Can't you swap in a sending unit from a 72 auto truck that has an extra port?

Pull the filler neck out. Brass or weld a 3/8 nipple in it. Make sure your fuel cap is a two way and release pressure. Thats the only thing that I would know to do short of leaving it vented under the truck. we are in the same boat with different setups..

I am going to make mine work I am just not sure how yet, I think my first attempt will be to T my original vent line to the command center vent and leave one side open under the hood. If I never smell gas guess what its going to stay like!!!!! If it does produce more vapors than the factory vent line under the truck I will back up and punt. My dilemma is if I run another line back to the tank and leave the original vent line and it does pressurize my tank it will push even worse vapors from the 25 gallon tank under the hood through the original vent line than the command center vent would alone.

Good point nitis in his case as long as he has a two way vented fuel cap. in my case i already have that line, its just on the passenger side of the tank. If I do put in a 2 port sending unit and plumb my vent back to it wouldnt it just push more vapors back under the hood through my original vapor vent? Dang it why didn't the make a two way vented cap for a 72. Thats all I need then I could just hook it to my original vent line

Well I'm not sure about everything but sit back and stew for second. Were all 72 caps the same? Only autos had dual ports. And did auto 4x4 have dual ports? Is there a simple break down of all the differences between fuel tanks between 67-72. I was only aware of the one sending unit.

72 gained the passenger side vent that ran to the charcoal canister and the filler neck extra tube. My 72 tank has a single inlet on the sender but its a manual. 72 is also when the cap size changed and the fuel cap got smaller and only vented in. No longer venting out to the atmosphere

I thought about that but the return line in the sender would be below the fuel level when the tank is full. I don't know if that would be ok or not. FITech sounded like they didn't approve of that.

I could drill my existing sender and put in a bulkhead fitting if that would work.

I just don't know if that is adequate or not.

Well damn I am striking out all over the place. Sounds like if you want it back to the tank you gotta pull the tank either way to weld a nipple in, make sure cap is vented both ways still!!! or run it under the truck which they advise against.

I don't want it under the truck, it could puke fuel and cause a fire. I wouldn't dare weld on a used tank without a nitrogen purge, and I don't have the setup for that.

Piss on it I am going to install mine as a closed loop and see what it does, as long as the command center doesnt build pressure mine will be perfect. Meaning run the command center vent to my original tank vent with the factory only vent in cap! I will keep yall posted lol. If you don't hear back from me the results were not in my favor

fitech said it has a check ball valve in it to prevent rollover flow of puke back when I spoke to them on the phone the other day.

They told me the concern with the vent was if the float ever hung up you could have flow out of the vent. So vent under the truck (or anywhere other than the tank) could spray fuel if something fails.

I went back and forth with them for quite a while on Facebook the other day on this stuff.

What I really need is a fitting I can add to the filler neck without causing sparks or heat.

I don't know.


When the tank is full, I have fuel up into the bottom of the file neck, maybe by 2". The return on the sender would then be 3-4" below the fuel level. Even with a tube turned up its still 2" below the fuel level.

I could put a check valve in the vent line to keep fuel from flowing back down the vent, but any venting would have to bubble through the fuel while the tank is full.

I just don't have enough faith that it would work to invest $1200 and have it fail.

Aaaaahhhhhh. They told me there was no way fuel could come out of it. Only vapors. But I see your point clearly👀

1390 to be exact. It will work.

I am going to locate mine on the drivers side radiator support. And use a drivers side inlet port on the throttle body.

Are you going in front of the engine with the line from the mechanical pump?

I am going in front of it right under the radiator. There is a low spot on the support that has factory holes I will use to fasten too.

Guys,
My buddy Diceman, built a surge tank that functions just like the command center. We mounted it behind the right headlight and battery. Here's a link to my build thread which starting in post #10 you'll get a pretty good idea on what we did. We probably would have use the FiTech Command center had it been available at the time. Anyway, the one Diceman built works great and we've now run it over 7000 miles with no issues. I will be using all FiTech on my Camaro.

I just spent 30 minutes staring at my tank wondering what to do with that damn vent line. I just don't see a way to add it to the filler neck at all.

I was looking at bulkhead fittings for fuel cells, but I think that will protrude too far into the neck and make filling a pain. And drilling the hole is kind of scary. I'd have to pull the tank, drain it, and let it air out for a while. Even then......those fumes hang around for a long time.

Pull it fill it with water and drill a hole on top. Look at a 72 tank for reference on the passenger side. I cut propane tanks every week. Fill it with water and you will be fine.

That worries me because then I have to get all the water back out or the truck will run like $hit.

Starting to seem like way more than I really want to bite off for a truck that runs just fine already.

Pour it out and sit it in the sun for a day. It will evaporate quick. Just pour it out the filler neck.
