I drug this thing home a few weeks ago. It's a new piece to the puzzle for the C-50. Aint it pretty? |

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...590&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...590&fit=bounds The frame was bent by the pogo stick seat somehow. I just used the big 50 t persuade it gently back into place. |
Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
I don't know the condition of the TBI 350 but I'm sure the early 4L80 transmission would be good for somebody. If anyone is interested let me know.
|
Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
Anyway the plan for now on the C-50 is to transfer everything to this frame. I can put a 1480 series yoke on the 14 bolt rear. Then use the whole driveshaft assembly out of the Dodge donor truck. I'll just let the wheelbase fall in its own place. It will end up around 150 inches. The P-30 frame as it sits is 180" wheelbase and it looks like it will be pretty simple to do. I know none of this will be simple lol.

I would be second on the list for the 4l80 depending on the year and cost if Scoti passes.
|
Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
I'll let ya'll know on the transmission. It is a 95 model by the way. I already had an offer for engine and transmission if it's a 4 bolt block.

Well I got everything buttoned up and cleaned up yesterday. We will be testing at Xtreme this Saturday. My hood turned out good. I added some rubber spacers to the hood braces and got the proper bow back in it. It probably looks better than it has in 40 years. |
Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
Well we went to test that weekend. I only got to make three hits all night. On the last pass I had some valvetrain noise that worried me. Also on a video Ken took the truck seemed to be making a lot of smoke. This past weekend I did a leak down test and that all came out good. I pulled the #8 pair of lifters to examine them and they checked ok. Getting them back in was a PITA and it took awhile. I got everything back together and cleaned the truck up yesterday. It's in the trailer and ready for Topeka next week.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
Well as usual Topeka was a struggle for me. We dead headed up there last Tuesday and got parked. I unloaded the truck and had neutral safety switch issues. I thought I fixed it but had problems with it in the lanes again. I got that cured but then the truck would crank but not start. Ken held a jumper wire from the battery hot to the ignition power source on the MSD box and it started. That meant my key switched ignition power source was dead. We thought we were going to just change the ignition switch out and were waiting for one to get to a local OReillys. The thing is we couldn't and I still haven't gotten the lock cylinder out. I thought about it and told Ken it would work with a jumper wire so he built one and I got make two test hits finally on Wednesday around 5 o'clock. I had a couple of good lights that day but I was just off as in slow during the official time trials and eliminations. I lost second round of the first race gaining me ten points on my Division total. I made the decision to race the second race but not claim the points. I filled out a form to make it official the night before we started the second one. I lost second round giving up the stripe by .001. Then proceeded to load up as fast as I could and hit the road. Dropping the second race for me means I still get to claim both races in Tulsa September 21st. I'll regroup and maybe test before Tulsa. Then it will be time for the Fall Nationals and the Jegs Allstars at the Tx Motorplex in October.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...590&fit=bounds The photo at the top is my old and only key to the truck I've had for years. Like 30 plus years. The photo at the bottom is one of my new keys . I have two NOS GM keys and two GM replacement keys. I replaced the door locks at the same time. That's why I have four keys. I've never owned four keys to this truck. |

In the meantime on the downtime from racing. With the upcoming ultra important races I decided to do some improvements. It has been a long time since I pulled the electric shifter out of the truck. I mean like 2009 long time ago. It still had the two relays I needed and the shift timer is still there so why not try to be more consistant! I ordered a new solenoid and worked on this thing for a few days. I had to rewire all of it. They had a revised wiring diagram that seems to be a lot better. It's all together functional nd as clean as I could make it. |

Well when it's two months out from the Prom you gotta plan on lookin' good. The Prom is the Jegs Allstars for me. I decided to clean up the fuel cell. I used my new 4" grinder and the wool pads that I polished my wheels with. It cleaned up pretty good. After that I was looking at the mounting tabs along with the funky looking hardware and decided I had to fix that. I replaced the hardware with stainless button head allen bolts and polished the tabs. |

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
Well it was a rough weekend in Tulsa. I lost first round both races. Almost everyone was lost when it came to reaction times. There is something goofy going on with their system. I felt like I had a handle on it after the first race. We had a crazy schedule trying to dodge rain the whole time we were there. We made two time trials Friday and first round Saturday morning for the second race. I was in the the first pair out Saturday morning at 8 o'clock. The track faces due east and I couldn't see the tree. It was just blinding me. Needless to say my light sucked and I lost. I fell to 6th place for now and my season is done. All I can do is regroup and go back to the Tx Motorplex for the National and the Jegs Allstars.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
I guess it's past time for an update. the first thing I started to check was the trans brake wiring. I jacked the truck up only to find fluid all over the floor on the drivers side. The bellhousing was broken from the passenger side all the way across through the selector shaft. In hindsight I really think this started in Topeka and I didn't know. It's a good thing I lost first round both races in Tulsa. This could have been bad.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
I found this a little over a week before I needed to be loaded for the National Event and Allstar Race. I called my friend Chad Dickerson and he got all my stuff put in a new case for me. All I did for a week and a half was work on the truck and get ready for the race.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
We went to the race on Wednesday and got set up. Thursday morning we had the Jegs Allstars breakfast and opening ceremonies. Then Super Street went directly into our first of two time trials. I was .016 on the tree and 19.911 at 152.83. When lifted my foot the throttle was hung wide open. I thought I was going to have to hit the chute and the kill switch but the toe hook saved me. That damn thing must have been running 160 when it came back up. I went back to the trailer and didn't find anything wrong. The second run I was .011 on the tree but a second after the throttle stop opened the carbs I lost the throttle linkage .All I could do is idle back to the trailer. That took a minute at 1600 rpm! Lol. When I got back I found my enderle bell crank was broken out at the top where the rod attaches from the pedal. I didn't have a replacement but Ken found one that a Comp Eliminator guy had. It was the wrong size thread for the ball that goes on it. I walked across to some Top Alcohol Funny Car guys and asked if they had a tap and die set since they tear up so much Sh*t. Of course they did and loaned it to me. Then I had to borrow a drill bit too from them. An hour later we were fixed whick was fine as we were done for the day anyhow.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
They gave us all our Jegs swag as they called it Thursday at the Breakfast. One thing of course is the Allstar vehicle and trailer stickers. When you are one of eight racers in the country out of probably 1000 in your class you display them proudly. If you've done it twice you stack them.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
That was a nasty crack in the trans housing. Are you worried about what may have caused it?

This is the list that is published in National Dragster every month for the Jegs Allstar points. We all watch it throughout the season to see who is running who at the end.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
As ya'll can probably tell I didn't do very well at the races. I ran the Division 7 Allstar Art Hoover first round of the National and beat him. We were both .006 on the tree and he turned me loose on the top end and gave me the win. I ran one our Division 4 guys Mike Feeler in the second round. We were pretty even on the line and I screwed it up at the finish line trying to take as little as I could. I gave him the finish line by around .010. In the Allstar race I was actually the #1 Qualifier with my one and only full time trial. Who did I get to run? Art Hoover of course. He had a little mph on me but I'm faster in the 1/8th mile. So I'm thinking I caught him off guard the first time when I came around him the first time. In my head I'm thinking he will race me different this time. We had a drastic change in weather and wind so everybody was fast. I slowed mine down quite a bit but it was still set up too hot. I was .006 on the tree again to Arts .005 the race was at the end of the track. I go past him like last time and wait for him top match my speed and I start driving on him. I was just easing back into him holding a wheel on him. He turned that wheel into three or four in the end. He parked that 156+mph car at 140mph and dropped me on my head. He's a good driver and his car has damn good brakes! Art ended up winning the Allstars along with Division 7. Our Division finished second by one round in the end.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
We came home and Ken helped me get the hood off. I pulled the motor and took the heads and intake back to Slick Rick for some updating we had discussed this summer. Meanwhile it was time to really look at things. I was finding a lot of what looked like bearing material in the oil filter. It wasn't like a normal bearing fleck so I was very concerned. Rick took the heads apart and ruled out anything there. I pulled the oil pan and the first thing I looked at was the rear main. The thrust on the crank was ok but the bearing had a lot of wear on it. That transmission problem was the culprit. When the transmission is only holding on by two bolts and the torque converter it is putting too much load on the back of the crank. There should only be .003 to .005 of endplay n the crank. Mine was way out there at .012. Luckily it was just bearing wear and the crank wasn't hurt.

Re: Ok Boys and Girls it's Storytime
That walk in the crankshaft also takes it's toll on other things. It was causing wear on the outer edge of the rod bearings.
