder to get the truck road worthy for this spring so I can insure it and drive it!

Here is some info on the tires, they are Dunlop rover max traction's, LT245-75R16. Tread pattern is fairly aggressive, 90% tread left. The direction of this build has changed a bit since I first started, at first I was wanting to lower the truck but now I've decided to keep it stock height and get some bigger more aggressive tires because I'm going to be driving the truck on fishing and hunting trips on rough roads in the near future. |
Re: Nik's 62 build
Happy birthday Nik. Keeping the truck stock height sounds like a good plan if you're going off the paved roads
