done alot of research on the exhaust modification and all of it said i'd be ok. most of the research agreed that primary length is not super critical and the lenghts im playing with are minimal. so here in the next day or so i'll finalize exhaust route and have it tigged in. did get the starter i cleaned up and painted installed. carb linkage came in, so maybe tomorrow i can get some more of the top end installed. |
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Not much new to add today. Had a hunny do list last night. Did have enough time to go out and install carb and throttle return bracket and tighten down the water bypass lines. I'll get the fuel lines buttoned up tonight and install the heater lines and water bypass for the intake to the water pump. Took some more looks at my options on driver side header and think I'll have my answer narrowed down tonight, so maybe I'll pull the header back off.
Also go the correct bolt for the big block starter nose bracket. I had a 5/16" bolt, but it was 1/4" longer than I wanted. So went through my boxes of bolts and found a nice ARP bolt that matches the rest of the engine. Overkill, but it matches. Also used ARP bolts on the flywheel pans.... |

Couple of pics.
one of the big block starter nose mount, an under side view of the pans and transmission and one showing how the headers hang. Forgot to get pics of the top end work last night. I'll get some tonight when I go out there. |
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Nice work getting the big block set up, I didn't know you had to engineer everything to make it work/fit. Looking good, I like it.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Great job on the engine!

So far its going as to be expected as I really didn't have any issues other than the driver side exhaust, which considering all that's been done its pretty minimal of an issue. I'll have that panned out 1st part of next week. And thanks for the compliments!! |

did get some pics last night of the top end work I did Tuesday night. I'm not 100% thrilled about the return spring bracket, but it does work and look nice, I'd just have preferred a smaller mount. But it's ok, we'll work with it. All clearance on top end is good. Throttle rod from the firewall to the carb clearance is good. But I won't do that until the header issue is fixed in case I need to raise that side of the block for install. Heres a few pics for reference or if anyone has any interest in any of the parts for their own builds. Put some heat insulator on the fuel line where it rests on the intake. I'm looking for a line holder that I can mount off the thermostat bolt or an intake bolt and maybe elevate it off the intake, but the DEI stuff is nice products and will work either way.

Got some time to work on the last valve cover last night. Should have the polishing done tonight since its going to rain all day anyways. So good indoor project after work tonight. Hope to get some paint down tonight too.
Its cleaning up pretty good but this cover has more casting flaws than the other one. |

Ordered the stainless oil pressure gauge / block kit through Summit. Its an Auto Meter kit #3235....I may need an adapter fitting at the gauge, but will know more when it come in. This kit is a 4' length, but they have a longer one also.
The hose is -3 AN which is 1/8" inside, so same as the plastic line kits, but looks much better. |

Had a pretty busy weekend, so truck work was marginal.
Did get the last of the white walls on the step side. Got the old step side tires on the fleetside and got the old fleetside tires on Austins 63. Also go the original tailgate off the fleetside and my rust free donar on. Eric came by with his two sons and picked up the tailgate and a pair of inner door panels for his 62, which should be in town next weekend. So our Fayetteville c-10 club has 2 new trucks in the last few weeks. Got the step sides old crossmember pulled out from under the carport and gave me a bunch more room. Rest of the time was spent helping Austin clean his truck out. |

Have been busy with more research. Have ordered POL engine mounts and have a set of coated headers coming form a forum member who ran them with POL mounts. His truck is lowered, so he couldn't use the headers, but had no problem with fitment on the POL mounts. So engine will come out for new mounts and headers. It will also make it easier to swap the through out bearing at the same time. Shouldn't take more than a few hours to do it all, so just waiting on parts to arrive. Will keep you updated.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Those look amazing. They'll go great with the valve covers
|
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
When are you swapping those. Can I come help?
|
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Of coarse. Have to get mounts and headers in 1st. Trans mount should be here tomorrow.
|
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Man dis thing is gonna look sweeeeeet! Not that it isn't already...sheesh! :chevy:
|
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Thanks TJ. A constant evolution it seems. Be nice to get the motor buttoned up. Maybe I'll start the interior tear down and paint since they are calling for rain all weekend.
|
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Those headers are sweat, well worth swapping out, are they along with the performance online tubular mounts going to solve the header clearance issue?
|
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Yes...The PO said he was using the same POL mounts and no clearance issues. I may end up ordering the headers new....seems I was 2nd in line on the purchase and I'm not sure if its been resolved yet. If I don't have an answer by Monday then I'll just order them from Summit who's $5.00 cheaper than Jegs at the moment. All the frame trimming I've done should be adequate also.
Its not the route I wanted to go, but it does handle several things at once, so I'll roll with the punches on this one. I'm ready to fire this monster up and go through some gears. |

Got a lot done over the weekend. Started with stripping the cab down Saturday. And then started stripping paint. Will have another day or so of sanding and some of the harder to reach places, but coming out nicely so far and great metal underneath. No metal issue on any of the cab walls so far.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Column will pulled this week and go into Austin 63. I have a factory 4 speed column so I don't need to convert this one with the 4 speed delete that I have.
Also talked with the forum member with the headers. Looks like they'll be enroute this week. So I can get the engine/trans done....finally. POL mounts should be here in a few days, trans mount is ready. Just need headers in. |

Here is a sample of the color I did the rims in. Also still trying to figure out the exterior color pattern. Exterior will be blue, but trying to decide if I want a two tone white top w/blue roof, or just do a white roof as you did on your truck 62 Barnfind. |
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Nice Progress!!!:metal::metal::metal:
|
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Its getting there. I was going to hold off on the interior until I had the engine/trans conversion done. But with a week down time waiting on parts to arrive, I figured it was as good a time as any. So I started removing all the interior components....just have the cab vents left. Which off coarse led to stripping the cab. I'll have the rest of the cab prepped and ready for primer hopefully in the next two nights after work. We had a lot of rain this weekend, so I didn't want to get anything sprayed until the air dried up some.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
You do awesome work bro. I do not possess the talent you do. I'm looking for a painter in this area (Triad) that will do the paint right and reasonable. So far no luck.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
PS, I have some of the chrome hub caps if anyone wants to trade for the white ones. I have two NOS white ones and I would trade for of the chrome ones for ones in good shape, other wise I am going to paint the chrome ones with rattle cans, or powder coat.

Got a few more hours in on stripping the cab. Focused on the dash tops, which are done. Still need to pull the column to do the area around that, but more tonight. So far so good.

Got a few more of prep done inside the cab. Just need to pull column and hit the face of the dash up around it. Rest of cab is stripped, sanded or scuffed for paint. Wiped acetone to clean until I had clean white towels....so we're getting closer to paint. I need to get some primer on the bare metal tonight so I don't get any surface rust starting. I'll pull the glass when we spray, but tape it up for primer.
Green scour pad with acetone took care of the harder to hit places and a stripper disk on the grinder for the big areas. Would have been easier with the windshield out, but its doable with the glass in. |

What a miserable task. I can't remember any prep job harder than the inside of my cab. Glad to see you have it mostly behind you.
