Dad and my sis, her friend and dads bud went to DC thursday-sunday, here is a pic they took thought it was funny lol..

Anyhow, went to the college thing in town, picked up some papers for welding classes, machinest classes, and general auto classes..

then swung by the air force table on the way back, still undecided what I want to do, anyone have anything to say on this matter pm me or say something on here, im open to opionions advise..

Ok now, Got my new new fuel pump on, and put a THIN layer of pipe dope on threads just in case (was leaking, pita)

put new gasket on waterneck, with THIN layer of black rtv

got tach mounted and partially wired,

Does the red (hot) wire go to the ign. unfused? And does the green wire go to the tach or something? Im not sure, thanks!

Re: "Rice Rocket'

Got some stuff done today:

Brakes bled!

Air filter stud shortened and re threaded!

carberator (edelbrock 600 man. choke) torn down and internal pieces soaking in cleaner!

I think thats pretty good for 3 hours of work! (for me at least lol)

Re: "Rice Rocket'

I love seeing you teenagers work with these old trucks because (1) It reminds me of my high school days with my 72 and more importantly you guys are the future of this hobby. Is that a factory fuel line and fitting or is it one you made up yourself?

Re: "Rice Rocket'

Are you planning on adjusting your valves with the engine off or running?

oldblue1968chevy 09-02-2010 08:07 PM

Re: "Rice Rocket'

Ok, FINALLY got the danged fuel line fixed!!!!

I adjusted the vavles with motor off, like ticker and the book said

"1. Set the engine to TDC compression #1. This is done by removing the #1 spark plug and the coil wire or HEI distributor connection, putting your finger over the hole and having someone "bump" the engine until you feel pressure..and then bumping it carefully so the timing mark is at '0' degrees. If you overshoot, you need to go all the way around until you feel pressure again. A remote starter switch for $15 makes this a bunch easier...

2. Adjust exhaust valve: 1, 3, 4, 8

3. Adjust intake valve: 1, 2, 5, 7

4. Set the engine to TDC compression #6. Same as above, but with the #6 plug.

5. Ajust exhaust valve: 2, 5, 6, 7

6. Adjust intake valve: 3, 4, 6, 8

They're set to zero lash plus 1/2 turn for a CompCams cam.

Adjusting them while running just makes a mess and ends up with way too much preload."

I did just as he said and I still have a slight tick...soo guess ima re do it or go back and listen with a hose or something to hear where it comming from...

EDIT: Truck sounds REALLY good btw, i love it! I pulled it off the patio of the shop and ive got the clutch way off, with the pedel completely depressed, it BARELY moves, so I need to tighten it up, right?

Re: "Rice Rocket'

Are you sure it's a valve tick and not a slight exhaust leak at the exhaust manifold? just a thought

bigguy69 09-02-2010 09:36 PM

Re: "Rice Rocket'

:agree: if you done like you said i bet there is a little exhaust leak. now we need the burnout video!!!

oldblue1968chevy 09-02-2010 10:07 PM

Re: "Rice Rocket'

geez guys lol

no burnout video yet!!

i'll try the exhaust leak later..good idea

manifolds to head, or manifolds to tubing leak? or both?

and anyone have an idea on clutch adjustin?

rustaddict 09-03-2010 06:11 PM

Re: "Rice Rocket'

Good Job on the valves! I agree with these other fellas a small exhaust leak will sound just like a loose valve. What did you use to seal your exhaust manifolds to your heads? That'd be the first place I'd look. Orange RTV works wonders if you let it sit overnight after you tighten it up. I think the clutch pedal is supposed to have like an inch of free play before it starts engaging the clutch. If you ever get a chance to order one of the GM reprints of the shop manual for your truck, you'll love it. It tells you about everything from the front bumper to the back bumper and sometimes they have details that the other manuals leave out.

oldblue1968chevy 09-03-2010 06:19 PM

Re: "Rice Rocket'

I just used a gasket between manifolds and head..

Inch of free play huh, looks like it would fall off with that much? I know it must need alot of free play lol

You need a inch of free play at the pedal not the clutch fork.

Look for black sooty spots at the manifold gaskets, the donuts, and on the manifolds themselves. They have been known to crack. That will be your leak if you have one.

You already fixed the fuel leak, but newbies to line flaring sometimes get off center or over tighten the tool and it causes the flare to crack and leak.

oldblue1968chevy 09-03-2010 11:03 PM

Re: "Rice Rocket'

no it was pre flared from parts store..

I got an inch or so at the pedel, i'll adj. some more morrow and see what happens, i doubt it''ll fix it but i dunno

my gf's dad was saying i could have the fork off the TB?..idk

i don't use gaskets on my manifolds to head anymore, my 85 kept blowing them out and dad told me that most old chevy V8s don't need them so i haven't run any on my stuff since

oldblue1968chevy 09-04-2010 05:11 PM

Re: "Rice Rocket'
