I hate even thinking about how many tools I've lost. I think part of it is letting everyone in the shop borrow stuff.

I lost a nice bag of about $1500 worth of snap-on tools working on a truck at my dad's place bout 5 years ago which randomly re-appear as my little brother forgets to hide the one with my initials engraved on them if he knows that I'm stopping by, now if the last 6 wrenches and the bag that are still MIA would show up I'd be set. worse thing about that loss is that the bag of tools was taken off the passenger side seat in my truck while I was in the house for 5 minutes cleaning up and there were only 3 people other than me there and no one saw a thing, and being in the country it ain't like someone randomly walked by and stole them outa the truck.

I was working in an attic many years ago, I to A/C work. We were changing out an air handler and evaporator coil. I had my helper loading up the tools as I was dealing with the customer on payment. On to the next job we went, and the next, it was a busy day. About a week later I was looking for my Dewalt cordless Sawsall. Couldn't find it, looked all over for it. About three months later I got a call that the heat wasn't working. i had made the rookie mistake of not turning on the gas valve when i installed the furnace. I get up in the attic and find my sawsall laying on top of the furnace. Score!

Over the years I have found tools of all kinds. Multivolt meters, refrigerant gauges, numerous hand tools of all kinds, cordless drills, you name it. But i have also donated my share as well. I buy at least 10 flashlights a year. if I realize I left a tool on a job, the first thing I do is consider it's value, then decide if it's worth my time to go get it.

I like my socket sets matching and in order. I lost a 3/8 drive 7/16 socket in June. Well just last week. After it's snowed and many many vehicles in and out of the shop I randomly found it laying in the gravel 10 feet out the shop door. I was happy:)

About three years ago I lost a 9/16 impact wiggle, a couple of months ago I was grading the driveway (over 1/2 mile long) and just happened to look down and there on the side of the ditch partially buried in the dirt was the socket, quiet rusty but there it was. Wonder if Craftsman will make it up?

I lose more razorblades/boxcutters/exacto's and rolls of electrical tape. Every other Harbour Freight trip involves getting another "stack" of tape rolls, and pack or two of razorblades.

I did manage to lose the entire set of door card hardware for my 66....after buying a new matching set (which worked out better than the originals)...I proceeded to find the originals in a mis-labeled plastic bag....in the bottom of a roadside emergency kit.

2 things -
A- always had a rattle in the back of the bed of my 57 - found out it was a large chisel that had been stuck in the stake pocket for years - got it out - still use it today.
B- Wandering thru junk yard amongst stacked cars ;found a pair of ''vice grips'' still clamped on an old car frame - worked them loose ;cleaned them up ; yup still use them today .woooohoooooo!

Bringing this back up because I did it again...

I dropped the truck around October last year. I still hadn't relocated the rear shocks yet because of those stupid rivets (fuel tank was in the way.)

The wood in the bed is pretty much trashed (almost 20 years old) so a light came on, just cut the boards, they need to be replaced anyway. I had the stupid rivets off in minutes.

Got out my camera to take pics... and saw a wrench that I had been missing for quite some time, just chillin' on the bolt I left it on. I haven't driven the truck a ton since last october, but I've put at least 1,500 miles on it

It is amazing the wrench is still there.

Several of my bottle jacks and jack stands were missing. I couldn't find them for weeks and cussed the sob who came into the shop and took them. Then I was at a friends shop and there they were. I forgot I loaned them to him months before.

Night before last I was opening boxes with a box cutter. Stepped away for a moment, came back and the box cutter is nowhere to be found. It will eventually show up in some weird place I left it.

For weeks my trouble light was missing from the shop. I couldn't find it anywhere. It took my wife like 30 seconds to find it for me....duh...

Me and a buddy were building a small block engine once, I had a BIG flat screwdriver that I used as a pry bar and such........we got the motor going and ran it for a while, but I never could find that screwdriver anywhere...I gave it up for lost?

Some months later we pulled the intake to change it out for a different one. The big screwdriver was laying right there in the lifter galley under the intake...!

Reminds me of a friend of mine - we always called him "Gator". Nicest guy ever but not the brightest bulb in the toolbox. As a result he was a lot of fun to tease and was the brunt of more than his share of mischief.

One day we came into the shop and he was visibly upset.

"Gator - what's wrong?" we asked.

"Oh - lost my favorite big screwdriver. It's not hanging on my box here where it always is."

"That's ok" we said. "We'll help you look for it. Did it have your name on it?"

"Naw - didn't have my name on it" he said.

So during the course of the day we were going about our business and - sure enough there's his screwdriver laying on one of the workbenches and - sure enough - there is his name proudly etched in the side of the blade.

So I ran back over to Gator to claim my prize: "Gator - I found this screwdriver that looks just like yours - but it can't be yours cause yours didn't have your name on it!"

;)

I could find my boot at school once. The ones I did find couldn't have been mine. Mine had snow all over them.
