My wife is a bad influence on me. :lol:

I was looking at the new Classic Trucks mag on sunday and it's full of 67-72 C10's. Even a killer Blazer. But there's a 70 shortstep in there that I kept looking at, and I just kept thinking what I really wanted was a shortbed. So I walked over into the kitchen and told her the magazine is gonna get me in trouble, there are too many great trucks in there and it gives me too many ideas!! I mentioned the one short step that made me want the shortbed... and she asked me If I still wanted a short bed. Of course I said yes! Then she says, then get one!! :metal:

So I went onto CL and first post is a shortbed frame. Guy wanted $250. It's straight and just needs to be cleaned up and some paint slapped on. So I picked it up today.

So I guess I should change my signature and my Build thread title now to SWB! :metal::lol:

Been working on the frame. I sanded / wire wheeled all the rust, dirt, and grime off it, now it is getting a coat of POR-15. I have the week off so I'm cleaning and painting as much as possible. I have the frame just about done, and the trailing arms so far. Working on the front crossmember next... it's a serious mess, gonna take a few hours to clean that one! Here's a few pics.

Yesterday's update... I cleaned up the front crossmember only to find a crack! I dragged it down to a friend of mine's shop and he welded it up really fast. I cleaned the shock brackets and the u-bolts also. Today I'll be trying to get the control arms and trans crossmember done, and anything else I can squeeze in.

Finished for today. Wish I could do this every day, I actually feel like I'm accomplishing something... unlike when I'm at work! :lol:

So I cleaned the control arms and engine stands today, and finished the POR-15 on the frame. Got the first coat of POR-15 on the control arms, second coat tomorrow and done. It's nice to make progress.

Glad I cleaned this stuff, it had some really rough spots, and running it as is would eventually be a problem. Lots of rusty areas. Here's a couple pics of the control arms, and some better pics of the engine on the stand.

HA! Gonna be a while before I get to the engine... might be this year, maybe... think the truck needs to be a roller first!

Whew!!! I finished what I planned. Wow. Never seen that coming. No way. Never happens! But I actually ran ahead of what I wanted to get done, so I did some extra stuff! :metal:

Today I got the control arms covered in POR-15, painted a bunch of other misc parts, got the frame back into the garage and under the cab, dropped the cab on the frame, and put some of the rear suspension together to get it out of the way. My garage is packed again, but most of the stuff is clean now! OK, except for the engine, Rob! :lol:

So here's some pics. Playing the Fair tomorrow, wish I could take every week off and do stuff like this, it's a lot more fun that going to work! :lol::metal:

I used POR-15 on the frame, control arms, and front crossmember. Had just enough for those. The rest I used spray paint. The POR-15 isn't super pretty since it was brushed on, but still looks ok. I'm not going to worry about that stuff rusting.

Over the next month or so I'll be putting stuff together, so the garage will get less cluttered.... I hope! :lol:

It is all under the truck anyway so I wouldn't worry too much about prettiness! Did you see what I'm doing to the core support you brought down? Gotta check it out!

HA! Yea that might be a while for you though... :lol:

I"m going to use mine as is for now, I don't have the budget to replace it AND afford Power Tour next year... It'll look rough but it will kick ass underneath, that's the goal for now. After PT then I'll rip it apart and make it purty ;)

Finally! Rear suspension together and ready to go. Now I have to get my brake lines installed and fill the axle with fluid. Have a nice new POSI tag to go on the drain plug too. Moving to the front suspension for now! Should have most of that together next week, then I just have to wait until I have the money for my spindles and disc kit. Progress!!!

Still shooting for PT2014, but hey you never know, might take longer.... not gonna rush it though. Lots to do while I wait for more money for the project.

Great build. I know what you mean about working on truck instead of working. Need to work to pay for the fun-work though....

Any issues with the POR-15 not wanting to stick to the frame? I had some issues using the starter kit on my cab and inner fenders. It does not like smooth surfaces....

I didn't have any problems with it. I used metal prep right before I put my first coat, maybe that helped. it's not the prettiest finish when it cures but if I was going for pretty and perfect I would have had it sandblasted and powder coated. I put the POR15 on the frame, control arms, and front crossmember and even during assembly it didn't really scuff up.

So I finally dragged out my steering box to clean it up and install it, when I find that it's damaged. It came off the truck like this, it's been sitting under the truck for months. Looks like the guy must have hit something like a parking block or a curb really hard, because it took the end of the steering box off! The old frame had the core support mount bent up on that side, so I see how this happened. Got a replacement lined up so I'll use this to steer it until then when it's a roller, no way am I gonna try to drive with it!

Almost done with the front suspension besides the spindles now, getting really close to putting it on tires. :metal:

Well, despite the broken steering box, the front suspension is together, except for the spindles and sway bar. Going to drill out the rivets this weekend and bolt up the bar, so all I'll be waiting on is the spindles, and I have to wait until October for that. Forward progress though, despite setbacks! :metal:

Great job! Similar to my 67 402 project. Mines pretty much dead in the water so keep working on yours and posting pics so I can look at them
