Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Got the Dana 60 in. Well shocks and steering, brakes, driveline and it still has dually hubs but I just wanted it off jackstands

Plus the weight of the dana 60. Just stayed calm. Pry bar here, mini sledge there, a kick or two for good measure and I got everything lined up. Pretty happy right now. Trying not to think to far ahead for everything else that still needs to be done! |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
your making good progress keep it up

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
thats going to be a great rig once its done.

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Thanks guys I am looking forward to when it is done!
I am not looking forward to adding p/s to the flat 68 frame. If anyone has tips on the best way to dimple the frame I would appreciate it. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Been prepping the 87 1 ton to tear apart and pull the drivetrain and scrap the thing so I can get some more room.
Found some well used 315/75/16 (35) BFG Mud Terrains for 100 bucks so at least it will have the right size tires while its sitting around. http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs082....9_624428_n.jpg Going to have them mounted on some 16x8 steel rims off my old 95 gmc. Also found this steering wheel in the dirt amongst some of my stuff. I cleaned it up last night. Even matches my interior! http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs102...._6964813_n.jpg Really wanting to get some work done on it but its been raining a ton here! |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Well it is a 68 4x4 but it has the same problem as the 67 where the frame is not "stamped" for p/s I know you have to drill a few new holes and heat the frame up and pound it in to clear the p/s gearbox or add some sort of spacer. I don't think a spacer is a good idea with the frame cracks in these trucks. But My question is what of the orignal three holes do you go off of? I was able to get it in with the two bolts closest to the firewall top and bottom but it doesn't seem right. the bottom front bolt hangs below the frame and the angle doesn't seem right to the steering shaft. Took some pics to help you guys visualize it.
Some pics of successful installs would be appreciated! http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs434...._1878285_n.jpg http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._6981237_n.jpg http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs414....5_455261_n.jpg Also pulled the hydroboost off the 87. For the people that have went to hydroboost how did they go about it? I know its not a direct bolt in from an 73-87 into a 67-72. http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._3555064_n.jpg |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up

Doesn't deal with retrofitting to a 67-72 though so still looking for that info if anyone has done it. I know some of you guys have! |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
i wouldn't imagine it being that much harder...might have to do a little sheet metal fab...trial and error might be the way to go here. maybe i'll work on it when i get into my brake system. If i do, i'll post it up, but that won't be for a while.

I also picked up these 16.5x8.25 slot mags today off craigslist for 150. Not going to use them right away but I always liked this style rim and they are hard to find in 8 lug so I jumped on the deal. http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._1056729_n.jpg |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
nice find...I style need to find some 3/4 ton running gear for my 67...maybe i'll just go tons on my blazer and put the 3/4 tons on my 67 hrmmm...make sure to keep us posted on the hydroboost install...i'd like to see how you went about it

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
FYI, 16.5 tires are getting hard to find. And expensive.
|
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
not too bad...i'm runnign 16.5's on my 85 blazer and i have no problem getting the tires i use, but i'm runnin 40's so they're all gonna cost a little bit ;)
|
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
I will cost me $750 to $1K before tax to get tires for mine. That is a little steep right now.

Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
$750 or so is for the Mastercraft (?)
$900 or so is for the BGF A/T and ProComp A/T $1K or so is for the ProComp Mud All D rated. All 33/16.5/12.50. So for a moderate tire, it is a lot of coin for a guy out of work. I think I will search for used tires. |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Kalle,
Got a couple of questions for ya...hope you're up for the challenge. First i was gonna address the rearend of your burb. Looks like the shackle flip-n-switch went in nice, i see in your pictures tho that the tires don't appear to be centered in the wheel well http://photos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._1120972_n.jpg and i'm not sure if this has anything to do with the shackle angle, but is it just me or does it look too straight up and down http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._7583536_n.jpg Are the stock rear springs centered on your burb? Also what do your 52's measure from center pin to bolt hole on each side? cause it looks like your front is centered nicely from the picture i saw with the d60 under it and tires. Thanks, Jack |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
the shackle flip moves the tires forward about an inch I will address this when I swap the 14 bolt in the back. Kurt at DIY4X sold me a 1" block that has 3 different holes to move the axle back to line it up.
I'll measure my 52s I used in the front. They are stock springs off a 84ish gmc jimmy. |

thanks kalle..i appreciate it...here's a (really) crued drawing i whipped up in paint at work real quick of the dimensions i'm after for visual reference
i'm starting a thread about this for differant springs and such to do a spread sheet can you add the data to the thread in this link? http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=392551 Dimensions: (Green) - D1: (Blue) - D2: (Brown) - D3: (Purple) - D4: (Yellow) - D5: (Brown + Purple) - D6: Front of the truck is on the left and this is for the front and rear If you can get D1, D2, & D6 off the stock front i'd appreciate that too... I'll do a write up on it and store it and post it for tech purposes and tag it that way future 67 & 68 owners can have this information Thanks bro |
Re: 68 GMC 4x4 Suburban build up
Any updates on the suspension? I'm liking the shackle flip and b52s.

I just put the dana 60 dually front and a 14bolt dually rear under a 69 K/20 frame and built this truck.
The front end was a bolt in. Attachment 608739 |
