I took a very fast look back through this thread and could not find where anyone had told you to get rid of that fixed-length rod that you made.
Make a new longer rod with one or two bends in it. This new rod with a bend(s) should be bent to approximate the length of your old fixed length rod. Don't know if you finally got this figured out but if not, I just stumbled across a website that has a lot of quadrajet parts. Even the choke rod you are looking for. Here is the link: http://www.carburetion.com/
