Yes, you would definitely want to seal it. I seal anykind of body work before I shoot base coat. I have not used this particular product before but have seen some that turned out pretty good.

Who's A/C is that and can you get some closer pictures of how the condensor mounts? I'm rebuilding my core support now for my s10 swap, and knowing how the condensor mounts will help me plan how my radiator will mount. Thanks!

Re: 48 Build Pictures

That is a Southern Air Superfrost unit from Southern Rods. It came as an A-Z kit from them. Because of the way the radiator support has the radiator mounted, it seemed best to just mount the condenser to the outside of the support. The condenser is probably about 1" at the bottom and 1 1/2" at the top from the radiator. Hopefully, this is close enough to the radiator to get good air flow. I really could not mount it on the inside of the radiator support or it would have interferred with the radiator. I just used some scrap galvanized brackets I had and bent them to make the mounts for the condenser. I can take some closer pictures for you. I am now under the dash working on routing the ducts, so the don't interfer with the wiper mechanism and all the other stuff that will be under the dash. So far So good.

Thanks for the additional pics! Knowing you have to make your own brackets to mount it, makes me feel better. I can make brackets, giving me the freedom to place the radiator where it will work best for the truck.

Looks good! And very clean!

looks much better than my vintage air set up. it's nice to see it stuffed up in the top of the dash.

Mylow53, could you post up pics so those of us who haven't bought A/C yet can compare?

Re: 48 Build Pictures

You can check the dimensions on the Southern Rod website. They have a virtual catalog that shows a lot of detail. It fits under the dash nicely and I have my wiper rods in and looks like I will be ok on space. I am going to have to modify my glove box area as one of the outlets is pretty close to the glove box. I don't think it will be too big of a deal. They have an internet special on these right now and you also get a $50 credit you can use for something else. Don't know if you are supposed to promote anything on this site, but you might check out their ad.

Re: 48 Build Pictures

I will try to get some better pictures. I may raise it up just a little more and I might be able to avoid the glove box issue. I will keep you posted.

heres a shot of the vintage air system in my truck. i think what he has in his truck is way better since you can't see it.... mine still allows the use of the original glove box but it's a tight fit.... say Building 55 can you still use the cowl vent with this setup?

Greg -

At least you left yourself room to work. I modifed the brackets with the same unit you used and tucked it up a little higher under the dash. I am not 100% sure I can use an original glove box.

Wow that is low. Besides the glove box - what is above it, dead space?

buildinga55 02-17-2010 03:30 PM

Re: 48 Build Pictures

Yes, just dead space above the glove box. I think now that I have the wiper setup under the dash I can probably raise this thing another inch or two. Probably will mess with it more tonight.

Re: 48 Build Pictures

My cowl vent has been welded shut, but the cowl vent is all there and in the closed position under my dash. I actually and hanging the AC unit from the hinges on the old cowl vent. So, yes, you should be able to use the cowl vent.

Re: 48 Build Pictures

TYPO - Mine is hanging from the cowl vent hinges. I think my previous post left out a word or two.

Re: 48 Build Pictures

Well, I finally got a few parts painted this weekend now that it has warmed up. Hopefully, I can get all this underhood, and hidden stuff painted, then I will paint the outside of the truck all at once.

It's been a while since I posted anything. I got the truck painted this weekend and started buffing today. I have a lot of buffing to do. There are a lot of parts to one of these trucks. But I took a couple days off this week, if I don't decide to go fishing instead.
