Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Some progress. I pulled the engine and trans today with one of my new toys I mean tools I got for Xmas. I was going to pull them together have never done it before, but with the bell housing cross member still there I didn't think the trans would clear it with the engine on. So I pulled them separate.
The engine stand I'm using belonged to my Grandpa. He used to build them and sell them back in the early 70's at his shop. I have a cool photo of when he was making them. It has sat outside for many years at my dads place but I plan to blast it and repaint it. Another PO folly it looks like there is no oil pan gasket just RTV. Unless it was leaking all over and RTV was after it was assembled. http://images51.fotki.com/v282/photo...age0018-vi.jpg http://images9.fotki.com/v120/photos...SCN7671-vi.jpg http://images53.fotki.com/v1504/phot...SCN7741-vi.jpg http://images18.fotki.com/v270/photo...SCN7744-vi.jpg http://images114.fotki.com/v74/photo...SCN7745-vi.jpg http://images114.fotki.com/v74/photo...SCN7754-vi.jpg http://images18.fotki.com/v329/photo...SCN7756-vi.jpg http://images107.fotki.com/v71/photo...SCN7755-vi.jpg Thanks for looking. Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
really like that old engine stand... hmmmm, i need to make one. its cool yours has family history and part of the cool factor is the wear. i'm one of those guys that typically restores everything but some stuff is best left as is. that thing is...:metal:
you got a great shop and some other interesting projects. |

And yes my projects span different decades. The 79' Caprice is my first car and I have had it for 19 years. My parents bought it new. It has come along way from the 130hp 305 and 2.41 gears it came with from the factory. I plan to get it back roadworthy someday. LOL. The Camaro is my daily driver and the covered car is the 72' Cutlass. Quote:
I went out to the garage tonight after work as I was dying to crack open the 350 and see if the PO owner did things right. After I removed all the bolts from the oil pan I realized they didn't use a gasket just RTV! Also I think this pan is from the original 283 with the drain plug in the bottom. Much to my surprise there was windage tray installed and it is a 4 bolt main. Finally something done right. I pulled the front cap and the bearings look good as well. Not sure if the crank is forged or cast. http://images114.fotki.com/v74/photo...SCN7760-vi.jpg http://images18.fotki.com/v437/photo...SCN7762-vi.jpg http://images53.fotki.com/v1495/phot...SCN7763-vi.jpg This puzzled me it appears there is RTV between the oil pump and the rear main. Not sure why. I don't recall ever doing this on any of the engines I built. http://images9.fotki.com/v1542/photo...SCN7767-vi.jpg If you look real close you can see the 4 bolt mains. http://images116.fotki.com/v699/phot...SCN7768-vi.jpg Its starting to get bare. Can't wait to get the cab repaired and off the frame. http://images107.fotki.com/v159/phot...SCN7769-vi.jpg Bret |

350 looks to be in darn fair shape! :metal: I'm afraid to see what mine is gonna look like.

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Well after having my new Air compressor for a month I finally got to see what it could do today. Spent about 6 hours sandblasting. It didn't even skip a beat. I can sandblast till my body hurts. Which it does tonight.
I got quite a few parts done. Not much but some progress. Both cowl pieces, all the gauge cluster parts, 1 radiator cover, radiator bracket, and the hood latch. http://images42.fotki.com/v1452/phot...SCN7771-vi.jpg And a quick coat of primer. http://images114.fotki.com/v74/photo...SCN7773-vi.jpg http://images107.fotki.com/v780/phot...SCN7775-vi.jpg It was awesome weather today for sandblasting. Overcast and 64* Tomorrow's plan more sandblasting. Bret |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Not much done on the truck. Had to reset the garage as it was a mess with stuff laying everywhere. I had 6 rolls of insulation for the walls that has been in my way so I decided to finish the wiring on the back wall and hang all the insulation.
http://images16.fotki.com/v258/photo...8/photo-vi.jpg http://images108.fotki.com/v1629/pho...8/photo-vi.jpg I also got a new air regulator/filter from HF. I paid $28 for it with my ITC membership and 25% off coupon. So far it works great. I didn't hard line it yet as I would have to redo it so I hooked it up with an old hose for now. I love the regulator on this it works so smooth. http://images60.fotki.com/v370/photo.../photo1-vi.jpg http://images61.fotki.com/v666/photo.../photo2-vi.jpg http://images60.fotki.com/v370/photo.../photo2-vi.jpg Bret |

Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Well I have mostly been sandblasting and priming. The last 3 days I have spent replacing the oil pan gasket on my 02 Camaro. What fun that was. And after all of that work it is still leaking oil above the starter. So either the rear main is leaking or the OSPU.
http://images9.fotki.com/v1542/photo...SCN7789-vi.jpg http://images15.fotki.com/v1626/phot...SCN7793-vi.jpg My makeshift sandblasting booth http://images107.fotki.com/v70/photo...SCN7783-vi.jpg http://images107.fotki.com/v780/phot...SCN7784-vi.jpg Oil pan from Camaro http://images15.fotki.com/v1624/phot...SCN7836-vi.jpg Here you can see the K member is hanging down about 6" so I could get the pan on and off. This required unbolting a lot of things. I think the entire job took me about 16 hours. http://images16.fotki.com/v388/photo...SCN7841-vi.jpg Bret |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Your shop is looking good, I like your makeshift sandblasting booth. Do you just leave the one side open? I am going to make one and was wondering how well it worked. Thanks <W>

One good thing about the one side being open is you can sandblast bigger stuff such as a radiator support and bumpers. I generally blast for about 10-15 minutes before my pot runs out of media and it takes me about 20-30 minutes to pickup all the sand and sift and get the pot ready to go again. It works out because it gives my Air Compressor a chance to rest. Bret |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
I have an ATV Tent I plan on repurposing into a blast tent when I get it home and get settled.
I wish I had seen this sooner though, as a temp set up, this would be awesome !! :metal: |

I had kind of envisioned a "Dexter" room with painters plastic inside the tent with some ventilation to suck or blow out the dust. I have a vacuum cleaner set up on my blast cabinet that does this and it works great. |
Re: 64 C10 Stepside "Jaybird"
Good progress and tool collection Brett.
