A friend of the family was a truck driver and he slipped off the front bumper of his Mac and caught ring on hood ornament. He lost the finger and while in the hospital his nurse said "You can wear your wedding ring on a chain around your neck" Being the smartass he was he replied " Are you F'in crazy? Look what happened when I wore it on my finger".

Now I never wear a ring, nor does my wife normally. She does wear rings on occasion when we go out to some place special.

I do have quite a few rings that I use to wear when I was young and living the good life, but then I only wore rings when going some place. Never wore one to work or when working in the garage.

Back in the good ole days I have to admit I did have some platform shoes and a mink coat, lol. Neither would be good to wear when working in the garage.

I have two brothers that are married and neither of them wear wedding rings.

Currently ring less.
1st is in a concrete slab up this way. Cold temps and no gloves=ring lost.
2nd, crushed between jackhammer handle and a concrete wall, glad I had cutters in my pocket and the rings were very narrow bands.
3rd, my wife has, to tight for me to wear anymore.

My dad drilled it into my head from the time I was a little kid. Dont ever wear any rings or jewelry anywhere near the garage or shop. I have known plenty of people almost lose there hand in a bench grinder or burn the hell out of it with a welder. I did the smartest thing possible and refuse to get married.:lol:

I generally forget to take mine off. The danger of wearing it can also be offset by the prtection it can give. I've gotten it caught and thought I was going to loose my finger...but then again I've had something come down on the side of my hand...and the ring kept it from smashing my fingers.

I wear mine but it comes off alot and have been questioned why it was off by my wife and she doesnt mind when I tell her why. When I do body work,electrical work, heavy lifting or even wrenching on my own vehicle or anyone elses it comes off so basicaly I always have it but not always on me. Now time for the horror story...
I am a welder by trade and gold is a very good conductor of electricity well I wasnt paying attention and went to tack two pieces of steel togather and with my un gloved hand on the table (ring hand) and a bad grond when I pulled the trigger instant fire finger. Gave me a nasty blister but no loss of skin and a junk bent wedding band.

Tattoo seems like a reasonable idea ? Had a buddy who is an electrician talk about doing that.

The older (slower and weaker:lol:) I get the more I need to pay attention to these things.

My father was stupid careless with tools and when I was a kid I watched him drill a hole in his hand, cut 2 1/2 fingers off in a table saw, and almost completely sever his thumb off with an xacto knife. I also had a neighbor that constantly quoted "the safety man says" and then an appropriate comment about safety glasses, goggles, etc. I developed a healthy respect for shop safety early on, and "never" wore jewelry in the garage.

Of course there was the time - I was going to the store, NOT "working in the garage". On the way out the door, I decided to grab the heater valve off my flathead to take with me. Long story short the wrench slipped and slammed my wedding ring into the positive post of the battery. I instantly knew I was in trouble, yanked the ring off and threw it across the garage which burned my right hand (it was glowing). I didn't lose my finger but 3rd degree electrical burns removed most everything down to the bone, the good news being the burns killed the nerves so I never did feel any pain!

I've been married for decades and never had a ring on since our wedding. My wife rarely wears one either because she is also very active with her hands. I certainly wouldn't consider these stories urban legend or wives tales. I've known too many guys missing digits.

I wear mine everyday. I know the hazards but I have always worn a ring of somesort and never had an issue. (Knocking on wood)

I've worn one for 30 years this Oct., but it comes off (as well as my watch) any time I'm doing shop work that involves hand work and/or close work. The hardest thing for me to get used to was putting the darn thing somewhere I remembered....If I take it off outside it's going to get lost, so I put it on top of the dresser, every time. Even if I'm outside, I stop what I'm doing and go in and put it there. Too many years to have it disappear.

While doing repairs on a Bobcat skid steer, I almost got my ring and finger caught. I quickly took off my ring and lost it in the mud. I'm still ringless, although I get a guilt trip once in a while.

I'm in Tool & Die and between all the work at home,including more machining. I almost never wear mine. I only wear it when we go out.......Sometimes ;)

I wear mine all the time, although I know I shouldn't. I've had it snag on things a few times, but never bad enough to actually hurt me. My BIL nearly lost his finger. He was standing on his front porch holding onto a board overhead. He went to step down and his ring hung on a nail head and nearly degloved his finger. He took it off and has never worn it again. Like I said, i know I shouldn't wear mine while doing manual tasks. But I just never think to take it off.

my ex father in law jumped off of the top of a large case loader yrs ago and left his ring and finger on top of the ladder opf the loader. caught on a weld wire...

I wore my wedding ring the day i got married and that was the last time. I don't like jewelery. It helps that NOT wearing one is safer too.

I program NC machines and every time I have to go out to the shop, I leave it on my desk.

1. I don't want to damage it.
2. I've personally seen what wearing one can cause in certain situations.
3. My boss will give us a temporary lay off if we are found near the machine controls with jewelry on.

When I get home in the afternoons, if I plan to work outside or on anything, I set it on the nightstand. I had a tendency to take it off while working on things a leave it laying around and have to go looking for it.

I'm a general contractor. At work I don't wear my ring because #1 it can catch on something and go into auto removal mode#2, just don't want to wear the thing out! sanding/concrete/ framing/ etc. take it off in the morning/ put it on in my truck on the way home. cheers, Pat

Never been married. Till this october anyway. I've already told her I willnot be wearing it on daily bases. I'm always working on something either vehicle,motor cycle or buiulding a house(to try to apy for toys).

I figure better off getting her prepared to start with.

i have been married for 36 years & have never wore one. i don't even OWN one. or necklace, or cufflinks, or watches or any jewelry at all. i wear my dog tags on my boot laces over here & not around my neck & my c.a.c. in my pocket. now for a story. in 1972 at the welding school at the local j.c. (that was before there were 'vo techs') i was taking my 7018 overhead test & my welding instructor was watching me from behind with his gloved hands behind his back. a spark from my puddle went over his back & right down into his left glove & welded itself to his wedding ring. a large comotion was taking place behind me while i was patiently welding along & when i got done my instructor was nowhere to be found. my classmates told me he set into running in circles & jumping at the same time & ran out the door. found out later he ran out & dunked his hand in the ditch beside the driveway. it ALMOST ruined his finger, and he wore an impressive bandage for the rest of the semester. oh yeah, he made me test over again while watching from a SAFER distance.
