I took yesterday off from work so I could play with the new toys, man oh man they are nice. I can definitly tell it has been a few years since I have welded any substantial amount. Heck, I used to build firetrucks and TIG weld high pressure pipe. I was even bonified, qualified and certified by the guys who say you can weld certain things or not.
Any how back on topic, I got the small c-notch welded into the frame and I got the tank, valves, and compressor moounted. |

http://www.brotherstrucks.com/prodin...number=SMAE2CL I don't know if I like them though. I have seen the ones in the link below on a few trucks and I like the way they keep the original look of the lights only with a clear lens. http://www.brotherstrucks.com/prodin...er=SMADKIT%2DC |
Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step
Thank you for your service to our country. The truck is looking really good. I dig the stance with the air out. Did you encounter any clearance issues with the 10" wide rear wheel and 5.25 backspace? Thanks Mister E

Well, I got a bit more done yesterday. I got the airlines ran, and the rear shocks mounted. A piece of advice for all you newbies out there like myself, don't do any plasma cutting around freshly ran airlines... DOH! :dohh: Also, the fitting that was in the left front bag was leaking. I had to remove the upper plate since I just couldn't get it to stop leaking. Once I replaced the fitting it was all good.

I haven't been able to air it out all the way with the bed on yet. In the previous pictures the frames original bumpstops in the rear are sitting on the rearend. I have now removed those and notched the fram so it sits quite lower. I still don't think the truck will sit level when airred out. I have a strong feeling that I am going to run into problems with rear tires, clearance was a little tight. I will see what i can do to make them fit and if I can't then I will just have to figure something else out. |
Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step
I have the clear ones on the botton link they are ok but how do yours look at night lit up?

Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step
Frenchblue72, i guess it depends on what you are looking for. I don't really care for them because you can see the bulb at night. Thats why I like the non "Euro" ones. I will see if i can get a couple pic's of it when it gets dark out, let you be the judge.

Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step
VERY VERY SICK BUILD! i want the same thing on my fleetside...
but if i may say one thing welder to welder i now the wieght of the truck is being held in front of your Frame notch. It would take a whole lot of wieght in the back to bend it but just 2 cents would be to box the spot where you notched it on the inside and possibly run a 1/4-3/8 flat gusset on the outside just to make sure nothing goes wrong. done alot of gusseting on lowriders (hydraulics) and the brunt force tears these things apart. |

Any more pics since the notch? Trying to decide if it's worth it to do it since i'm not going to modify my steel bed floor.

Sorry fellas, no new updates. I have been working some insane hours and I haven't had a day off in quite some time. In fact I just got home from work and I have to work tomorrow. I haven't touched the notch yet although I did start wiring the valves and compressor up. I would suggest doing a notch I just would do one so you can get it an inch or two lower. The pic below shows how low it can go with factory bumps stops and no notch.
I hope that helps |
Re: Project Step Aside, 1971 SWB/Step

Yeah, the air dam is off, I just don't have any pictures of it yet...
I'm stuck back down in FL now dealing with a little wind and rain from Tropical storm Fay. Maybe one day I will get to work on it again. |
