Vintage Brakes
We used to call then 'Push And Pray' brakes.....
DO NOT turn the drums ! . even if ripped up . Once you go through it all and replace the linings, loose bushings and so on, adjust each 90 degree linkage so it's *just*approaching 90 degrees as the shoes begin to take up . More than 90 degrees and the brakes will e very grabby and uneven, less than 90 degrees and they'll be very poor and the pedal will have too much travel . Begin adjusting at each backing plate and slowly and carfully work your way to the brake pedal last . |

Useless Information....
And to think during my entire career I was told repeatedly " NO ONE is ever going to care about those old junkers you love so much !" .

It takes three hands and you need an appointment to stop. But, Yeah ...it's a blast.

Funky Brakes
Sadly, the Huck (rhymes with "SUCK") brakes fitted from 1937 ~ 1950 (? '51 ?) weren't much better, I feel your pain .

...Been a few months since I posted on this thread . So much has happened, The end of June I was hearing a noise in the drive train. After some researching when it would make the most noise. I narrowed it down to the transmission front bearing retainer was broken. After removing the transmission, further examination showed the main drive gear and adjoining main shaft cluster were trashed
...As I was taking things apart I realized a trans mount without any rubber contributed to the broken pieces and rebuilt mine after no luck finding another. ...I found new pieces to fix the transmission, but I also found a used transmission on Ebay in Minnesota . I ordered it and received the trans on Aug 31st. ...That day I was repainting the house after already repairing broken windows from a recent hail storm. My Wife said the house can wait "fix the '35" . So I could get it put up. I dropped everything got the transmissions pieced together and installed and have been driving it almost every weekend since . ...First thing we had to do was take it by my Mother In Law to show her since she is the one that bought it for us . ...I will try to post up pictures in the order they happened. It's been 4 months and I got rid of my flip phone so I can ZOOM with my 3 yr old grandson and his parents. So I have lots of pictures. |

...July 23 I thought I would pull the trans real quick. ...HaHa...
...By Aug 13th I had realized I wasn't going to get this done inside my 8'x20' CONEX because I was going to have to move the rear axle back so the torque tube would be out of the way to pull the transmission back and out through the top. So I set up an awning to work under. ...Aug 17 I got the trans out....WHEW!!! ...At that point the bad news. It was the beginning of the search. ...then the Ebay listing for a complete trans popped up , correspondence took place and the purchase was made.:) |

...Put the mats back in and backed it into the CONEX to take down the awning and pick up my tools. ...I kept it under double cover while I waited for parts and worked on the transmission ...9-7 I took it out for day 2 test drive. ...9-13 I took My Wife out for a Sunday drive.
