Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Still on hunt for parts. Scored a brand new tank with new sending unit in it. $50 from someone on here. It was couple hours away, but luckily his brother in law drives a truck and I was able to meet him as he was passing through and get the tank. What a deal!

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Been couple months since Ive updated. Shes just been hibernating for the winter. But.....father in law said house is done and will be going on the market probably this week, so garage space will be going bye bye soon. Said he wants me to leave it till house sells though to show just how gigantic garage is!
Anyway I have got some more parts. Picked up a 750 Edelbrock on ebay for $100. Need to get it rebuilt here soon. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1329022609.jpg Also got a disc brake front end from Randy teeitup. So when I get her goin I will be doin a disc brake swap too! Fun fun! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1329022710.jpg |
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Almost forgot the best part!!!! Merry Christmas too me was 18' car trailer. Always borrowed and friends in past, but always wanted one of my own. Wife somehow talked me into buying her a van........I hate vans. So....I said I'm buying a car trailer then.
Sick of not having working lights or trailer brakes. Buddies trailer is neglected bad. So no more worry of that. All wiring is good, brand new tires, and serviced hubs. Bought a cheapy 9k harbor freight winch for it. Should be fine for just the trailer, and I mounted it on receiver plate thing so I can take it off and it wont be exposed to elements. Ran 2 gauge wire down frame of my truck also so I just plug it in at back of truck. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1329022631.jpg POS Chrysler van can be seen is this pic..... :-( http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1329022707.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1329022704.jpg |

All my stuff is in toolbox of my truck except winch. Its a heavy sucker and takes up a ton of room.

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
nice build and nice trailer. I'm always borrowing one myself.

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Should finally start working on it here in a few weeks. Pretty sure inlaws house is sold so garage spot will be going bye bye. Should start updating this soon.

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Alright, time to get to work! Got truck back home Friday. Plan is to have her running, driving, inspected, tagged and insured by May 12th. Big cruise here downtown where they close off streets and such.
Started messing with stuff this afternoon. Pulled the carb off to sell. Pulled all the mess tail light harness out and the lights out. Will all have to be redone. Checked out all the hacked up wiring under the hood. Made sure it was all "testable" and threw in brand new battery. Dug around for keys, thought I had lost em...... She cranks over!! I knew motor wasn't locked up for sure, but she cranks over just fine so thats a relief. Dummy me sprayed nasty old gas everywhere when I did it though since carb is off. Guess I know fuel pump works good...... Im off early Tuesday and all day Wednesday so will be working away. Will post updates with pics! Plan is to hopefully start her up on Wednesday nite, as long as summit gets my parts here on time. I will have a video of that for ya guys!! |

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Ill be there one way or another!
Didnt have much time tonite. Did flush radiator, motor and heater core out. Pretty nasty. I usually pull plugs out of block too, but one was directly behind dipstick. Other one was stupid tight so I said forget it. Best part was I loosened upper radiator hose to pull off thermostat housing. Figured hose was stuck on there pretty good like they always are. I was soooo wrong...... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1333509781.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1333509791.jpg I couldnt even come up with words I was so shocked. Luckily system was only half full of coolant and thermostat kept all the junk from gettting in motor. |
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Got alot done today. And she lives!!
First off switched out tank. Old tank came out easy. New tank went it terrible! Didnt fit worth a ****. I was cussing alot. Bought a new filler neck grommet at LMC the other day. It was kind of a pain too. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/055.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/056.jpg OLD http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/057.jpg New http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/058.jpg Fancy cap too. Fuel gage is not working right. Put in about 5 gallons and its showing full. Have to look into that. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/059.jpg |
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Moved to the motor next. Pulled off points dizzy and coil, old plugs and wires.
Plugs all looked good. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/061.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/062.jpg HEI and new wires a plugs. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/063.jpg Adapter and then rebuilt 750. Everything went well. Throttle linkage was easy. Biggest issue is TH400 kick down switch is not gonna work. Going to have to fab a bracket or something. Made a post to what other people have done. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/064.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/066.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...Velvet/067.jpg |

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Got her fired up. Took a good vid. Will get it uploaded. Runs good. Great oil pressure but temp gauge isn't working. Coolant system was nasty so I need to get that fixed before I start driving it in case its running hot I know. Fuel pump looked fairly new, but it might have taken a dump, fuel filter was nice a full at the start but the more I ran her, the less was in it, and is was almost totally empty when I was done.
Put it in gear and it would move. Starting cussing, but checked the fluid and it wasn't even on the stick. Added about 3 quarts and she moves fine now!! Brakes are non existent so no road test yet. Disc brake swap up front and total rebuild of rears are next week hopefully. |
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Vids up. Im not gonna lie, it wasnt as easy as it appears in vid. Started camera up and starting cranking her over. It was belching and backfiring out of carb and didnt want to run. Kept playing with timing and ended up thinking she was 180 out. So I shut off camera and checked and it wasnt. So then I restarted camera and thats where it picks up.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OvVp...ature=youtu.be Adjusted choke some tonite. She fired up in just a second of two of cranking. Im pretty impressed. Also figured out that reason temp gauge doesnt work it because its not hooked up. Loose wire that I found at back of motor was wire for temp gauge and some how had been cut. Hooked it up and it works now! |
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Great work! Looks just like my dads 67 Cst 20, right down to the front mount spare! Good luck with it. Bring it to kc this fall!

Congrats on getting it running. That big block sounds great. Makes me miss driving my 70. You should have this truck back on the road in no time. Keep on hammering.

Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Last nite I got rear drums off so they could be turned with rotors. Was expecting it to be a total pain. Impact driver saved my butt, they never would have come off otherwise. Theres two screws that hold drums to hubs. After screws were out, couple wacks with sledge and they popped right off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1334113500.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1334113492.jpg Drums look good, will turn good. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1334113408.jpg Been awhile since they have been touched. A long while. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1334113496.jpg |
Re: 68 C20--->Red Velvet
Tonite I drained diff and pulled axles. Would be surprised if 1/2 a quart came out. It looked like tar and really chunky. Hopefully diff isnt trashed. Hubs were filthy too. Lock nuts had been installed with a chisel. Cleaned them up with file and will reinstall them correctly with socket.
Plan to bust butt tomorrow and get brakes fixed up. Heres pile of parts for brakes. About $400 worth of stuff. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...1334113393.jpg |
